@obama8cousin actually wrong, it was supposed to go to sora cuz he has vent(guy from birth by sleeps)'s heart. so the keyblade went to him bcuz he had the most purest heart or something like that
Only partly correct. Riku was the original inheriter of the Keyblade, but he proved to be unworthy of it, because he allowed the darkness to take control of him. So while it IS correct that Riku should have had it, he was too weak to get it. Sora wasn't - in fact, he had a far more pure heart, and his strenght was greater than Riku because of his ability to make friends - Riku alone is stronger than Sora, but Sora isn't alone - That's pretty much the point in Kingdom Hearts 1.

riku was supposed to but in the beginning he gave into the darkness and the only person it could go to was sora
