  • why does Vince Gill get to be Vince Gill? I want to be Vince Gill, dammit.

  • Cleanliness is Godlyness!..Fenders and Music man amps!

  • @MrTP5647 I see a line of Fender amps. One lone MM amp in that row of big Fenders. They honestly don't even need an amp that big. At least it's not a line of double stack Marshall.

  • Danny Gatton e Vince Gill são muito bons mesmo.

Deixo o link para o meu video de country. Abraço a todos !!!

    watch?v=s2wZh-c_cgg

  • What is Albert thinking with that tone??? Al, Strap on a Tele again...

  • Country Guitar Players are Most Certainly Underrated Rock Guitar players wish they could play real licks like these GODS Right Here Vince, Danny, and Albert Lee!!!!

  • nice thing about youtube - we all have opinions. Danny :Gatton hard to beat in this category.

  • Didn't know this one existed...all of that guitar genius on one stage. My only wish is the sound of the guitar solos were a little more out front, their solos seem a bit buried under the bass and drums. Vince's sound isn't bad, but Danny's and Albert's sound could have been mixed better...

  • After listening to the top Tele players I would have to say Vince is the best. He adds soul to his smooth playing. They are all great however. Albert has to ditch the Music Man and go back to a Tele..The M M just can't cut with a Tele...

  • They are all great players. But Vince's style is so melodic and smooth. I'm not much of a country buff but Vince's guitar playing blows me away!! Vince is an all around musician. Great guitar player, songwriter, wonderful voice, not twangy like most of your country singers.

  • its important to realize the context of this performance. national audience, up and comer vince gill, plugging a new "hit" song, and he chooses to pay respect to two of the greatest "unknown" guitarists of any time (danny being #1 of course....) just when i thought i couldnt have any more respect for mr. gill...he commands more from me....unfortunately, one can also witness first hand the frustration mr. gatton had to endure on a daily basis. rip danny.

  • Vince has got "the tone!!!!"

  • I may be wrong, but I think this was filmed not long before Danny took his own life. I don't think he was intimidated by anyone, but he has said before he died that he didn't care for travelling away from home, a symptom of his depression. This was a great weekly show they had on TNN...I miss the network the way it was.

  • 素晴らしい!

    GREAT GUITAR PLAYING!

  • I gotta say - that to my eyes at least - Danny ain't on his game here. I know the guy's a monster, but I've seen him play a lot better than this...

and before the flamers come on, no, I'm not likely to be up jamming with Vince & Albert any time soon, but I'm a big fan of ALL of them, Danny included - he just doesn't look comfortable here... I sometimes wonder if he was a bit intimidated of the "name" players. I know about "The Humbler", but he clearly had some demons he wrestled with...

  • @shearn666 he was apparently very ill when he played this show he seemed a little out of it during the whole concert

  • Another cut seemingly from the same show is at "One Way Rider - Albert Lee, Vince Gill & Danny Gatton" on YouTube.

  • One of the previous commenter pointed out Mark O'Connor (on fiddle) in this line-up; he could have picked up a flat top and joined the party with his incredible skills (two-time National Flatpicking champ, before RSI forced him to play violin only).

And to add to the discussion on fantastic players, may I add the not-to-be overlooked modern master Jimmy Bruno, for whom nothing is out of reach.

    No Bests here, only Greats.

  • I love all these guys, but the tone that Albert Lee gets out of that guitar is absolutely amazing. It sounds almost baritone in timbre.

    Big Ron

  • It makes me PUKE that no matter how good the Video some stupid Dick head has to get on and run someone down,There are NO lOSERS on this Stage ALL of them are some of the BEST pickers to ever touch a neck. So when the MORONS who run thie players down get their OWN RECORD deal and get to play with Vince or another star CAL US! until then STFU

  • this is killer ,albert lee is just great and no matter how much acclaim he gets is never enough, vince gil is underated and just on top of his game here, but danny gatton ridiculously underated, its criminal how good he was and he never got the acclaim he deserves, Gatton was then a serious monster of a guitar player,RIP Danny you are still THE HUMBLER

  • Man there are some ignorant comments on here. I suck at playing guitar right now but Vince, Danny, GE Smith, Paisley, and all the others that make that sweet, bright, twangy Tele sound, are the reason I went and bought a tele in hopes i could learn even a little bit of what they were doin. I love Vince, definately haven't heard anything like him.

