  • I can not get enough of this video! Judy has a style that comes through here loud and clear. If there was a Man she was truly singing this too I know he is haunted by it for the rest of his life.Judy is truly living this song.At this point in her life she was Sassy and she knew how to use it.Even if the man got away Judy sang this song from what she was born with and from experience...Hauntingly very hauntingly....I love everything in this video the end the ash tray...... Barb R.I.P Judy..

  • Amazing. Thanks so much for posting this!

  • Lovely video post! Isn't she just gorgous here??

  • Judging by the echo effect, I'd suggest that they pre-recorded this track earlier in the evening, and Judy, in the confines of this very imaginative set, lip-synched to herself. I know that the show was taped on three evenings. You hear her in her best voice, singing the first two songs recorded, "Just in Time" and then "When you're Smiling" in front of the live audience. When singing the Man that... she sounds a bit rough, but I like her voice when she was at this weight. Go figure.

  • I understand that the video clip is from a special with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, but she appears to be lip syncing to her live recording from her album, "Judy at Carnegie Hall". This is one of the greatest tracks on one of the greatest albums of all time. If you only get one Judy Garland album, get this one. I recognize it because I have listened to this track at least 50 times.

  • @AppleMan1237 I believe she's lip-synching too, but it's not from the Carnegie Hall album, they both sound different. Judy did this on televsion numerous times during her CBS series, she'd pre-record songs in a studio and lip-synch to them during the live taping. Carnegie Hall will forever be one of the greatest albums of all time <3

  • her signature song

  • my two cents, its a known fact, that Ms Garland was taking (started at the studios, when she was younger sleeping pills to sleep, and uppers, and everyone drank in those days,)she felt abandoned and washed up,and with a few hubbies, and boyfriends,..hey its hard getting older, anyhoo, pill taking and the like..to excess is considered "a slow suicide",getting older isnt for sissies, lol as someone said, forget who..wait when you get older...

  • and she did that sitting down... Judy was a beast!!

  • Chills, She made me believe her every word..she was great and then every once in a while she was sooo great it was scary kind of crazy good! I felt mesmerized.

  • Wow, the singing, the expressions, the gestures, it's all a perfect package and makes for a truly superb performance!

  • This is my favorite song she had ever sung. This song just is her. Everytime I hear her sing...I am saddened by the hurt i feel and inspired by the talent she bestowed. RIP.

  • I think Judy Garland was murdured, why would she overdose on drugs :( i miss you judy

  • @MrStout93 Well, whatever caused her death, youtube is not the place to discuss it. So please just keep in mind that the comments placed by each video on my channel has to be about the performance or movie and it has to be in respectable terms. I accept discussions about some things, but I want it neat and clean and this subject is an easy target for lots of people to get nasty. Just a simple warning :-)

  • Good God the woman is amazing - thank you for posting this! Chills!

  • It is so heartening to read so many comments that appreciate the supreme and stunning artistry of Judy Garland and sympathize with her for her many undeserved misfortunes.

  • @gvt2u Well said. I'm reading a terrific bio of Judy called "Get Happy" I never knew the extent of her un-happiness thru much of her short life. She deserved better. A greater talent never existed on this planet. I love you Ms.Garland!

  • love this woman dearly. i was a fan at age 12, now going on 66. she sent me a beauriful 8 x 10 studio portrait, not a glossy...personally signed, not a stamp...had the pleasure of seeing her in person 4x...3 at the PALACE in NY and one of her last shows in NJ before she passed. God bless her...her life was not what it could have been.

  • Judy I wish you peace, and i hope you found it

  • Sheer perfection! It really doesn't get any better than this! Weep No More My Lady.....

  • I want to give her a hug :'(

  • This song is very haunting because when you think about it she is the Woman that got away.We miss you Judy I bet you never thought after 43 years that we would be still listening to you.Still loving you Judy Barb...

  • Judy Garlands music is so lovely and sincere. I love how you can feel her emotions by just looking at her hand gestures, and that voice, it expresses twice as much as the lyrics their singing. I agree, Judy was simply a work of golden art.

  • mpp Ya she is.When God send one every once in a while it shows what it s all about.Judy can do that to me when I was a kid and at 53 the tears are flowing because she hurts so damm good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When was this? Where did you get this photage?

  • @Tegnsprog As far as I know it's from "The Judy Garland Show", 1962. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were guests in that show.

