  • Charlie Chaplin invented it so its easier for him cos nobody is comparing him to anyone, he doesnt have to try and be like anyone else, just himself but i really really enjoy Johnny's every time i see it so i believe he has done very well :) <3

  • Of course Chaplin's one is better, he invent it ! Johnny's stille very good !

  • i didnt feel anything in my soul inside watching to depp's this thing... I dont know, we actually cant know if somebody can make is as awesomely as chaplin but it just doesnt matter at the moent uit matters that watching charles's i feel lafter and smile and warmness and so on...

  • I agree, love JD, but Charlie lived this dance. Notice his shoulders, the bouncing around in his seat, the subtle movements of his face....one can watch it over and over and never tire of the sweetness of the potato dance.

  • Thank You Johnnie for showing how Great Genius is Charlie. The name of the song in " Chichina " a typical Sicilian song.

  • AND THE WINNER IS CHAPLIN!!!

  • Doing a full screen play by play of Johnny and Charlie makes Johnny look like a self-indulgent ego maniac. This is probably why Johnny doesn't like watching himself on film anymore. Anyways, the problem with this scene is Johnny didn't create the illusion that the feet were heavy or weighted. the Feet were to be swinging in it's weight not muscled around. Johnny is koo though.

  • Charlie Chaplin owned this bit. Johnny Depp did a great job without a doubt. But Charlie wins this hands down.

  • lol i tried doing it and its EXTREMEMLY hard. johnny did a great job, but chaplin will remain the master. :)

  • depp is one of the best actors these days, but chaplin is the master of all time

  • Johnny was cute here but Chaplin is still the best. Chaplin has the musicality to pull it all together.

  • charly owns depp

  • depp reminds me a lot more of keaton

  • what's the name of the song?i like so much the song!

  • @SaHiRaFJD It's an instrumental version of Je cherche après Titine. Chaplin performed it in his movie Modern Times (from 1936).

  • ADD ROBERT DOWNEY! hahah this is so awesome!

  • The song from Modern Times is in the background! :D

  • the director for depp sucked.... the camera angle changed every few seconds so you didnt get to see much of it... With chaplin you saw the whole thing from an angle where you saw the rolls and his face which is very important.

  • Charlie Chaplin's Fork-roll dance was way better than Johnny Depp's interpretation

of the fork-roll dance. No one can do it like Charlie Chaplin.

  • Johnny the best

  • Depp is sexy...but Chaplin is the best, only he know how to do the roll dance n_n

  • haha lol

    chaplin is soooo awsome

johnny can not compare wiv charlie

  • Chaplin.. Hands down.

  • Hmmm... I loved the Depp version until I saw the original again here. Chaplin uses his head to create a whole figure. Brilliant!

  • Depp is great, but asking him to do the Greatest of them all Mr. Chaplin was just unfair. Game, set, and match Charlie Chaplin

  • Depp doesn't even look like he's having a good time.

  • one thing to understand here is that Mr Johnny Depp does not and never has followed somebody else's path. He greatly admires the works and arts that has been done/performed by the old stars, such as Mr Chaplin. He brings their work into our minds again for this generation to admire what true ART means. Depp does not follow trance, he creates them!!!

  • There is no versus. Chaplin is the greatest and Depp can keep dreaming.

  • Chaplin wins, Jonny looks like jack white there. Depp is the man though

  • Chaplin is natürlich besser, aber Depp is auch echt gut!

  • Depp is great just for the tribute :D But Chaplin is the perfection!!

  • To my mind the winner is chaplin! i love depp, but chaplin is the best for ever!

  • Chaplin wins. The camera angles were also on his side, but he was the master and even Johnny Depp can't top him.

  • Chaplin

  • definitely Chaplin...^_^

  • Chaplin win!|

  • chaplin!

  • I would just like to say that I admire your enthusiasm for one of the world's greatest innovators of cinema - a truly great human being - a master of so many arts - and even though he shunned England after he left - a truly great Londoner - well done! How may I ask did you find so much good material to post?

