Hey guys i just wanted to let you know this is my great grest grandmother i am very serious about saying this i just wanted to comment on one of the videos about her
I do adore MacDonald, but you Americans are really quite stupid. Do you really think that a grandson of Jeanette Mc would publish his comment right here?
Jeanette was one of the few ladies at M-G-M Studios who could hold her own with Louis B. Mayer, who called her the "iron butterfly." She new exactly what she wanted in every film and was more than willing to tough it out to get her way.
What's surprising is how few people--especially older people--know this song in San Francisco. I've been in several situations where a band has done "I left my heart" and "Dock of the Bay" but when I ask for "San Francisco" and even explain it, the band can't play it.
She had it all, voice, beauty, figure and, Nelson Eddy to sing with. She and Clark had a chemistry together to be sure. Loved all her movies. You can see them on Turner Classic Movies. There will not be another one like Jeanette.
The best rendtion is the first one on the movie, its less affected and quite startling. I love it and love her singing. This will always remain a great movie. Its immortal.
Her gowns were so beautiful throughout their movies. I wonder what happened to them? I hope they are being taken care of. :) Does anyone know if she had a main designer? :)
I love the spot in this movie (at :40) when Blackie Norton is just so amazed at how talented Mary (Jeanette MacDonald) is he exhales a whoo.In that moment he was so focused on her performance that nothing else existed. Then the audience breaks him out of his trance while clapping in appreciation of her performance. Just another great moment in this wonderful movie.
When the 49ers score they play this song. The Giants played this at Candlestick now ATT&T with Tony Bennett "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" Officially the Board of Supervisors made one City Song the other City Ballad
She loved making this film with Gable and Tracy (film company doesn't get finer than that) and the privilege of uttering one of the most famous lines in movie history, "What was that?"
Jeanette MacDonald was a great talent. This was here greatest moment on film. Too bad she isn't remembered as well as some of the other great stars of her day.
I read somewhere that Jeanette's voice was unsuitable for any music. Too casual for high opera (Just shut the hell up, there's already enough videos here to disprove that). And too operatic for light music. This is the video that disproves THAT.
In 1981,a couple years after I moved to L.A., a friend asked if I would like to meet a friend of hers. She asked because she knew I was interested in film musicals. She took me to a Beverly Hill's home that had once belonged to Carmen Miranda. There I met an elderly, articulate gentleman whom she called Broni... Bronislaw Kaper. Kaper co-wrote the music for the song San Francisco. He also earned an Oscar, which he allowed me to hold, for the musical Lili. I will never forget that night.
@gvie56 How lucky you are. What a privilage to meet that man. I envy you. I'd have enjoyed speaking with him too. :) Thanks for sharing this story with us Give. :) I like touching history. I've gotten to touch the Rosetta Stone at the British Museum and a piece of the Titanic which was in Pheonix on a traveling exhibit of the Titanic. It makes you feel more, somehow, about history. "Up close and personal" would be a good phrase. :)
Just came back from San Francisco...love the city and the song! I wasn't overly aware of the movie but the clips on YT demonstrate it was pretty damn good!!
Unknowing to many fans Jeanette made a private 78rpm recording of San Francisco backed with Would You? for RCA in 1936 complete with a full chorus, and sounding even better than the soundtrack. It is now in the hands of devoted Jeanette collector.
I love that song and that city. San Francisco should embrace this song and use it as much as possible. The great Jeanette MacDonald was never better than when she made this move and sang this marvelous song.
Mr Gable didn't want to do this movie because his pal Nelson Eddy told him Jeanette treated him pretty badly. Later on Clark appologized to Jeanette for being out of line..Super Movie!
(Jolson style) San Francisco, open your Golden Gate You let no stranger wait - who's been knockin - who's been knockin' Outside of your door. San Francisco, here comes your wanderin' one And I'm sayin' - and I'm sayin' That I'm gonna wander no more. Other places - other places only make me love you best, Tell me - tell me! You're the heart of the Golden West - the Golden West! San Francisco, welcome me home again I'm coming home to go roamin' no more!
I just watched San Fran.,for about the 4th time I love her singing of the song, kararules your nuts, and yeah I did seeJolson in her mannerism, but I goose bumps when she sings, plus she was a real doll, red curly hair, slim doesn't get any better than that
No one like her before or since. What a voice! What a figure! What a personality! What projection! She was one of the few stars on the MGM lot Louis B. Mayer didn't tangle with. She was known as "The Iron Butterfly." She knew what was best for her on screen and she got her way.
Recent prophecies are indicating San Francisco will be entirely destroyed by a massive California quake next year in 2010. The Golden Gate Bridge will collapse and never be rebuilt. The city will be abandon because the infrastructural damage will be so colassal and far too astronomical in costs to repair. Citizens that survive will be forced to migrate inland to San Joaquin County and other areas north and south.
Wow! This is a professional grade video! Whoever produced it deserves a Grammy or an Oscar. This is a wonderful, unique film about not only the American Spirit, but also the Spirit of our City! Bravo!
Do you have this DVD ? I've seen this great movie a number of times on Turner Classic Movies. It was originally in black and white. It looks beautiful in color too. Where can I get a copy of the color version ?
I can't imagine any other singer on Earth who could sing this powerful, emotional song any better than Janette MacDonald. What a teriffic film. What a great cast. What outstanding production and directing!
I thanked God when I escaped LA and moved to San Francisco in 1984. This movie, and Jeanette MacDonald's powerhouse performance remind me what a great movie, and what a great city they are. Whenever I see this spot on, four star film, I rejoice. The City has spirit, and that spirit rebuilt the Paris of the United States after one of the worst disasters of all time. We should all cheer, and celebrate its rebirth. And remember, We built this city on Rock and Roll.
As always, such a delight! "It only takes a corner of.." This is amazing. Ms. M really puts this piece into another realm. Thanks for this beautiful bit of nostalgia; we want MORE!
ted turner went wild in the 80s when he first acquired the mgm vaults...he colorized many of the b/w classics, much to the disdain of many. thankfully, that practice is over and done with!
It's too bad that we don't hear this often when the MLB Giants win. I would wish they could replace "I Left My Heart in SF" for this on some games as both songs are official songs of San Francisco. Both are great songs, no? :)

San Francisco, open your golden gate

San Francisco, welcome me home again,
