The creation of the Northern Ireland state was by no means democratic, and its administration under a Unionist-dominated governent was a n affront to democracy. Only two counties in Northern Ireland have clear Protestant majorities......Antrim and Down. And even at that I don't think the majority of people in South Down want to be British. Democracy is a strange thing when placed in the hands of Unionists.

Nally: From your post it sounds to me that your big problem seems to be with your Protestant/Unionist neighbours rather than with the UK in general. The Unionists haven't really held power for 40 years as it was direct rule and now power sharing so wheres the issue? What do you hope to achieve by unification? I suspect the South would have a heart attack at the thought of unification and I doubt they could afford it. Where would the southerners go for cheap shopping?!

As far as I'm concerned, the UK's role in the Northern Ireland dispute is all but over; it is the people of Northern Ireland who will dictate the future. And they are still quite reluctant to share power as recent European election results showed.

Well demographic trends would show that the Catholic population has grown much quicker than the Protestant population. And going by trends there will be parity in the two populations in the next 15 years or so. However, once the global recession ends it is possible that we could see a baby boom.....and if so, then the difference n growth rate of the Protestant and Catholic populations will be very clear.

My ambition for a United Ireland has many reasons. Firstly, Northern Ireland is a failed state. Never once has society functioned properly and never once has there been any lasting peace...not even now. The cultural identity of both Nationalists and ironically Unionists would be much safer in a united Ireland. Economically the Dublin-Belfast corridor, in which half the population of the entire island lives, has huge potential for industrialisation.

Hmm I think you're also guilty of only seeing "half the story". The creation of the Northern Ireland state was by no means democratic, and its administration under a Unionist-dominated governent was a n affront to democracy. Only two counties in Northern Ireland have clear Protestant majorities......Antrim and Down. And even at that I don't think the majority of people in South Down want to be British. Democracy is a strange thing when placed in the hands of Unionists.

Because that's exactly what Northern Ireland is......a state engraved into no particular traditional administrative area.....just thrown together for the convenience of the Unionists and after that anyone who dares speak out is 'undemocratic'. Nally: From your post it sounds to me that your big problem seems to be with your Protestant/Unionist neighbours rather than with the UK in general. The Unionists haven't really held power for 40 years as it was direct rule and now power sharing so wheres the issue? What do you hope to achieve by unification? I suspect the South would have a heart attack at the thought of unification and I doubt they could afford it. Where would the southerners go for cheap shopping?!

Of course it is, I have many problems with Unionism. As far as I'm concerned, the UK's role in the Northern Ireland dispute is all but over; it is the people of Northern Ireland who will dictate the future. I do not require any patronising history lesson...direct rule was laregly the result of Unionist determination not to share power with Nationalists....again an affront to democracy. And they are still quite reluctant to share power as recent European election results showed.

I did not mean to sound patronising. I was just making an observation. I agree with you that it is the people of Northern Ireland who will dictate the future so it looks like it'll remain in the UK. Personally I think border politics should be banned. A referendum on the issue should be held every 10 years or so and forgotten about the rest of the time.....though of course Nationalists boycotted the last referendum......

Well it looks like it'll remain in the UK until the Nationalist population outweighs the Unionist one, which will not be very long.
By belief is that border areas should be gradually handed over to the South. It is no great coincidence that most of the IRA's main areas of support outside Belfast were in the Nationalist border areas (South Armagh, South Down, extensive areas of Derry, Tyrone and Fermanagh; a bad mistake by those who drew up the statelet.

Of course it'll remain in the UK until people decide differently! I don't think that the nationalist population will ever be the majority but who knows! It is also no coincidence that many Unionists have moved away from the areas you listed as their lives were made unbearable but thats history and people should look to the future.For now, what is the point in tribal politics? Our politicians generally have PHD's on whether the border should stay or go but know little on any other subject.

Well demographic trends would show that the Catholic population has grown much quicker than the Protestant population. And going by trends there will be parity in the two populations in the next 15 years or so. However, once the global recession ends it is possible that we could see a baby boom.....and if so, then the difference n growth rate of the Protestant and Catholic populations will be very clear.

My ambition for a United Ireland has many reasons. Firstly, Northern Ireland is a failed state. Never once has society functioned properly and never once has there been any lasting peace...not even now. The cultural identity of both Nationalists and ironically Unionists would be much safer in a united Ireland. Economically the Dublin-Belfast corridor, in which half the population of the entire island lives, has huge potential for industrialisation.
