Those quills are NOT designed for self defense. They ALLOW the animal to defend themselves. Be careful with the use of certain words. IF you use Design, someone will put the word "intelligent" before it.
I never got to visit the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa while I was living there but this video was pretty educational and I learned a bit from it, even though I knew a long time ago that porcupines can't shoot their quills.
Jeff, I had heard that their quills were actually quite anticeptic and did not cause festering on their own, but rather the festering was caused by paws etc, trying to get them out.
We have two Porcupines at Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre in Cumbria. There is a video of them on our account. They are amazing creatures. I just love to watch them. I have had quite a few visitors come up to me asking if they can fire their quills.
I love how they eat. Ours just love bananas, they peel the skin off then eat the soft insides first, then they will eat the skins later. They also love potatoes.
No, they cannot shoot their quills. They can however release them. So if you get stuck with a quill, they can flex a muscle, release the quill and run away, Thanks foe watching.
@JefftheZooGuy Porcupine in my country Burma can shoot their quills. Believe it or not. It shoots as in releasing the spines while making a quick body shake. My friend, while hunting for deer, captured a porcupine by his head while it run into him in the bushes. He had no time to use his gun. Out of his fear, he kept holding it by the head to not get shot by the spines. It shook its body to fly off the mature spines. After that he cut the throat with knife and killed it.
No. The porcupine that most people think about in South America is the Prehensile Tailed Porcupine. They are much smaller than this one, and have a long, prehensile tail. They spend the majority of their lives in the trees, whereas the African Porcupine spends its life on the ground.
They are closer to horses than they are rodents. They share the same diet and digestion as horses do. Rabbits are not rodents though. They belong to a group of animals called lagomorphs. It includes rabbits, hares and a small animal called a pika. The difference between them and rodents are their teeth, 4 on top for rabbits, 2 for rodents, lagomorphs are mostly herbivorous, where as rodents will eat meat, and the two have diffences in their sexual organs,(I won't go into detail)Hope this helps!
when you get stuck with a quil does the quil bend into a hook when it cuts through the flesh of the victim?