  • @Reneedebruin To clarify it's from the Judy, Frank and Dean -Once in A Lifetime tv special. Not her actual CBS tv show. because I have this DVD and it was put out by Judy's husband Sid Luft several years ago in a colorized version.

  • @mocrg Well, thank you then for letting me know!!! :-)

  • amazing.

  • Spetacular.

  • Heard this for the first time ever tonight, WOW, goose bumps, head tingles and I have found a little more of my soul this night. Amazing, truly amazing, my words but cannot express how mind blowing she sings this song. Romance is not dead!!

I'm a breakdancer who loves this stuff!!!

  • Fabulous, what a star

  • he pain in her face.

  • Tony Bennett said, nobody sounded ever better than Judy Garland singing "The Man That Got Away" and everybody who listens to it would agree. Well, I do ;-)

  • cuts me into pieces, her voice is a lullaby, one of a kind for sure

  • STAR!!!!

  • who disliked this!!! are they stupid or something? this is amazing no one can top her! shes the best! she puts so much emotion in to it.

perfect, great, the best that ever lived!!

  • She's definitley one of a VERY FEW true 'STARS'.....she worked/earned her way to being a true STAR; from vaudeville to Hollywood and Broadway. Judy can't be compared to anyone...she's truly 'THE ONLY OF A KIND'

  • @quothi

Can't say too much about today's "so-called" stars . . .they want to have their cake and eat it too with their names up in lights and be noticed by everyone but they don't want to work and earn their way to get to the top. I admire those who WORK their way to the top. These days everyone wants to be a star but no one has the patience and the work ethics to continue doing what they do with diligence, hardwork, showing a love and passion for what they do until they reach their goals.

  • @MusicLoverBrian1 Yes, thanks to America Idol, X-Factor, etc every mediocre wannabe is made to believe that they, too can "make it"....The American Dream shoved in our faces. Really pathetic.

  • @eldiran2

It takes hard work to achieve "The American Dream" and I think that American Idol, X-Factor and other shows such as these are nothing but artificial substitutes to getting on the road to fame. Sometimes you have to pay your dues before you get on top and all of the great singers like Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Shirley Bassey (known to singing Goldfinger & Diamonds Are Forever for 007 films) paid their dues to get to on the top. Those have WORK HARD will have FRUITFUL careers.

  • In this version of 'The Man That Got Away', Judy is lip-syncing However, she doesn't just match perfect timing (which is an art in itself) with the lyrics, but being the intelligent performer she was, she puts theatricality into a production of the song. In fact, every song Judy sang has this and many other qualities to them. She interprets meaning, she doesn't just 'cover' songs, like most other singers do. Listening to Judy sing, I always feel emotionally affected by her.

  • I love performing to this song. . . everyone can relate to it!

  • This is so perfect I feel like I slowly die when I hear it.

  • Sultry, soulful, sexy and so missed.

  • @namakua Judy's sexiness rarely gets a mention. She's not sexy in an obvious way; Judy is sexy with a passion that is held aloofly back. It's a sexiness that creeps up on you because it is subtle yet effortlessly dynamic.

  • Just amazing,,,,,,,there are no singers like this anymore.

  • That is about as good as it gets.

  • I was there...

  • There isn't a person alive that can even come close to Judy Garland. I find it silly and embarrassing when a man tackles her songs. Has anyone noticed that whenever one of Judy's signature songs are sung, the other person is always trying to imitate her?..... I think it's impossible for any singer to put their own spin on any of Judy's songs. You can't improve on perfection or top the original which is why I wish people would stop. If I want to hear these songs I will let Judy sing them.

  • @NFitalianGuy I do have to say Frank Sinatra did a pretty fine version of this, but I agree - Judy's is head and shoulders above the rest, including this arrangement (first used in "A Star is Born", I believe).

  • @seacamtv Rufus Wainwright did a pretty good version but it just doesn't even compare to this.

  • Has anyone ever sung a song like that before or since? If so I've never heard it.

  • It's artists like this that can prove you don't have to be in a movie to be discovered. Her voice is so amazing, she wouldn't have even needed the Wizard of Oz to be discovered.

  • This is the greatest rendition of a song ever sung, and I love millions of songs. But no one could sing a song, and such a great song, as Judy.

