This has always been my favorite pose and I've never had any trouble from it but I decided to listen to the pro and try it with the blanket to avoid any future problems. However, I find it incredibly difficult to get into the pose this way and once in it very wobbly. Do you think I'll damage myself if I keep doing it the way i'm used to and that feels good and balanced? Is it OK as long as I've got a space between neck and floor?
Thanks for all yr brilliant videos! Yr an amazing instructor!
finally!!!!! Every time I do a shoulder stand or attempt to do one, my neck is always bruised afterwards and I get scared because it hurts. So I will try it your way, and hopefully I can avoid the pains. I need my yoga!!!!
thanks so much for this sadie...i have avoided shoulderstand alot because i felt my neck compressed as i was jamming my chin in just like you said...im going to try this and tilt my chin more up and see how the energy flow is..hope all is well with you...
sadie, thank you for your videos!! i am enjoying my practice at home and whenever i have a question about something, i can always find one of your videos with a great explanation and it is always a pleasure to hear your voice!! thank you again!! Namaste!!!
Hi sadie, thanks for your tutorial. I have a question though. I've been doing the shoulderstand for a while but my pose is not "straight". Any tips on improving that? Thx... xoxo
The pose can be a little "v" shaped, with your hips leaning into your hands somewhat. To be straight requires a ton of back body flexibility. Keep the neck curve natural [space bhind your neck] and only work yourself straight if it's not pulling your neck flat or your chin into your throat. Balance, back off, and enjoy. This should be an inversion and energetic release into the head more than a neck and shoulder stretch!
I dunno I never liked doing shoulderstand with extra padding. It makes me feel off balance having my head not level with my shoulders and I don't get as deep of a stretch as a result. Everyone always tells me doing shoulderstand flat on your mat can easily cause neck injuries but I never had any problems.
There's a reason everyone is telling you that...because it's a dangerous pose! And just because you're not feeling any effects now doesn't mean you won't later. Injuries of the spine are cumulative, meaning that you can do the pose 5000 times, and the 5001th time could injure your spine for life. Ask yourself if that stretching feeling in your neck is worth the risk..and can you get that feeling any other way? Not to be gloomy, but knowing anatomy, it's a worrisome pose. xoxoSadie