  • Chaplin keeps it close to the chest and it plays better - looks more in control and part of his body. He was also on a lower chair and that helps visually. But Depp did a great job paying tribute to a classic routine.

  • In the Winner is ... Chaplin!

  • awesome!

  • Chaplin

  • whats the name of the song?

  • the song is an instrumental version of the song "charabia" singed by charles chaplin in the film "modern times"

search charabia and you 'll listen to chaplin singing ;)

  • it's from the 'Modern Times' -- Titina (Je Cherche apres Titine) Music by Daniderff

  • I love Johnny depp but no one can beat Charlie chaplin

  • @TheSea753 Amem...

  • Of course Charlie!!!

  • always chaplin

  • Chaplin will always be the best. But Johnny did alright. Let's face it, no one could compare with Charlie.

  • @heathermarietaylor not a good point. that's like saying a human cannot exel or do the same as a human. Charlie Bade his craft as Tracks for a more talented and flexible future. that's why he did what he did. not so we can just sit around and say oh no I cant do that no body can do it Like Chaplin. NO! we can do what we want and We CAN DO IT BETTER,

  • It's the first time I saw Chaplin doing that show. For me the winner is JOHNNY DEPP !!!

  • What?! How can there even be a comparison?!

Charles Chaplin's genius and human understanding cannot, and can never be matched by anyone that follows.

  • I really love Johnny Depp. Is a great actor... No, the greatest! But Charlie Chaplin is the story of cinema.

  • Johnny is one of my fav actors but Charlie will always do it better :)

  • YET ANOTHER THING I HAVE IN COMMON WITH BOTH MICHAEL JACKSON AND HOHNNY DEPP: We both like Charlie Chaplin. lol

  • naaa...charlie makes me laugh, depp don't - cos he's not funny! Charlie is chaplin and no-one else is!

  • Charlie, what a genius! Though Depp has been practising for 3 weeks, Chaplin's improvisation is much better!:)

  • Depp's character doesn't have the Chaplin finesse, but then the character of Benny is supposed to be awkward and vague, socially, so I think his slightly inept homage worked well.

Buster Keaton also reprised the Arbuckle roll dance in "the Frozen North" in 1922, and "the Gold Rush" wasn't until 1925.

  • chaplin no contest.

  • Chaplin does it the best, but Johnny just looks soo cute doing it!

  • chaplin wins

  • i think charlie chaplin was better in doing it but johnny was also cute

  • is there a full interview of johnny in the beggining part somewhere?

  • Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle did it originally in 1917 in his film "The Rough House."

  • Oh, and almost forgot.

Johnny is awesomely talented and, well, HOT.

  • Well, we cannot compare these two men, it's nonsense. First of all, Johnny is an actor used to a different cinematogrphic method, meaning that he's son of another actors and movies generation.

Charlie Chaplin is the one and only, how can we make a comparison?

He's the special one, no doubt on that.

  • no one can beat then, they are the number one, and i ever say "this is a stupid question" charlie is not a actor, they are a legend

  • And... Charlie wins by a great margin. Sorry Depp.

  • I think I spotted why Charlie's one is better. Aside from it being the original, Charlie manages to keep his hands basically pinned to the same spot on his chest whereas Johnny Depp's hands move around quite a bit.

  • I have not words.

    Please, song name?

  • I think Robert Downey Jr did a much better job. He's brilliant in the movie Chaplin.

  • Actors today suck. This is proof. Most can't dance or sing. They are just one trick ponies.

  • Touché! The oldtimers grew up in vaudeville and did everything. They were multi-talented all-around entertainers, home grown. Few are left of that era. Nothing can beat their stuff!!

  • Well, not true. Not true at all, a lot of actors do sing and dance, instead. Johnny is one of them and this cannot be questioned.

And Kate Winslet, too. She's perfect in everyhting she does. I think there is some other more, but right now, I'm not comin' up with anyone else.

