In the movie,Lucius says that either the machine or he is not going to be aroun to help Batman and then batman says put your name in when he is done.In the ending Lucius puts his name in but hen the machine looks like it's violently shutting down or crashing.I still don't get.Did Lucius leave and destroy the sonar machine or destroy it to continue to work or enter his name and leave????Someone have the answer??
The first time I watched this movie I only understood parts of it.But after watching it again and again,I realized the story was pure genius and the music was kick ass.
This is such BS. Tell "We the People" the TRUTH and have faith in US, that we are rational and intelligent and strong enough to deal with it like grownups.
I can never watch this ending just once. I always replay it at least 2 more times, then I replay the whole movie lol. This movie was freakin EPIC!!!!!
I never understood Grodon's monologue. He describes Harvey as the hero Gotham needed but not the hero they deserved and Batman as the hero Gotham deserved but doesn't need.
The superficial meaning of Gordon's speech is that Harvey Dent was more than what Gotham deserved, but they still needed him so it was good they had him.
The deeper meaning is inverted, as becomes clear from Gordon's later comments: True, Dent, wasn't the Hero Gotham deserved. Gotham deserved better - they deserved Batman.
But while they deserved Batman, they needed Harvey Dent because they needed a legitimate, law-abiding, hero to set a good example.
Lucius believes the cell phone sonar tracking machine is a gross invasion of privacy, he says to Bruce he won't work at Wayne Enterprises as long as the machine is there. Bruce says when he's done; enter his name, which causes the machine to self-destruct. I.E. his faith is rewarded, like the narration says.
Alfred burns the letter because Rachel is dead, and it's a letter about how she will never be with Bruce, so it's really something that he shouldn't have to see.
@dissy1994 the letter was from rachel, lucius said he was leaving because of that thermal thingy but he thought it was invasion of privacy WHICH IT WAS, because if someone was talking on the cellphone he would be able to hear it on some big ass system.
i just noticed this, you know how in the end there is a silhouette of batman going into the light, its like a play on the Shumacher's films where batman ran away from the light and into the audience except Nolan flips the image
I figured it was kind of a symbol for the inversion of Batman's image. Schumacher wanted people to see Batman as the hero, and in the movies, Batman played the hero to the public. However, in this movie, Batman played the villain to the public, in turn becoming a hero that nobody else could be.
lol anyone else jizz at commissioners speech like ive watched this movie 8 times and eveytime i jump out of my seat at that last part BECUZ HE IS OUR SILENT GUARDIAN, OUR WATCHFUL PROTECTOR, THE DARK KNIGHT
I love this scene, especially the score of this scene and the whole film is amazing. Guilty pleasure that i listen to the OST whenever i feel like it!
Christian Bale's contract included three Batman movies. He has already finished his work on the third one. He also said that he will never do a Batman movie with Robin, because he finds him a useless, comical moron. He has also signed up for 3 Terminator movies as well. Also, the James Bond series will have another installment, with Daniel Craig.
Not only that, but I think to have a Robin in the film causes too much direction of the film. It's like to have Batman in one view and Bruce Wayne is just enough. I thought the 3rd Batman should be coming out on 2011. Because if you realize that in every Christopher Nolan/Batman films comes out like every 3 years. Look @ Batman Begins: 2005, The Dark Knight: 2008, and now the 3rd one: I CAN"T W8!!!
Definitly the best scene of the movie, the writing in Dark Knight is so good. Hopefully it continues with the third installment, I hope to god it's not Depp as Riddler. I would rather see Phillip S Hoffman as the Penguin but that's just me. NO ROBIN EITHER...Robin is retarted, Batman is better alone.
you too i love this movie it makes me all sad this is my favorite movie i lovve the die a jero or live to become a vilian sosad i need some tissue for my issues
Something tells me that Nolan's just pulling a fast one on us. Sure, they SAY the character is dead, but there is always the slight chance that he may come back as some sort of counter-balance to Batman.
Then again ... Nolan may have just gone ahead and killed him. Though I wish the psyche of Two Face was explored a little deeper. He's an interesting character for sure.
I most certainly agree, Twoface was only in about hailf the film, and it wont by pretty qucikly from that point on. I like the classic batman films more because the characters are so psychotic...even Batman is insane because of a lifelong obsession and mystery of the death of his parents...in Nolan's films it just seems as if hes a billionaire playboy
Whoooa, let's take a step back here. I adore Nolan's adaptations because it shows who Batman really is, and that is Bruce Wayne. Wayne isn't the billionaire playboy, that's just the facade he must put on to keep everyone off the trail. Wayne is something of a philanthropist vigilante.