  • Every once in a while, when you are listening to other artists you may say to yourself, "hey, this is as good as it gets" But, then you come back to Judy and you reallize, "this is the greatest artist ever." Thank you Judy. You are incomparable.

  • oh my goodness :o

  • *hi5 the 2 that didn't like this in the face*

  • She's not lip-synching in this clip.

  • An amazing thing about Judy Garland was that she told George Cukor that she didn't think she was any good! George Cukor couldn't believe it, and he tried to convince that she was fantastic.

  • What an incredible woman! She was an emotional basket case, but when she sang with that incomparable voice, she changed her emotion into something so overpowering that it brought a flood of tears to her audience. Her individual pain became universal pain.

  • @frank47hammer "Emotional basket case" eh? Mm, well that kind of sums up the treatment Judy received in her lifetime. There is a word that describes something sorely lacking in this world - whether comments are made to those living or dead - and that is respect. Have some respect for a human being who had her struggles but still managed to leave a legacy of incredible work.

  • On a Sunday the 22nd of June 1969, The World woke up to the News of Judy Garland's death. The news sent shock waves across the entire planet & for the 7 days the media paid homage to " A Great Lady who had the Ultimate Interview"! Judy, Your fans still mourn your passing. I have the comfort of knowing your spirit was embraced by GOD & that HE showed you HIS infinite peace & all that heaven has too offer you. U brought a lot of joy to me & I thank God for creating you. RIP on this 6/22/10

  • She breaks your heart with that voice.

  • I don't think I took a breath during this whole performance. Amazing! Somehow, I think I prefer this to the version from the film. I do have a question regarding the color-- was this colorized or did we somehow get a rare treasure filmed in color that has survived?

  • @TheSwingShift I've seen this before. This was a special that featured Frank and Dino. It's a bit before her show began, (about a year) and I think this special was kind of a test run for the show that followed. It's definitely colorized. This performance is riviting. She wasn't in her best voice, (she was a bit hoarse) but the emotion and character overrides any vocal problems she might have been having. Fantastic!

  • @weightfeather1 Judy here was not in her best voice and "a bit hoarse"? I don't think so. Firstly, she is miming this pre-recorded set-piece; secondly, the recording is echoey and rather 'tinny' for some reason, which has distorted her voice. Any "vocal problems" are due to the (relatively) archaic (probably low-budget) technology for the time of this particular recording. The fact that its emotional resonance is still felt today speaks for itself..

  • @TheSwingShift it was colorized. I like colorization...makes things new again

  • I think all of you are right. There will never be another Judy Garland.

  • what a song!! it;s all about feelings and judy garland will live on forever.

  • Judy Judy Judy...Happy Birthday

  • This woman was a genius -- a wounded, fragile genius but that seems to come with the territory. It takes a very strong person to project such vulnerability, but that's what made every note she ever sang ring so profoundly and heartbreakingly true. We lost her more than 40 years ago, but there has never been and there will never be anyone like Judy again.

  • one of the 2 greatest female torch songs in the history of the world

  • This song just gets to me and no one can sing it like Judy did. Bravo!

  • fantastic...never saw this version before! brilliant...

  • and certainly one of the greatest talents we will ever know

  • great opening camera angle...

  • Just stupendous. She feels every word... every syllable! How many of us has she helped heal a broken heart with her amazing performance. Judy, you're quite a gal!

  • The way Judy's voice echoes and sort of fades out a b it at 4:38 is ghostly. Extremely haunting.

  • @kinglear It was a very well produced show.

  • What current singer out there now can do this( not just the performance but the exuding of the emotion)...I think maybe Fantasia Barrino,Celine Dion??

  • She sings this song like she lived it,so much emotion nobody sings like that anymore. What a great talent

  • greatest singer ever?good in some areas> Pick up sinatra and darin and then decied

  • yeah the best ever. no doubt. what a voice.

  • "STAR IS BORN" When JUDY GARLAND is born, born one great STAR!!! This "The Man That Got Away" is FOR EVER your song.

  • "Star is Born" With JUDY GARLAND is born for ever, one Great STAR!!!

Nothing can sing this "The Man That Got Away", this song is JUDY GARLAND.

  • Nothing but the upmost respect for this woman...What a voice!

  • God, this is so great, it almost gives me a headache! The pipes, the pathos, she is something else.