  • Good job! But sorry Johnny, but Chaplain's is better.

  • Don't worry. I'm sure that even Johnny would agree with you. In a documentary about Chaplin, Depp explained how difficult it was for him to get this right. He recognized that it was pure art, and not just the matter of a man holding two forks and moving them around.

  • okay, what most of you are missing is the camera work in the Chaplin film vs. the Depp film. Please note that the Chaplin bit correctly places the view so that Chaplin appears as a miniature person--head, torso, legs and feet (forks and buns). The Depp bit wrongly is so far back that Depp is not a minature or marionette, but so guy playing with forks and rolls...it is not executed well. Depp is a very fine actor, but i think any blame for this not working as well rests with the director.

  • I totally agree. Plus, Depp doesn't keep the tops of the forks in a "fixed point" in relationship to his head like Chaplin does. That helps to give the illusion of the forks as legs on a smaller person with a big head.

  • Anyone have an idea what the song is that starts at about 35 sec. ?? Love it...need to find! Thanks

  • It's "Titine". If you do a search, you'll find Chaplin singing a gibberish song to it in "Modern Times". You can find it on several Chaplin movie music albums (he didn't write it), and other CDs too.

  • Really like this movie. I believe J. Depp became a great actor when he met his lover and had kids. Growing up gives you more depth and wisdom to dig deep to perform a charactor with layers.

  • well i decided to play with the big boys and try it out myself. it REALLY is sooooo difficult to do LOL imma add it to a video response, Benny & Joon was cool, LOVE JD, and well Charlie...was just the master.

  • both of them were good dont matter i dont rate who is better who is not only different old days and new days verison both are damn good just good as the orgianl i love them both i do wish johnny depp can make more of these all old slapstick comedy come back remade of oldie into new movie newer slapstick that would be awsome

  • I don't think some people realize that Johnny isn't trying to be as good or better than Chaplin. He's simply showing his respect for him.

  • exactly. Like everyone should know that not matter how good an actor is, he can never ever equal up to the amazing gifts of Chaplin,

  • love them both but chaplin does a much better job

  • It doesnt even look like Depp watched the original. Chaplins hands stay still the whole time while his body moves. Depp does the opposite.

  • well Charlie Chaplin created it. He inspired no doubt Depp, i can see a lot of the inspiration. And i think he would of made a good Chaplin but RDJ just...absolutely nailed it without a doubt. I liked Benny and Joon. love Depp. in essence all 3 of em have that magical, mysterious special quality that attracts us to them and their incredible work. Chaplin however without a doubt, in this round, wins. I mean this was his LIFE. no camera effects, the stuff CC did.. today still blows me aways!

  • Robert Downey Jr. did such a

    phenomenal job.

i don't think Johnny would have been good

    for it.

  • I give Johnny an A for effort, maybe a B- on execution.

  • i heard johnny really wanted to play chaplin in the movie but just couldnt get the little ticks down rdj did a really good job tho

  • chaplin for sure. it actually looks like it's a big head with legs.

  • Chaplin with no doubt :)

  • OMG!That was brilliant!

    I love Charlie and Johnny!

    Two favorite actors EVER!

    <33

  • Johnny Depp. The geeatest talent now on the planet. Chaplin the greatest atriste of all time

  • What a great vid. Two of the most important comic personalities ever. I adore Chaplin.

  • Johnny is an amazing actor, and his character was fantastic in this movie. Charlie Chaplin is a legend though, and nothing will ever be able to top the origonal.

  • chaplin stole this from fatty arbuckle he did this eight years before in a film called the rough house.

  • COUGH CHAPLIN WINS

  • DUH!!!

  • Delight delight delight!! Don't know where you found it, only know I'm so glad you did!!Thanks for sharing this lovely vid--YES! Chaplin I think has the slight edge only becos of his expression when he crosses the forks--he was going for broke adorable--Mr. Depp could have carried the same, my guess is he's already there on adorable. Yeah, baby--tre yaya'. oops just read SmartBlonde's comment--great minds we! Sam's the best.

