Joan Baez is a more technically skilled singer with better pitch control, power, and vibrato, but Richard Manuel still sang this number way better, because his phrasing, timing and melancholy touch gave it way more soul

@ricky6565 Well, it's coming out in a month's time baby! So you won't have to worry no more! Just buy the anthology box set. It's going to be exquisite!
As I-ve already written on this site, Joan Baez is and will remain forever one of the witnesses of our times. Her voice for me doesn't sound as perfect as some people wrote here and that's why I prefer her voice than Collin's for instance. She hasn't been formated, and most of all on this clip, we can see how unconfortable the blond lady compelled to listen to her feels. She's got a strange smile mixted with admiration and condescendance. Yeah for sure she's the only one capable to do so!
For the most part, I like a healthy vibratto, but I know what you mean. I personally think the only time it's too much is on a couple of her earliest 100% soprano recordings, when she was still trying to figure out what to do with her voice. It got better in the late 60s (as shown in this clip) through the 70s.
I think the vibratto is what makes Joan's vocals so memorable. I actually think the only flaw with Baez -- and I say this being a huge fan of hers for decades -- is occasionally some of the Dylan songs and other rock and roll things she's chosen to cover, required harshness and roughness and Joan's voice is so perfect and pristine and gorgeous that something gets lost when in the translation. (On the other hand, with songs like "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and the Allmans' "Blue Sky", she...
I agree, she has a great voice but sometimes too perfect for some songs. I think this rendition is just beautiful, I don't think it's nececessary to compare it with Richard's or Dylan's, all are unique and worthy in their own right. A great song, I enjoy all three's versions.
We were all so young and so was she. I love the pure clear vision of our youth.
Her voice is just a part of what made her Joan Beaz. It was also the pure clear vision of what could be...and never was. I am sorry for those who grew up with Dubious as their mode and vision.
god love you Joan, Bobby Dillon and all the icons of the wild and hopeful 1960s.
Yeah. Very nice version. I have always struggled with Joan - love everything she is about, and I can't deny the pure gift of her voice, but it is often hard to listen to - a little too much, maybe. Here, she brings that guy to tears, and she gave me goosebumps.
Who would have thought Joanie would have been on "Playboy After Dark"? Great version - interesting to see the bimbos at the mansion trying to get down and appear that they really are trying to think about what the song is saying.
Basically spectac---Not too shabby---best version I've heard---the polite applause is a tad embarrassing but then the 60s weren't really happenin yet---everyone looks like they're neighbors of Ward and June Cleaver--except the black couple of course.
I never have been a fan of joan baez. She was too 'soft' for me. But then this. I admit: this is great, wonderfull singing of a great and difficult song (richard manuel/dylan)
He let her preach her peace politics so she went on his show. She was almost never on primetime TV-toooo controversial. Joan has one of the most powerful and "softest" voices ever. She is the ONLY concert artist I've seen perform without a mike(more than once) in concert!

A little class/reality awareness........
That is such a heavy statement I doubt any of the Playboy Club understood the concept of " So alone, life is brief ".
More approprate in 1968 to sing that song to young solders......
