When you name individuals like Aryaan Hirshi Ali in a list of people positively contributing to society, I find it hard to take your list seriously at all. She's very influential indeed, but she's also a pawn of the corporate elite who uses lies and distortions regarding the Islamic world to help make Samuel Huntington's "Clash of Civilisation" a reality. I think there is a miss understanding here. Atheism has no value and no contribution by itself to society. There are no values and believes associated with atheism. But when individuals are free from the slavery of religion, free to be themselves, they are also free to do really great things instead of praying and wasting their time with an imaginary god.
Name one moral thing that a nonbeliever can't do that a christian can. Now, on the other hand I can quickly name many non-moral things christians have done in the name of their god!

nice questions my friend. actually i am in awe at the universe and i enjoy listening to theories about black holes and higher dimensions. what does it all mean in a moral context? i am not sure. could it explain why God hasn't "intervened"? maybe he exists in a higher dimension and is respecting the free will he gave us. I am a Christian and i also ask similar questions, why is good, good? what makes a bad thing bad? I don't know, but i refuse to assume that lack of a reason for these questions mean there is no good or bad. i just keep searching. dont think we can ever wrap our heads around it though so i just rely on God's guidance and i have no problem abiding by His rules. just sharing my opinion.
I think that if we understand what's the meaning of "it is good for me", "it is bad for me", "it is good for them" and "it is bad for them", then we may understand what's the meaning of good and bad in the moral context (understanding does not mean there's a reason, though). If a God exists and He's good, than he's good for His creation. If you're morally good, you're good for others.

I wasn't playing any games. I took time in the past days to seek information regardg animal conscience. I can't find anything, yet believe that if you study comparative psychology, you'll undoubtedly believe that animals have a sense of conscience.

Studiying an introductory psychology course in college vs taking an upper-level course in comparative psychology, in which one spends hours in observation of a particular animal, is quite different. humans adapt their moral standings due soley to environment. Someone in the middle east has different principles and values than someone here. It's not due to religion. For example, I am an atheist but i still have morals and principles that I believe in. I don't steal or rape or do anything that would hurt others really. Zach dude that I can answer. I thought that way when I was a child. It made perfect sense to me then. As you grow and see the complexities of life you realize this cannot just be an accident. Your hands and mind where made to work this earth. The male -female relationship for propigation is sooo natural. Just go in the woods sometime and watch nature. That is a true and interesting fact. Religions do, in fact, stabilize countries. That is the curious thing about humans when we believe theres something to fight for, to believe in we seem to do better. But also i want to ask if these countries became this way because of atheism, or instead by communism, war or poverty. nice questions my friend. actually i am in awe at the universe and i enjoy listening to theories about black holes and higher dimensions. what does it all mean in a moral context? i am not sure. could it explain why God hasn't "intervened"? maybe he exists in a higher dimension and is respecting the free will he gave us. I do believe in Jesus, and i also believe there are answers to questions that are simply beyond us. a matter of perspective perhaps.

I am a Christian and i also ask similar questions, why is good, good? what makes a bad thing bad? I don't know, but i refuse to assume that lack of a reason for these questions mean there is no good or bad. i just keep searching. dont think we can ever wrap our heads around it though so i just rely on God's guidance and i have no problem abiding by His rules. just sharing my opinion.

I think that if we understand what's the meaning of "it is good for me", "it is bad for me", "it is good for them" and "it is bad for them", then we may understand what's the meaning of good and bad in the moral context (understanding does not mean there's a reason, though). If a God exists and He's good, than he's good for His creation. If you're morally good, you're good for others.

1st - I enumerate some of the things atheists have done to contribute to humanity.
2nd - I'm answering to the claim that Hitler was an atheist.

1) I studied psychology at college and what I learnt is there are JUST theories, despite expensive drawn out research which in some case can last 20 years. Dawkins interview,ed I believe, someone on his BBC thing but saw no evidence for what he said.

humans adapt their moral standings due soley to environment. Someone in the middle east has different principles and values than someone here. It's not due to religion. For example, I am an atheist but i still have morals and principles that I believe in. I don't steal or rape or do anything that would hurt others really. That's proof enough that religion doesn't shape morals, it's environment. I mean it CAN, but that's only if you're exposed to it as a necessity through family.

Countries like Vietnam, Estonia, China, Albania, and Russia have a majority of atheists and they are doing terrible
While religious countries like Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong are doing great, they rank very highly according to the HDI, also most of them are Christian
Also if you look at Nationmaster you'll see Islamic countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia have very low crime rates, they have really low murder rates while Estonia has a really high one

That is a true and interesting fact. Religions do, in fact, stabilize countries. That is the curious thing about humans when we believe theres something to fight for, to believe in we seem to do better. But also i want to ask if these countries became this way because of atheism, or instead by communism, war or poverty. Maybe its not do to the religions that these countries have, or dont have for that matter but the leaders and governments they have.