  • Johnny's an excellent actor. I think if his character had called for more expression like Charlie Chaplin, then he would have done it, definitely. But his character was almost shy in his comedy. It worked well here :)

but you can't beat the original! Chaplin of course did it better than Johnny. I think Johnny wasn't trying to beat him; he was just paying respects to a unique and groundbreaking actor who shaped hollywood into what it is today.

  • chaplin genius

  • yea chaplin is better.. but like everyone said, johnny did this for only one month :] so i'm just if he did this for years he'd be just as good, maybe better

  • depp's performance had to be different to fit in with the (autistic?)character he was playing.

  • he wasn't autistic

  • He was dyslexic.

  • i don't even think he was dyslexic. he just didn't know how to write.. he could read obviously b/c of the "help wanted" sign but... yeah LMAO

  • He could read it because the letters were big.

  • :/ LMFAO i'm baffled at how you come to that conclusion, rosethorn18.

when i was 3, and couldn't read, it didn't matter how large the letters were. i didn't yet know my letters, sounds, etc. enough to put together words, let alone a lot of words themselves to be able to read.

meaning = size of letters matters NOT when it comes to knowing words. if you know the word, you can read it. if you don't well then you're not gonna know what it says no matter how big it's written

  • Allot of my friends are dyslexic so I know how to tell if someone is or isn't. If the print is larger, it's easier for them to read.

  • i don't remember them *saying in the film* that he was dyslexic. the fact that Joon writes the letter *for* Depp's character says a lot - it says he can't write; you see him struggle for quite a few minutes on one word. and he can't fill in his application either. i'd say it's cuz he can't read. he can write his name & that's about it

  • He had actually written a bit of the letter before Joon started writing for him. He was probably made fun of when he was a kid because it's harder for him to write and write because of his dyslexia so he doesn't want to write anything for fear of being laughed at. They don't need to *say* that he was dyslexic for it to be that way. And, if you know the signs, it's quite easy to tell that he is.

  • No? But he was probably an aspie.

  • Charlie Chaplin is such a classic, there will never be another him. Robert Downey Jr. did a great job portraying him in the movie. I love Johnny Depp, he's no Chaplin, but he only practiced for a month so i'll give him some credit.lol:)

  • lolol both are amazing, and of course the original is "better" but thats not the point of it in benny & joon to be better, its just a random funny part of the movie. both made me laugh XD

  • I agree! lol Chaplin is better but he's been doing it for years, Johnny,,, a month! lol soo he did a fantastic job! YAYAYAYAYYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYYAYAYY JOHNNY! lol, come on people lets give johnny a round of applause! (claps hands like crazy!)

  • nothin can top chaplin lol but i think johnny did an amazing job, really good, YAY JOHNNY!

  • Chaplin > Downey > Depp

A valiant effort, but Chaplin takes the gold (obviously!), and Depp the bronze. Still, it's clear he put in quite a lot of work at it. Much better than I could do, certainly.

  • Two of the most attractive man on earth..Great attempt by Johnny..But I don't think no one can do it better than the legend itself.

  • Sorry Depp, chaplin

has got you hands down. Chaplin is the master though, so nice try.

  • chaplin wins for suuurre!! he is the master at the roll dance :P but johnny did make a good attempt, like melanstone18 said johnny just doesn't have the eybrow motion down

  • can anyone recommend a book on chaplin? I have his autobiog but whats the best biog to start with?

  • they both are amazing

  • depp hasnt gt=ot the eyebrow motion

  • Chaplin wins!

  • impossible act for Mr. Depp to follow. I applaud the effort however.

  • me too. no one can ever do it as well as Charlie Chaplin did.

  • Depp is so amazing. In B&J, he had me holding my breath then gasping for air.I totally empathized with Joon watching the routine in the park and falling in love.

  • I thought they were potatos....

  • me too! lol

  • i love the roll dance! :D

i tried to do it a few times...failed miserably xD

  • I like how you did this. And how you used some of Chaplin's original music, instead of another song or something.