  • The Nashville Network was a hodgepodge of mostly corny shows with bad toupee / denture has-beens, but American Music Shop was easily the best show there. The players and guests were top drawer, and as a variety player preferring rock I watched this show almost every week. The mediocre quiz shows and (usually) talk shows pale in comparison to this.

  • Good call on John Hughey... Conway Twitty's steeler for 20 years then Vince

    picked him up........

  • pheww!! Hot stuff.. . just caught Gill, Lee, along w/ James Burton & Ricky Scaggs

in a club in Chicago last night.... mind melting stuff.... one of the greatest guitar-centric gigs I have EVER been fortunate enough to witness. Lee & Gill were

nearly neck & neck for chops & taste.... Burton was like the eccentric Grandpa,

ripping crazy double stop licks from the corner of the stage. Just INCREDible.

These 4 guys were playing at such a High level of improv that it defies any

    logic.

  • Looks like the late John Hughey on steel

  • These videos don't do Danny Gatton's talent justice. I saw him live at Wolf Trap, McLean Virginia, about a year before he died, and I've never seen anyone faster. He was ... flat out... phenomenal! My jaw dropped the whole evening. Of course, everyone has their own opinion as to who they think was best, and I respect that...but my vote goes with Danny.

  • And we've got Mark O'Connor driving that fiddle to boot!

  • Dude was lucky enough to see Danny Gatton live and I'm telling you there was NO ONE as good. Also so Vince and Albert at the Tribute for Danny and they are incredible. Thing is Danny could do anything on the guitar and all at the same time. Hard to believe unless you saw him in person. I'm just sayin......

  • This is the coolest a Telegasm

  • Well said allegradrums!!!

  • Every time I see Gatton with other people he is ALWAYS to low in the mix

  • Plus DG was a ,straight into the amp' person with the amp cranked with maybe occasionally a bit of slapback echo or reverb....maybe his onstage volume was so loud so he was pulled back a bit ..Vince Gill usually uses a compressor or an overdrive to boost his solos and albert lee has his korg A3 with compression on top of his musicman amp..you can clearly see it in the background...possibly why the engineer could turn them up in the FOH because with a cleaner sound their onstage volume was lower

  • Personally i think the 3 guys here are smokin' hot players and i love them all..the rest of the band are great too... i've watched a few vids from this show on youtube and i think apart from the fact it's an old show copied from what looks like VCR,the engineer on the original mix has Dannys guitar far too low in the mix to be heard properly..also if you look at the amp behind DG you can see the mic is off axis by accident or intent i don't know but this could also be part of the problem...

  • Albert smokes them both

  • All great.

Put up Mason, Guthrie Trapp and JD Simo and it would be just as amazing...IMO

Teleplayers are born ....like great left handed pitchers...

  • anyone know what Danny was doing with his ring finger at those points in the solo where e was holding a bend and like flicking his ring and pinky fingers at something?

  • I'm laughing at all of the critics. Ever player on every instrument on this stage was flat out burning. The entire jam is complete joy. All lay one out becuase he's so good you're not even noticing him. Martin Parker on the Drums. His groove is so deep.....it's a trench. And every one of the players on stage periodically glances at him, smiles, and nods in thanks for being so right on that they can do their thing while he does his.

    Shit People. Enjoy the artistry.

  • Danny is the greatest guitarist to ever live in my opinion

  • Amen brother!

  • Vince is amazing too, but It's just my opinion that DANNY GATTON RULES!

  • Kind of feel sorry for Albert having to follow Danny.

  • Hey pittresident, it's the other way around. Danny Gatton and Albert Lee are the legends who taught Vince Gill what he knows.

  • i hope your not being serious because if you are you are an absolute moron

  • well,...vince gill is ok...not too bad...but...yeah..that's pretty accurate...

