when the rotten flesh turns your food meter green, it is because you get food poisoning. this will deplete your food bar faster than normal. if you are hit by a blue spider, you get poisoned. which is indicated by your hearts turning yellow. this will deplete your life fairly quickly but can't directly kill you.