  • i totally adore her x

  • There used to be a clip of her doing this song on YouTube. It was Black & White and she began singing the first part of the song behind a podium and walked out center stage in the middle. Does anyone know where there clip was from? It was a favorite of mine until it was removed from YouTube. It's my favorite clip of her doing thing song.

  • @lcowles the clip you're talking about is my favorite as well. It's from her weekly TV series, The Judy Garland Show. The episode is show 4 with Lena Horne and Terry Thomas. Her TV series is being re-released on DVD, so I would check amazon for the episode with Lena Horne. You can also get the out of print version off Ebay.

  • judy has one of the best voices of all time... liza has a great voice, but she is more of a preformer, judy will always be the prettier one (in her hay day) and the bigger singer, but liza is incredibly talented, and if i may dare to say, possibly a better actress then judy, but they are both stunning :) cant compare, and this clip is stunning

  • No need to badmouth Liza. She's a star in her own right. The two cannot be compared.

  • Judy is simply in another orbit. Her daughter Liza is pure shit in comparison.

  • @AdArmand That;'s mean - Liza is brilliant in her own way

  • Judy is an acquired taste like the worlds best wines.

  • And that Ladies and Genteman... is TALENT those red shoes will never be filled by no other ever again ...TIMELESS

  • She should of won the Oscar for A Star Is Born.

This song is soo captivating. && with Judy's inimitable voice, there is honestly nothing better.

    RIP Judy <3

  • Top that all you so called 'divas' of today.

  • I know the song is from A Star Is Born, but can someone tell me where this clip came from? Is it a concert or her television show. Thanks.

  • dear mrr8401, this came from "the judy garland show", a one time special that preceded her weekly series, and had dean martin and frank sinatra as guests.

  • High High Art

  • That was incredible. A true star in every way.

  • I have a great Idea! What don't we all chip in and get all these so called "Legends and super stars singers in one room and make them watch and Learn that THIS IS PURE TALENT! Maybe they can walk away knowing their craft

  • One composer Burton Lane said on her bio I think the A&E Bio channel said That she was so winning because she was True and it was Judy being Judy coming through the song.

  • the first few seconds I thought it was another drag queen... wow it is Judy... Love the song

  • Searing to the core and dark depths of the soul. Not just a true and great singer; there*s passionate acting in those lyrics, great emotion, a real lived life. These superficial and shallow *singers* (screamers) today are nothing; they did not EARN their fame like Judy did, and they don*t even know what real singing is.

  • she's so amazing

  • amazing.

  • a little worn but the vocals are awesome and its like part two of the original...after the man has got away.

  • Wow how great and depressing too! I'll have a martini and pop a percocet. Thanks for posting

  • Garland, Davis, Sinatra and Martin...GREATEST ENTERTAINERS EVER!!!!!!!! They made you FEEL it when they performed.

  • Dont forget Crawford. or Ball!

  • Great too, but different entertainers

  • Also--- Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, Ella, Mel Torme, Nat King Cole.

Sinatra, however stands head and shoulders above them all. I believe Frank is the only thing my father and I ever agreed on.

  • in my view, this is the greatest singer who ever lived.

  • I wholeheartedly agree.

  • God, she is so great it almost gives me a headache! The pipes, the pathos, she really is something else

  • @mpp141 couldn't agree with you more.

  • @mpp141 You could not be more right. This woman was absolutely, fantastically brilliant and there will never be anyone else like her Not only was she the greatest singer who ever lived, she was an incredible actress. We, your loyal and loving fans, will never forget you Judy!

  • @mpp141 I agree! Judy Garland's voice and her was of singing cannot be topped. Even her daughters when in the best fo voice, can't come close to the magical touch & Purity and intense singing their MotherJudy Garland possessed.

  • I have the movie that she sang this song in and man she is amazing, dynamic and gives me goose bumps. She gives blood and tears in all of her performances and no on can ever compare to her. Truly ONE of a kind. I agree with everyone a song only fit for Judy to sing.

  • We have people out there trying to sing this song, but no one can sing this like Judy. So dont bother this song was written for her and Judy only.

There is something about Judy singing this song that is Fabulous just Fabulous

  • Wow.

Cuts you right to the core.

  • I agree with you. We have people ou there trying to sing this song, but no one sings this like Judy because it was written for her.

  • What a wonderful breath of real music by a true artist!