Two Face was never really a bad guy. He was sort of the grey between Wayne and The Joker. If the Joker is Evil, and Batman is good, then Two Face is neutral. With the small amount of time Nolan gave him ...
... it was made perfectly clear who Two Face was.
As for Batman's obsession with his parents? Their killer is dead, and Batman can only exist because his parents are dead. Who would Bruce Wayne be had his parents just given the criminal the things he wanted, and survived? Would there still be a Batman? Would Bruce be the thoughtful, philanthropic billionaire he'd be today?
What kind of city would Gotham be? You have to understand that, no matter what, his parents' death is the key to his ...
... existence. Sure, Wayne may have taken his obsession too far by dressing up and playing vigilante. But through his departure into this character he's created for himself, we are stuck with the memory of what happened to his parents. Batman is the direct result of that.
Nolan's films are really the only ones that really answer the question of who Bruce Wayne really is. Now, as for Two Face ... we got the jist of who he is ... but I just wish they'd have gone more into his moral ambiguity.
Twoface didn't have a very serious role though and he should have, he was the Joker's little puppet in the Dark Knight which was disappointing, his character is more dynamic and should have been more than what it was. The Joker should have died, and Twoface should be the villain in the 3rd film and introduce a new villian in the end, there's always two villains in the films.
Killing the Joker would have been a huge mistake. The Joker plays a bigger and bigger role through out the ... uh ... career(?) of Batman. In the pantheon of Batman villains, killing the Joker really is an awful idea. Not to mention, a proponent of this film was keeping the Joker alive.
Two Face should have stayed alive, yes, but to kill the Joker would have been a colossal mistake.
that was probably the filmmaker's intent before Heath Ledger's untimely death. However, they may recast the part with another actor (preferably Johnny Depp).
@KiernanMooney I'm glad the joker didn't die, but I think that Two-Face survived, because if an old man( Maroni ) survived a higher fall onto concrete, then Two-Face definitely could have survived falling onto dirt from a lower height. My opinion of course.
they might delve deeper into it in the sequel. This movie DEMANDS a sequel (Christian Bale, Michael Caine & Morgan Freeman are signed on for 3 movies). Like "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," this movie LEAVES YOU BEGGING FOR MORE.
they may bring him back, since Heath hadn't died when filming completed (he died shortly afterwards), so Two-Face MAY STILL BE ALIVE. Of course, that's up to the director and screenwriter. Personally, I think they should kill the Joker off screen instead of having a different actor portray him, as no one (ecept maybe either Johnny Depp or Anthony Hopkins, with some fancy computer work to make him look younger) could ever equal Ledger's performance.
i dont think Fox quit Wayne Eterprises. he said he was going to because Batman built the sonar machine which spies on the entire city. giving Foxc the power to spy on them while trying to locate The Joker would be unethical and wrong, kinda making him the "Big Brother" of Gotham. but since it was destroyed at the end of the movie, i think Fox is going to stay. hope this helps.
I don't even know if I can describe what I felt when I saw this moment in the theaters. The awesomeness was just so overwhelming... I'm watching the movie again right now.
When I saw this at the theaters, the last seconds of the movie, where he drives off into a bright street light = amazing. Spectacular camera shot and lighting, added with that narration, makes an amazing ending.
that part nearly made me in tears. its a shame how people dont realise how much u do for them, and they dont recongise, you do for good, but not being recongised. best movie ever made.
there is going to be at least another sequel. its already been confirmed. lucias fox only destroyed to sonar machine. the bat signal was never that significant in these movies anyway. he always found things for himself. and every hero goes through the bad reputation phase.
So what will become of Batman in the following sequils? If Batman is considered a criminal, instead of a hero to Gothem City Police as much as Gothem City's super criminals, then what will become of all Gothem City?
i dont think there's going to be any sequils. i mean, after lucas fox destroyed all the database and after they broke the bat signal. i think this miight be the end of batman.
