  • Great lyrics. Still "relevant"....

  • Sounds like The Move.

  • First track from the fine art of surfacing. I can,t believe that the rats are thought so little of as they were top new wave. Still what do I know ?

  • I used to listen to "The Fine Art Of Surfacing" before going out Saturday nights. Singing at the top of my lungs "On a night like this I deserve to get kissed at least once or twice...." Dreaming......

  • @noshouldersnohead this art of surfacing is all but dead.

  • @exproggo seriously how old are you??

  • genius bob

  • All Hail St.Bob and the Rats. Quality

  • I love this song, probally one of my favourites for sure :)

  • This is such a fantastic song, I love it more now than I did way back in 1979, because as you get older, you appreciate great music more. We were spoiled for great music at one time; now its all shit.

  • @ralucagymnast I would say from the end of the 90's until now, most music which is produced now is shite; I despise all this "X-Factor" manufactured rubbish which is so popular nowadays; its utterly abhorrent. Money, and the lust for it, has killed music, the same way as its killed the passion in football: its all about how much you've got now, so sad:(

  • God...you can tell they have been listening to Razorlight. The singer is copying Johnny Borrell's whole act...shameless!!!!

  • @exproggo you are being facetious right ? I mean, how can a seventies' band copy a band formed in 2002? So i will presume you are being funny!

  • @exproggo You be trollin!

  • @CyareMordmin It was supposed to be a measured piece of sardonicity based on the fact that I, myself, think that Johnny Borrell is a third-rate Bob Geldof...in his vocal style and his delivery. xx

  • I agree most of the music nowadays sucks, The 60's, 70's and the 80's produced lots of very original music, now most bands are producing there own covers of other artists work!

  • new wave at its best......

  • A great band - and Bob Geldof is a late BEATNIK,,,

  • saw them before they got well know at the NASHVILLE in Lillie road in London back in the 80's...

  • I saw the Rats in Leixlip Dublin in Feb 1980. My first ever gig and the ticket cost only £3. Great great band. loved their first 3 albums to bits...... fav song has to be Joeys on the street again....

  • whats with B.G.s OUTFIT was it

    "dress like Dr.Who" day ??

I love the BTR's they are me favourite band

  • Goodness tho...I just saw that hat in the "young mens" dept at our local department store.

  • I have an even better question, why did the keyboardist point off screen to a camera to the guitarist? Was it to mask his miming? What was that about :S

  • This is an amazing song! The man can't dance, but today all the singer's dance and the music sux! I wish there was music like this out today....but I guess that whole period has come and gone!

  • Too bad, eh? I love these guys and their music was fantastic - so glad we can get it on YT!

  • Yet another class performance from Geldof et al... =]

  • dont flatter yourself nobodys listening...classic

  • it makes me nervous...those things you say

  • A brilliant, brilliant band who really ought to be given the credit they deserve for some superb, original, witty tunes!

  • its delibirate. lots of bands rebeld to the fact that they had to lip sync on certain shows..so they had fun with it...made it look crap delibiratly.

  • 2:27 - 2:50 One of rock's funniest moments. Also the worst lip synch job ever. Geldof Smelsdof

  • wots happen 2 the sound????????????

  • Outstanding, take me back so it does.

  • right back at ya :}

  • dude i never hear of this band till i saw a 5$ dvd of them in a box. worth looking up :P

  • "And I wish you'd stop whispering - don't flatter yourself, nobody's listening" Maybe one of the greatest lyrics ever.

  • oh yes lets do say that lol x

  • BOB is a talented man shame he produced talentless children though.

  • when Bob was coolest - great track !

  • My personal favourite Boomtown song! Diamond smiles next, then I don't like Mondays!!

  • I liked the song "I dont like mondays" better,

  • Bob Geldof looks so young in this - where do the years go!!!!

  • Bob Gedolf is genius.

  • Barstards i luv this

  • As Britain has more surveillance and spy cameras than any other country and more laws then Perhaps gordon the moran brown and the labour party should adopt this song as their anthem.

  • I did suggest it to my local branch of NO2ID!

  • Reminds me of The Hold Steady

  • Yup, this is good, very good indeed.

They were a big band but they should have been huge.

  • Agreed. Excellent lyricist our Bob, this one being a prime example. Would strongly recommend people to google some Geldof lyrics, this, Diamond Smiles, Rat Trap, Looking After Number One, I Never Loved Eva Braun... some real classic writing there...

  • Great Song!

  • This is a very great song. I listen to it alot. have also played it with my band:)

But the people in the audience don't get it.

If this song was new today, it would be on top of the charts all over.

  • I feel your pain. ='(

  • I don't think so. Song is too great to be on the charts nowadays.

  • Rock and Roll Baby

  • reminds me of my rebelious teens oh happy days no worries no debt just beer women and the rats

  • best rats tune

  • ?! there where also other good ones

  • My Fave Boomtown Rats song.

Sadly the meaning is completely lost on the young audience.

Hey Bob.. If you ever read this.. You can come back to Peterborough now.. They pulled the pea factory down and my bro's forgiven you for the go-cart !!

    hehe

  • Bob and the Rats live on Cool

  • Brilliant song....my band "Loutish Lover" are supporting The Boomtown Rats at The Robin2 in Bilston, West Midlands on Wednesday 6th August.

  • This song is about my schizophrenia, lol

  • 1984!

  • Boomtown Rats! Woohoo! Party!

  • i love how the lead singer spins the mic round just 2 show every 1 that it wasnt live. =}

  • I like Bob's Porkpie Stetson.....wellard!!

  • were these punks 1:47 lol

  • ur a gay shit u prick

  • Its gayest, you ignorant, retarded, slack jawed, limp wristed, monkey shagger... gayest.

So next time you try and slag excellent music off, just beware or else you'll get another stiff talking to.

  • Im tooo old for this

  • I used to have this single back in the day, February 1980...

  • "And I wish you'd stop listening, don't flatter yourself, nobodies listening" has to be one of the greatest lyrics EVER.

  • Actually, it's "stop wispering" not listening

  • these dudes are at my house right now !! woop

  • ELSPETH+R " BRILLIANT SONG"!!!

  • Yeah!

  • Ha Ha Classic Countdown. Love those Rats. Saw them in Melbourne Australia in 1979. Sir Bob was a wild man that Night. Great Band

  • Countdown was produced in Melbourne..you probably saw them on this visit!

  • I live in melbourne and remember countdown well thankyou

  • you lucky bastard!!

  • why do those people in the front row look so bored??! I'd give anythin to see the Rats live!!

  • bring back the rats great time great songs and the 80s image how cool

  • Fantastic stuff. (I suspect like others) I'd forgotten just how good they were.

I saw them in '84 at college. Not a big gig at all but they were awesome. 6 months later Mr G was doing bandaid and the rest (as they say) is history...

  • love it

  • Whats to say, just sit back and enjoy!

  • I totally loved The Fine Art of Surfacing.

  • Surveilance cameras .... lookin at you

  • thieving pikey

  • Stop smoking the drapes.

  • Man, it is so cool to see Boomtown Rats here. They were one of my absolute fave bands (along with Doug & the Slugs - Canucks are familiar with them) back in the early 80s.

  • I love Johnnie Fingers's hat very sexey. Shame he isn't now tho