  • What could possibly possess you to write such a thing, rhinobassdude? I see that you're 49 years old. I would have thought 13. I used to be proud to be a musician until YouTube came along and people like you started posting in threads like this. Fortunately, no one who has ever 'made it' would think or say such a thing. I'll put it down to you not having a shred of talent and being terminally bitter and twisted because of it. I'm sorry for you.

  • @planetalk I see what you mean about the comment...you're 200% right. Many think they're clever by being obnoxious/plain stupid. The best comment was posted by Albert Lee's daughter on "One Way Rider".

  • @rhinobassdude classy indeed!

  • @pittresident I truly hope you are not serious, and Liza Jane is the name of the song, one of Vince's most popular songs actually.

  • @pittresident ; Maturity- A concept you obviously shy away from. Try to envision a world where a musician (or two) have escaped your narrow-minded view. Here's another concept you should introduce yourself to ; The Golden Rule.

  • @pittresident You're just exposing yourself as the idiot that you are by making such a naive and ignorant statement. I love Vince's playing, he's a damn good guitarist, but Albert Lee is far better than he is. Even Vince himself has stated this.

  • I have just returned to this thread after a long time away...And i am sorry but Alberts playing on this tune is with out a doubt more imaginative than Gatton of Gill....fact !!!

  • I think D.G is playing down at Vince and Alberts level. Most session players learn to curb their playing to fit the song and the people they are playing with as this tends to get them more work in the future. You must remember Albert Lee is a one trick pony,if youve heard it once.....But thats o.k most players are, then you get Danny Gatton a bar player who has the keys to the sweet shop when it comes to licks and taste.I dont think anyone is the best guitarist but I find D.G is more enjoyable.

  • I said it before and I will say it again the Man the myth the legend Danny Gatton was probably the best picker on the stage that night albert and vince are good but I think both of them would tell you that Danny was better than them

  • Gatton was out of this world. I love his playing. Scotty Anderson, Brent Mason, Breau, Reed... We all know the list of greats. I love listening to ALL fine pickers, old & new. But somehow it is Albert lee"s guitar rifs that move my soul like no other.

  • sparkyjoeslim, I think Scotty is the most perfect technically like a machine, Lenny the all time guitar genius of dificlult style, Gatton the mosot spectacular improvised solosit, Mason is a solid Nashville studio session man. like to see Hank Garland and Brent Mason jam. Or Johny Smith and Wes Montgomery with Jimmy Bryant. But Gatton is the most impressive and I should know having studied them all and have seen 86 or 87 dvd/vhs and heard 127 audio of Gatton. Things better than youtube...

  • I'll go along with that. In the late 80's early 90's, I was a young man in a band & we practiced in Waldorf Md. We played hard rock, punk rock, blues rock...the type of music in which most young guitarists can express themselves. I heard of Gatton, (local legend)but didnt know enough to see him. (I was young & didn't care for his style) Years later I discovered what a great talent I had missed. oops!

  • Ya for the record his "sound" was off because of one simple point....Danny didn't like to turn down lol. Me neither so I understand why this happens....the soundmen cut him out over and over and over again on TV shows (check out the one on Conan with Arlen Roth)...which made him finally say "That's it Im never playing on tv again"....and Danny was the best period.

  • Did anyone besides me fast forward through the singin to all the playin parts? ;)

  • Fans of Albert Lee may like to check out: Luxury Liner on Old Grey Whistle Test and a version of Country Boy by Albert Lee, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell

  • Danny had a off night plus there was issues with the mic on his amp, hence why he sounds so distant.Vince's tone sounds awesome this night.Albert sounds incredible although I prefer him on a Tele.

  • I heard that Danny was actually pretty Ill when he played that night Danny was a genious best guitar player ever ask Johnny Seaton or Billy Bogus guy that played with Danny Billy told me Danny could make the guitar sound like a Mack truck taking off shifting gears and churpin tires Id like to hear Albert do that

  • MidasHert3 yeah baby you are correct sir. When DG played Letterman he ended the jam with the guitar screaching and fans literally screaming and not for Letterman either. Danny and Paul Schaefer used to play with Robert Gordan in 1983...

