I would only hope that Islam would respect women and other people's beliefs but they don't otherwise very well-known people would not be exposing the religion as being oppressive to others who don't agree.

For instance, read 'Al-Bidayah-Wan-Nihayah' by Isma'il ibn Kathir as well as 'Muhammad in Mecca' and 'Muhammad in Medina', by William Montgomery Watt.
They are very resourceful and historical books and reading them is much better than seeing anti-Islamic internet propaganda nonsense.

If we read an early passage, for instance Surah al-Mumtahinah 60:8, we see that Islam encourages believers to treat non-Muslims, who do not fight us and do not drive us from our homes, with kindness and justice.
In his Tafsir, the Prophet's cousin, ibn Abbas, states that the Prophet applied this verse throughout his life, to peaceful non-Muslim tribes. Therefore that argument ends.

It's because priests, pastors and youth leaders are in a position of power over the children in their institutions, and they themselves are sexually guilt ridden by their own religion, a religion that vilifies normal sex and it's urges amongst anyone who is not married AND heterosexual.