Estonia is a developed country according to the HDI, it makes it to the top 50 afterall. And yet they have a very high murder rate, this isn't because it's poor, war, or poverty. You can't just dismiss this, it's one ofg the most atheistic countries in the world
Also surveys indicate that those who profess no religion are four times more likely to be incarcerated than their Christian counterparts

As I clearly showed, over half of the UK is Christian. Church attendance in the UK is low, nonetheless; it's significantly higher than Russia, China and Estonia.
Brazil has a lower murder rate, Colombia is having of the civil war.

Estonia is a fluctuation. In general, Higher rates of belief in or worship of a creator positively correlate with high rates of homocide, juvenile mortality, STD infection rates, and teen pregnancy.
Just to note, low homocide rates do not make an idea true or false. Even if atheism did cause crime, it would not make a god exist.

And I would love to see where you concluded that from when religion has specific commandments not to do these things
And actually it does prove that we have contact with the divine, if you knew a person that never sinned then you would be fored to conclude that he has a halo above his head, it's unnatural

I'm a member of my former lutheran church myself, doesn't make me a lutheran. Only about 1 in 10 Swedes says that religion is important to them.
Well, as far a christianity, I concluded it from... hmm, well let's start with the fact that the Christian God is himself a genocidal, megalomaniacal, jealous, petty psychopath. The Bible endorses slavery, condones murder in some cases, permits human sacrifice, and is scientifically inaccurate. And let's not go into the crusades and inquisition for now

By the way, there is no such thing as a sin. Sin is a construct of the church to keep their guilt-ridden followers coming back and giving them money because the only way they can evade eternal torture is by coming back and saying they're sorry. And no matter WHAT they did, no matter how grave the crime, all they have to do is say sorry and they will be okay.
Honestly I find it pathetic that people actually fall for it.

You're basically saying that Christians tend to be worse than atheists because their god is cruel while you ignore other non-Christian religions that are doing great, like Hong Kong

But I promise you, half the UK is not christian my friend. 2% go to church here. The rest go to marriages, funerals etc but only as part of the cultural ritual. We have no supernatural beliefs.

You always hear theists saying Hitler and Stalin were atheists... but Hitler was a Roman Catholic and Stalin tried to replace religion with HIMSELF, creating a new religion and making himself the god of it. Kim Jong Ill is doing the same thing now in Korea.
Stalin is to Soviet Russia as Jesus is to Christianity.
Believe in a god if you want, but organized religion (or pseudo-religion, in Stalin's case) is the greatest evil this world has ever known.

Biological immortality is absolutely possible since most tissues ('flesh and bones') are constantly rebuilding themselves anyway.
The next step would be to upload your neurological structure (aka consciousness) to an external device. Now, that is stil crazy science fiction today, but so was the internet in 1980.

Every generation has its naysayers, claiming that the peak of scientific achievement has been reached. If we had listened to them, we'd still be riding carriages and pray to the gods and ghost to cure the sick.
What is this 'flesh and bones' you're talking about? And why do you think that there is no medical way to keep it working indefinitely?

You're misunderstanding me. Of course there can be no real immortality. I'm talking about a life that doesn't end because of old age or ordinary diseases.
It would be infinite only as long as you kept out of harms way.
At least until there really is a way to make backup-copies of our personalities - which probably won't be possible within the next 300 years. But who knows? We've already got the 'hardware'.

I agree. But today many christians don't have their morals from the christian Bible or christian leaders (at least here, in Portugal). I made a test with portuguese christians and atheists - would they lie to save someone? -, and they all gave the same answer. Except an evangelical creationist, of course...

Ok, I love this video so much. But you should have used a different song for the second part. Rammstein is liberal, they are not Nazis and they are not religious. Links 2 3 4 was written to make it clear to the fans that they were NOT right wing Nazi, they are Left (links) liberal, and in favor of peace, they just like hard music. Really, I can understand if you didn`t know this because the lyrics are in German, but maybe you should go look up the English lyrics and see for yourself?

Yes, someone told me something like that, but I didn't chose the video because I thought they were nazis. The marching and the rythm fitted the images I wanted to show. I didn't think about that, but I was answering to those who say Hitler was an atheist, and Rammstein used the music to answer to those who say they are nazis. By the way, Till Lindemann is an atheist ( rammstein-europe : Till Lindemann Biography).