  • I have to agree with keviswatt....if you ask me, danny gatton looks totally intimidated by lee, and overplays to compensate. by that I mean he throws down a bunch of inappropriate 'speedy" licks and comes off sounding like a try-hard. they just flow from lee.

  • Its rare to see Danny Gatton off his game a little. But compared to the best of audio and video of Gatton the Albert Lee performance isn't even close. Everybody get the Gattons Greatest solos cd and that will help you understand.

  • Of course, everyone is entitled to his opinion, but to say that Danny Gatton was ever intimidated by ANY guitarist is laughable. The highly imaginative lines of Gatton put the fantastic but more conventional single-string lines of Lee in the shade (don't get me wrong: Albert Lee is a giant). Maybe it's true that Danny's execution (and his sound) were off that night, but his style is more complex & difficult anyway. And they were all doing "speedy licks".

  • fair enough.

I still stand by what I said before, but I do have a question....why is having a more "complex" style make him better than everyone else. I don't know about you, but I listen to music based on how good it sounds and if it elicits an excited response from deep down or not. how hard it is to play never enters my mind until I attempt to learn it!

Albert Lee sounds better, simple as that.

  • Hey, to each his own. It's all a matter of taste. Having a complex style doesn't by itself make anyone a better musician; many such are little better than highly-skilled typists. And some extremely limited players can hit just the right note. Gatton, however, was the total package: mind-blowing virtuosity AND incredible feel. Having both, yes, he does stand above the rest - except for Scotty Anderson, IMO.

  • It's so hard to pick one but top 3 for me used to be Hendrix, Beck, SRV, with Winter, Morse, E.Johnson but I grew up rock until i realized the best were really Gatton, Breau, Scotty, Wes, Johny Smith. Scotty is technically perfect but overplays and not enough sould/feel but plays like a machine; love Scotty. Breau from brain to fingers best genius ever but Gatton is too much with his spectacular improvised soloing and virtuosity; virtuoso Danny and Lenny rule!!!

  • @gattonmaster Anyone who is familiar with all or a lot of Albert's work will realize definitively that he is far better than any of the people you mentioned... Far better.

  • I totally agree .... No offence to the other 2 guys (I love 'em both), but Danny on a good day, from a technique perspective, wud leave Vince & Albert standing .... Listen to what he gets up to on "Mystery Train" w/ Delbert McClinton !!! God speed Danny !!

  • Growing up in the DC area listening to what we referred to as; The Musician's Musician, a term of endearment given to both Danny & Roy Buchanan. To be painfully objective I suppose it could be said that Danny was "too" mechanical, a point which is difficult to illustrate unless compared to someone like Roy Buchanan who could play a note large enough to drive a Mack Truck through. It was once said that we admire musicians who are best in their field (Blues, Country etc), Gatton was best in all

  • @1954tele Yes he was...

  • " Gatton shows them all up" !! Are you kidding ? Albert mops the floor with Gatton

  • If you saw and heard all the Gatton material I have you would understand. Seek out the youtube fans who have seen or heard my audio and video. For the last time the gig with Albert and Vince Gill he didn't play well; it happens. But the best of Gatton audio and video is absolutely spectacular!!!!!!!!!!

  • danny gatton shows them all up

  • i'm afraid i disagree...it was a bit too much...too many triplets for my taste. albert just flat out played him by not playing so much.

  • BigBoiJC wverybody has off days even Danny. Danny even said he played shitty that day. But the best of Gatton is awesome. Ask some of the youtube people who have seen and heard like Nileswest69, Nipperooney, and others. His best shows are absolutely stunning!!!

  • Danny held back with players he didn't know too well. If you don't believe me check my comments on the Country licks 88 Club Soda Gatton youtube clip. I list the best audio and video ever witnessed by mankind. Even though others I like alot like Breau, Scotty, Wes, Bryant, J. Smith, Django, Jimi, Beck, SRV, E. Johnson, Morse, WInter, Gallup, Maphis, Christian, Sete, Chet, Burrell, WIlliams, Bream, Segovia, Hedges, Holdsworth, Tbone, ALbert, BB, Freddie.

