I used to listen to "The Fine Art Of Surfacing" before going out Saturday nights. Singing at the top of my lungs "On a night like this I deserve to get kissed at least once or twice...." Dreaming......
@puffies1 It was supposed to be a measured piece of sardonicity based on the fact that I, myself, think that Johnny Borrell is a third-rate Bob Geldof...in his vocal style and his delivery. xx Oh...and I'm 49
This is such a fantastic song, I love it more now than I did way back in 1979, because as you get older, you appreciate great music more. We were spoiled for great music at one time; now its all shit.
@ralucagymnast I would say from the end of the 90's until now, most music which is produced now is shite; I despise all this "X-Factor" manufactured rubbish which is so popular nowadays; its utterly abhorrent. Money, and the lust for it, has killed music, the same way as its killed the passion in football: its all about how much you've got now, so sad:(
@CyareMordmin It was supposed to be a measured piece of sardonicity based on the fact that I, myself, think that Johnny Borrell is a third-rate Bob Geldof...in his vocal style and his delivery. xx
I agree most of the music nowadays sucks, The 60's, 70's and the 80's produced lots of very original music, now most bands are producing there own covers of other artists work!
I agree most of the music nowadays sucks, The 60's, 70's and the 80's produced lots of very original music, now most band are producing there own covers of other artists work!
I saw the Rats in Leixlip Dublin in Feb 1980. My first ever gig and the ticket cost only £3. Great great band. loved their first 3 albums to bits...... fav song has to be Joeys on the street again....
I have an even better question, why did the keyboardist point off screen to a camera to the guitarist? Was it to mask his miming? What was that about :S
This is an amazing song! The man can't dance, but today all the singer's dance and the music sux! I wish there was music like this out today....but I guess that whole period has come and gone!
On a night like this I deserve to get kissed at least once or twice You come over to my place screaming blue murder, needing someplace to hide. Well, I wish you'd keep quiet, Imaginations run riot, In these paper-thin walls. And when the place comes ablaze with a thousand dropped names I don't know who to call. But I got a friend over there in the government block And he knows the situation and he's taking stock, I think I'll call him up now Put him on the spot, tonight.
As Britain has more surveillance and spy cameras than any other country and more laws then Perhaps gordon the moran brown and the labour party should adopt this song as their anthem.
Agreed. Excellent lyricist our Bob, this one being a prime example. Would strongly recommend people to google some Geldof lyrics, this, Diamond Smiles, Rat Trap, Looking After Number One, I Never Loved Eva Braun... some real classic writing there...
Sadly the meaning is completely lost on the young audience.
Hey Bob.. If you ever read this.. You can come back to Peterborough now.. They pulled the pea factory down and my bro's forgiven you for the go-cart !!
hehe bob's inability to mime convincingly always makes me laugh =] Great perfomance tho, very lively hehe love bob's hat and johnny's jacket thanks =]x
Fantastic stuff. (I suspect like others) I'd forgotten just how good they were.
I saw them in '84 at college. Not a big gig at all but they were awesome. 6 months later Mr G was doing bandaid and the rest (as they say) is history...
Man, it is so cool to see Boomtown Rats here. They were one of my absolute fave bands (along with Doug & the Slugs - Canucks are familiar with them) back in the early 80s.
Great lyrics. Still "relevant"....

First track from the fine art of surfacing. I can,t believe that the rats are thought so little of as they were top new wave. Still what do I know ?

@exproggo you are being facetious right ? I mean, how can a seventies' band copy a band formed in 2002? So i will presume you are being funny!

its delibirate. lots of bands rebeld to the fact that they had to lip sync on certain shows..so they had fun with it...made it look crap delibiratly.