  • Lol Johnny Depp is so cool to show respect for Chaplin. Even if he's not as good with potatoes - but i don't think that was the point.

  • It's not potatoes. It's bread.

  • Respect shown to a great by a great ... Thanks for posting this video.

  • just like some people said, johnny didn`t try to imitate charlie!!

in this scene, he just showed his respect for chaplin and what he represents 4 all cinema actors and directors in the world!

    great job both!!

  • doesnt come close to doing it like chaplin but nice try.

  • Lets see him do the C-Walk with that...

  • Thank You Johnny for showing how hard to learn The Art of Motion Picture. I Congratulate You !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Many thanks to comment my film.

  • Seriously people, I don't think Johnny is trying to perform better than Chaplin. He is trying to show respect for the man by doing his best.

  • There's a major difference between "imitating" and "understanding". Johnny didn't just imitate Charlie, he understood... That's one of the reasons he's more than just a pretty face!

  • Both amazing men, bursting with talent. Johnny learned from the best, no doubt about that. Benny & Joon showcases Johnny's awesome skills and impressions of gags by not only Chaplin, but Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd as well. The '20s were definitely a golden age of comedy :)

  • i have never laughed so hard in my life at that part of benny and joon hahahahah!!!!!

  • gotta do that =D

  • the music at the end is from modern times...

anyway chaplin is da absolute best!! ive already done it in a restaraunt when i was twelve...:P

  • Gosh you make great Charlie Chaplin videos :>.

Johnny was ABSOLUTELY CORRECT in what he said about Charlie's table ballet skit: It's not just the feet, it's the way he moves his entire body and the little glances he makes. Charlie wins in my opinion :DDDDDD

  • nice vid

  • Depp es muy bueno, pero no hay comparaci´n posible, en esta comparación Charlie le barre. No hay color, Chaplin es único.

The first song is from de film The gold rush, the film of the scene that appear in the video, the original. The second song is from the film Modern times. Two master pieces.

Sorry my bad english, I'm spanish.

    CHAPLIN THE BEST!!!

    AND ChaplinsViolin TOO!

  • I love both of them, no need to compare, they are great actors and wonderful men, funny and wonderful video !

  • Oh my, what an idiot you are LOL.

If you hate Johnny Depp so much, then why the hell are you watching his videos? To torture yourself? Go outside, it might make you feel better. And stop hating Johnny so much, while your at it. No body's twisting your arm to watch his movies.

  • johnny great actor [i love him]; but charlie is the ORIGINAL!

  • I so want to do that in a restraunt one day.

  • excelente

  • Chaplin's smile is adorable.

  • OMG Agreed!!

That's one of the things I love most about his skit is his smile :)

  • CHAPLIN WINSS!!!!!!!!! but johnny is an okay actor!, well good, but not great or as great as sir charles chaplin!

  • Johnny Depp is ok, but nobody can equal the great Charlie... Yep, Charlie won...

  • chaplin wins

  • good work

  • charlie was a special human.

  • That was great!!! Good hiow you put them together!!!

  • chaplin plays unique.

  • BRAVO!!!!! SIMPLY WONDERFUL!!!!

  • Depp didn't have nearly the amount of expression that Chaplin had.

  • Cat, I think that was a character thing. Sam wasn't always very expressive.

  • I think JD tried his hardest and I admire him for admitting how hard it was to imitate Charlie. I love Johnny but Chaplin is the bomb!

  • do you think Johnny Depp tried out for the CHAPLIN movie and put the roll dance in Benny and Joon because he didnt get it?

  • Why did it happen in Johnny's movie?

  • Look at Aidan Quinn face when he does that... hilarious...

  • As much as I love Johnny Depp, Chaplin's my hero, and he always comes out on top. <3

  • i think chaplin did it better because he did the original

but i think johnny did a great job too cuz its hard to copy things like that, and cuz its by charlie himself it makes it harder to match x