  • This was an awesome show, and I wish I could find the whole video of the show. By the way, what in the world is going on with the timing in this clip?? I almost makes it impossible to listen to.

  • You'd have to ask Vince, he made it all happen, the director, the dictator. I would like to find myself a source for all these shows. There has been nothing else since like it, for sure.

  • @bobcon95 I have a copy of the entire show! Lucky me!

  • my top 10 list] country 1 danny gatton 2 chet atkins 3 Don rich 4 scotty Moore 5 james Burton 6 jerry reed 7 vince gill 8 albert lee 9 jimmy olander 10 brad paisley 11 steve cropper 12 brent mason 13 roy clark 14roy buchannan 15 david ausherman
  • Danny Gatton, Lenny Breau, Scotty Anderson, Wes Montgomery, Johny Smmith, Jimmy Bryant, Django reinhardt, Bola Sete, Hank Garland, Tal Farlowe.

  • Gatton got his lunch ate again.

  • @IncorruptibleTruth You about an IDIOT ACE!.

First of all NO Player on that Stage would EVER get their LUNCH ATE by ANYONE!.

When you get on the Stage with Vince or Albert Lee and stand next to them and play let ALL of us KNOW.Until then SHUT THE FUCK UP Rude Urreverant Asshole feel good talking about a DEAD MAN who can't defend himself,I bet Danny would beat your stupid ass WHAT a MORON!

  • I don't think Buchanan is 14th or could be called country.

  • why would you say that Buchannan could make a guitar sound like a steel if he wanted to steve Cropper wasn't labeled as a country player Either Niether was Danny.

my list was in No order it was just my top 15

  • midashert13 understood my friend

    Peace Brother...

  • These are simply the best pickers in Nashville, only one missing is Brent Mason, Mr. Hellecaster himself.

  • i agree some serious heavyweights being mentioned...i was given dannys hotlicks video as a present for my 21st birthday(a good few years ago...heh heh) and was blown away..sadly missed and a real shame cause i think he would of eventully got wider recognition especially wih labels like steve vai's 'favoured nations' around now to bring guitar players to a wider audience.. thanks to the poster for the video as the only other i could find from this gig was 'one way rider'.....

  • There must be some massive jams going on in heaven ( in reply to gattonmaster ).

  • What about Glenn Campbell. Have you ever seen him do William Tell Overature with the guitar on top of his head. Do a YouTube search. He is amazing too.

  • Awesome

  • Wow, with all the heavyweight guitar names being dropped here, I can't believe no one has yet mentioned the great James Burton, arguably the king of them all!

  • What about Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed They are two of the best as well

  • Chet is in the pickers top 10 but Jerry Reid is like Doyle Dykes. A fast picking hand but the fingering(left hand) isn't among the best. Jerrys Breakdown with Chet in 75 is very good. formally mastercollector and now gattonmaster

  • Burton, Reed, and Atkins were all great especially Chet, and Reed, but Scotty Anderson blows them away for sure. Lenny Breau is more talented than these guys, and Gatton being the most spectacular improvised soloist of all time...

  • Gatton's done with 3 notes before they had time to leave the amp.

  • Thanx for posting This!

  • F*A*N*T*A*S*T*I*C

  • Vince has a singing voice as smooth as silk. What an outstanding singer/ songwriter and guitarist. Danny Gatton is no longer with us but he had a good life while he was here and enjoyed the music and playing for people. I saw him play live in concert twice and met him. A great guy and one of the best guitarists that ever lived.

  • awesome performance from all 3. i first albert lee on jerry lee lewis "london session". they have such respect for each other. damn, danny we miss you.

  • hey i'm trying to diversify my taste in music, and this is just...woah. increadible. can somebody tell me the name of this song?

  • The song is Liza Jane. It's from Vince's 1991 album Pocket Full of Gold. Glad you like it. Vince and Albert are still around, but Danny's not.

