When I visited South Africa in 1994, the suburban trains were always long: Usually 2-3 4 car EMUs to make an 8-12 car train. The EMUs always reminded me of the 1500v dc EMUs in the UK such as the 506s Manchester-Hadfield (Woodhead Route)and those on the London-Shenfield-Chelmsford and Southend routes.

I never visited South Africa during the heady steam days. Something I have always regretted. :(
