I think that letting the car designer actually experience it for themselves is a good idea. Aches and pains come on gradually and elderly people may just accept that when they get into a car it hurts their back etc. This allows the designers to feel directly what they feel (kind of) and so can come up with new designs that elderly people may not have even thought of.

They get a first hand feel at what the old drivers have to deal with. Words only go so far when compared to actual experience.

In japan, a large majority of the population is elderly. I'm sure every method they use is to improve their sales, but they're also aiming to improve the lifestyles of people at an older age.