  • Vince transcends the country classification. He just plain leaves what most people call country in the dust. Most other performers of todays country pale in comparison. Add the other two and I'm in guitar heaven.

  • Man, I would have loved to be in the audience for this one.

  • Must have been amazing. I've seen both Vince and Albert live before multiple times separately. And a monster musician like Gatton comes along once a lifetime and bites the dust way too soon. I just can't imagine how Stevie Ray Vaughan would be playin now.

Vince Gill puts it all together as a singer/ songwriter, musician and all around good person. Merry Christmas.

  • Steve to me was the the best blues and Johny Winter right behnd him. How about Joe Bonamassa for todays blues players. Does he remind you at all of Eric Johonson. It takes a while and dozens and dozens of live audio and video to really get the full effect of how great Gatton was. Theres no other way to say it.Ask all the big colleectors.

  • collectors. would somebody mind giving me spelling lessons?

  • My son and I have enjoyed A G3 concert or two.Never with Eric J tho.Fantastic shows. Joe&Eric along with the G3 crews are technically fantastic. But,to my "boomer" ears, they don't have the depth I need to be a long term listener.Stevie?...there was some real emotion there...style..techique.Gatton?? Sometimes genius is pain.If ya know what I mean.Dream Theater was very impressive to me. Some great originality there..at least live they were good.

  • zydecook agree; Eric Johnson was real good in the mid 80's but he peaked. He use to play dificult what I call motzart violin scales but he peaked. Danny Gatton is on another planet. No way to describe that! Yeah Steve Ray Vaughn is on everybodys top 10 list. Its very hard to make it just 10; I say you have to have at least 20!!!

  • continued best of top 20 & honorable mention: Rhodes, van Halen,Schenker,Uli Roth,Satriani, Vai,Schon, Santana,,Gilmore, walsh,Bolin,Metheny,Smith, Stephan,Vignola,Strong,Rice,Kotke,Roth,Grossman,Fripp,Dimeola, McGlaughlin,Blackmore,Petrucci,; the wells run dry boys I can't think right now but check my first list...

  • Let me add Fahey, Bensusan, Clarence White (another who died too soon) ...telecaster string bender guitar player par excellance and Phil Keaggy.

  • zydecook Thanks, I'll have to check out Fahey and Clarence White, never heard of them. Bensusan I saw a concert video of him; pretty unique.Phil Keaggy I first heard of around mid 80's. I saw a couple concert videos and an instructional where he says Holdsworth, and Eric Johnson knocked him out the first time heard them.

  • Danny Gatton,Lenny Breau, Scotty Anderson, Wes Montgomery, Johny Smith, Jimmy Bryant, Django Reinhardt, Hank Garland, Kenny Burrell, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Morse, Alan Holdsworth, Chet Atkins, Bola Sete, Michael Hedges, Tal Farlowe, Joe Pass, John Williams, Julian Bream, Andres Segovia, and Jimi Hendrix. That is my all time top 22.mastercollector

  • have to add Steve Morse, Yngwie,Dimeola, McGlaughlin, Lane, Roberts, Rhodes, Spedding, Gallup, Frissell, Keaggy, Henderson, Gamballe, E.Johnson, A.Lee, Ford, Gallagher, G.Moore, Albert, Freddie, BB, Buddy,Tbone, & R. Johnson

  • and Johny Winter

  • howabout Metheny too

  • not being funny but steve vai, satriani and johnson are aweful compared to this guy and i could i watched thier dvd and was bored out of my mind

  • This is the real G3 !

  • timechannel My G3 would be Danny Gatton, Lenny Breau, and Scotty Anderson. Then my next G3 would be Wes Montgomery, Johny Smith, Hank Garland, Jimmy Bryant, and Joe Maphis; I know thats 5. Interesting jams would be Lenny Breau and Django, Hendrix and Gatton, Scotty Anderson and Jimmy Bryant, Joe Maphis and Albert Lee, Johny WInter and Stevie Ray Vaughn, Wes Montgomery, and Johny Smith, Tal Farlowe and Joe Pass, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, Eric Johnson and Steve Morse,Kenny Burrell & P.Martino.
