the thing that makes is hard for me to appreciate the timpani concerto is the piece still mostly uses the orchestra for the melodic passages with the timpani as a highlight. maybe the closest thing to that you would see in another instrument is a piano concerto. I guess I expected the timpani to be even more featured than they are, which may or may not be possible.
@paneuphony , on the other hand, since the timbre of the timpani is so wildly different than that of of the rest of the orchestra, it is able stand out in a way that is different that most other solo instruments. The orchestra is supplying a good deal of the melodic material, while the timpanists are driving the rhythmic and dynamic contour of the ensemble to a greater extent than is usual (or even possible) for other solo instruments.
@Scribbler29 hehehe... ah, trademarks. I know what you mean. I feel the same way about Vivaldi's music. Most composers wrote 4000 things once... they write this, then they write that, then they write something else. Vivaldi wrote one thing 4000 times... :)
Great post, thank you. As someone who has studied composition, I have some very good and some rather bad things to say about Mr. Glass, but this is a real masterpiece - a really glorious piece of music, and furthermore one characteristically "American" in a way which has not been seen (heard) in decades. Music for our great President Obama, the new Lincoln.
Philip Glass was always a groundbreaker... I think the idea of tympani as solo instruments is still a little difficult for most classical music fans to warm up to, but why not a tympani concerto? It is by nature different than a viola concerto, but so, then, is a bassoon concerto or a piano concerto, or stuff like Bartok's concerto for orchestra. There should be room under our tent for everyone...
Love this... John is my favourite timpanist and I grew up inspired by his Proms appearances; full of energy and drive. Such commitment to every note. Belshazzar's in 1994 is brilliant, anyone know of that performance?
Since I first listened Glass' Violin Concerto I have started to consume every piece of his music. It's been the most pleasant of discoveries. Thank you Jonahaas for sharing this lovely work!

I don't really like the piece, but the players are fabulous. Maybe you should take your bad self to New York and challenge Haas to a timp-off, since you are so much better.

dude, this is Philip Glass...what do you expect??? Horrible music, of course. But hey, kids love Hollywood and Glass fans invade youtube like Britney Spears' fans do.
Philip Glass has a very big project: his is trying to write the largest body of CRAPPY MUSIC ever. He is almost there.
don't judge a concerto by the size of its orchestra.. philip glass's music is probably the only body of work deserving of the label "minimalist."
if you listen to the past 16 years or so of his music (back to the Low Symphony) what you will find is an absolutely minimal sense of evolution. minimal content, minimal feeling.
with each year that passes glass gives us about a dozen compositions that prove he has learned a single thing or challenged him self since the late 70s. a minimalist indeed!
Berlioz once stood up during an opera performance and offered the audience 50 francs for a single worthwhile idea. He later doubled it, then trebled it. Then announced he had to leave as he had run out of money. I'm afraid that this reheated stew made me feel the same. You deserve better!!

I can't believe that is Marin Alsop!!! Glass should be so delighted to have such an embracing conductor

I liked this until Glass brought in his signature chord progessions. Gah, I hate the chord progessions.

In my humble opinion, there are three things today's popular music needs more of:
Timpanis
Electric Violins
And Talent.
Qazic12 2 years ago 44
The popular music today is lacking none of those. Classical music is listened to by LOTS of ppl and played by even more!

Do the classical players in europe make more than in america?

@Qazic12 I agree...but timpani is a plural... "timpanis" doesn't exist.

i wonder what sticks they're using. Definitely a hard mallet, the head looks especially small and even dark at times? a rubber timpani mallet?
