Looks like they are going to twist history, it was an Inuit hunter Roy Ahmaogak who found the whales and started the rescue using a chain saw to cut the ice. Soon others from the Inuit community came to help. The US state department asked the Soviet Union for help as they were the only ones with Ice breakers large and powerful enough for the job. It is not known if the whales survived once freed as they were in ill health and no radio transmitters were attached.
I love the wit of KTWBTKYdotCOM but the movie is sh_t propaganda for environmentalism, rather than the sheer decency of (most) human beings towards life in all its forms. Environmentalism sets all of nature against human life, and this movie tries to blend the wicked views of environmentalism as if it were the same thing as the above mentioned human decency. The message, as a result, is insane, but ppl will love it, whether they are human or environmentalist.

My people have been whaling for thousands of years 696trex. To this day the people in the arctic use whaling as substance to feed every family. It is not for no reason, it keeps some families from starving in some tough times. You think you know it all but I do know families who barely scrape by and they go without while the children gain nutrition from the land. Whale, caribou, whitefish feeding the mouths of babes. If you care about whales you have to see The Whale. Wonderful film. In theaters now. Ask in your own theater. Search youtube for The Whale official movie trailer. it was the best Ryan Reynolds film for 2011 but nobody knows about it because it's not a big studio.

I think its touching that there are still kind and caring people out there. Maybe the baby died, which is terrible, but the point is that people TRIED to save all 3.