  • What a voice. She makes me want to cry when i hear this.

She is singing about herself and what she went through. I think she loved Micky Rooney

  • What a voice!!!! no one could ever sing this but Judy.

  • what a voice!!! no one could ever sing this song like Judy no one at all

  • Fabulous, just fabulous, many thanx:)

  • It's not like I didn't know this song 40 years ago, but this is so incredible it still brings tears to my eyes. Judy Garland's talent was not only that she had an outstanding voice but she made the lyrics real, like she was singing about herself.

  • how people could even mention susan boyle in the same breath as judy is beyond me judy is a legend .susan is an ok singer nothing more although i did support i her in bggt

  • Yes! Thank you. I'm not saying that Susan Boyle can't sing but...Judy you just can't touch her. When Judy sang it was like she was singing with every fiber of her being.

  • I think it's because she's singing of her life in a way...you have to feel it yourself before you can make everyone else feel it.

  • Thank you SO much for post this clip!

  • Wow. What a great version and setting. Certain singers like Garland and Streisand aren't just singers. They're artists.

  • I very much agree!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A. Ma. Zing. Simply & always.

  • I highly doubt Any new singer or current singer could touch Garland. Judy sang a song it was her coming through and her being true. She took us all on the ride with her through the ballads and the up beat tunes we all love hearing her sing. Susan Boyle is a fraud. She didnt just come out of the wood work. No one with a voice like hers which is very good at 47 and always dreamed of being a singer just drops from the sky. It was a publicity stunt by simon cowle. compare her to judy is a sin

  • Took the words right from my mouth =) Judy was better than Susan Boyle at 12 years old, and when she WAS 47 she died. Susan Boyle, no matter how good or bad, could never catch up to Judy.

  • thank you!!! i'm so glad somebody said it!!!

  • I just love this.

  • She felt and meant every word of this song, this is by far one of my favorites!

  • Susan Boyle aint no Judy

  • I've been waiting a long time for a new singer comparable to Judy. I think it might be Susan Boyle.

  • ...no.

  • Yes....just no.

  • There is only one Judy

  • I love the surrealism of how this song is staged. I think I like this version better than the original.

  • Agreed. Out of all the versions I've heard, this one just takes the care. The band, her voice. Heck yeah!

  • CAKE. I'm always saying "care". lol.

  • I LOVE how the song begins with the high above shot--reminds me of the beginning of a contemporary music video. Wonderful, just wonderful!

  • Judy, you´re the best!

  • This one still makes me a little weepy..I just loved Judy and always will !

  • I know right? It's the look in her eyes. Judy was so wonderful when she sang this song.

  • This Woman was a Gift!

  • It's magical. Is it Nelson Riddle's band backing her up? Simply beautiful.

  • CBS should do a retro night and get rid of the reality shows. I would love to have Judy Introduced to a new generation!

  • i agree. run these shows and see what high ratings they get. she is dead but NEVER forgotten!!

  • this was from JUDY FRANK AND DEAN SEPT 26TH 1962 CBS' hight rated special. Lorna once said and has to be the only thing I agreed with her on is "this song is FORVER IDENTIFIED WITH MY MOTHER "

  • Hey, that's my b-day! :D

  • she sang like her life depended on it...WOW

  • What episode is this from?

  • DIVINE.

  • After watching other performances and versions, I must say I prefer this one. This band is wonderful and Judy's voice is just strong and passionate. I'm always listening to it on my mp3.

  • I have loved Judy Garland since my early youth when first seeing The Wizard of Oz...these few tv specials she made are indeed special...they ought to be shown again for the new generations to enjoy

  • Certain people are total originals. Judy was one of them, like Elvis, Barbra.

  • And Frank!

  • she aged beautifullllyy!

  • A beautiful soul!

  • This is beautiful. It brought me to tears just watching the performance. She just has a way about her. You go JUDY!

  • There will NEVER be another like HER!

  • She's the best!

  • Thats how you do it

  • colorized version of 1962 specila with Sinatra et all right>?

  • Wow!!

  • at the end of her life her agents had so much control of her life that she was even held liable after death. I read that contract and it was like they owned her soul.I was amazed that it was even considered legal. Once fields and Beigleman sign streisand they left Judy hanging. I hope those asses got what they deserved later on. Esp ames Aubrey from CBS who canceled the JGS in 1964.