Jenny... what movie did you watch? Fox destroys the sonar machine. And yes, the break the signal but remember the dialogue: "They'll hunt you. -You'll hunt me" It's a declaration of two partners. Batman has a low rep phase in comics as almost every other super hero does. But his partnership with Gordon is stronger than ever. The problem with a sequel is to find a script that is better than the last one. Caine, Bale and Nolan had all signed a 3 Batman movies contract
Hans Zimmer is a musical genius, one of the best, if not the best, score composers of all time. There's just so much feeling in his work.... I'm really glad he took in Steve Jablonsky as his understudy too :-)
No more Joker without Heath Ledger (in THIS continuity, of course).
I think a good storyline for a third film would be Catwoman starting her own crusade against crime to replace Batman, since she knows Batman's innocent of Two-Face's crimes, and eventually the two have to team up and go up against a new villain, like the Riddler or Clayface. And maybe in the process, Catwoman manages to prove Batman's innocence.
A good title for that might be "Shadow of the Bat".
Consider this...in "Batman Begins", to clear Wayne Manor of guests, Bruce uses the phrase, "...two-faced sycophants...", and Two-Face is the villian in the next movie. In "The Dark Knight", Lucius Fox tells Bruce that the new Bat-suit will protect him against "...cats...". Coincidence....? I do like your "Shadow of the Bat" title idea.
Oh, and seriously, I'm the cop standing next to Gordon when the Bat-signal is smashed! What a great day that was...!!!
Man, that's the exact same title I was thinking ... go with the titles from the comics, and this one would especially work considering that Gotham's status quo has changed after TDK ... effectively living in Batman's shadow.
They released a "bonus soundtrack" a month or two ago that has the actual song on it. You can buy it on iTunes - the album is "The Dark Knight Collectors Edition", and the song is "A Watchful Guardian".
I'd wouldn't join that mob, because, it's NOT the best film this year. I mean, geez, how many films have people seen this year to say that that this is the 'best'.
@chopster29 If you understood the ending you would probably be satisfied.I didn'yt understand it the first few times either.I listened to what the characters were saying and then I understood how genius it was.
This film WAS great. It had an actual message, and its a fricken super hero movie. Try pulling that off! But yeah, its not best film of the year worthy. Well it is for me cuz I'm such a big Batman fan and I haven't seen too many other movies.... Anyway, back to my point, this movie WAS GREAT!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Plenty of films have messages. The problem with this film is that the narrative is in need of several re-drafts from aspiring to be a giant moral setpiece. The films wants to have a moral high ground and be a psychology essay, which it's NOT.
The film works better as an epic, which the cinematography and the direction does impeccably. For me, this film does not 'hit' me as much as it meant to, which is a problem. Plus it's overlong, Batman is sidelined and the film has flaws. Good, not great.
I don't think the film aspires to have any moral set pieces, even if they tackle contemporary issues. It addresses contemporary issues as a way to show how Batman would function in our real world, but I didn't leave the theater angry at our NSA.
In terms of it being a psychological essay, I mean, yeah the boat people weren't overtly having a discussion on deontological ethics, but I think it all tied in well to society's, and ultimately Dent's, reaction to a force like The Joker.
you know something....to me this is the coolest part in the whole movie...i mean when i heard him say...."The dark knight" i was like YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!
they are blaming murders that harvey committed on Batman so that all the work that Harvey did won't be undone, which as they said would demoralize Gotham.
Nice to see I got what I was looking for instead of a dumb song Xd That joke got old SO long ago it's sad by now. Anyway, no words to describe this movie, this final sequence. It only makes me sad cause I know it will be a long time before I see something as amazing as this again.
I love the ending..so powerful and epic. Leaves you speechless and wanting more. The Dark Knight...brilliant. Thank you for posting this unforgettable scene!

Just a suggestion, though.
Visonu 3 years ago 6
Consider this...in "Batman Begins", to clear Wayne Manor of guests, Bruce uses the phrase, "...two-faced sycophants...", and Two-Face is the villian in the next movie. In "The Dark Knight", Lucius Fox tells Bruce that the new Bat-suit will protect him against "...cats...". Coincidence....? I do like your "Shadow of the Bat" title idea.
Oh, and seriously, I'm the cop standing next to Gordon when the Bat-signal is smashed! What a great day that was...!!!
rbobinsky 3 years ago 2
Man, that's the exact same title I was thinking ... go with the titles from the comics, and this one would especially work considering that Gotham's status quo has changed after TDK ... effectively living in Batman's shadow.

anywhere i could find this song? its like a mix of a bunch of the ones from the soundtrack
PatomBomb 3 years ago
They released a "bonus soundtrack" a month or two ago that has the actual song on it. You can buy it on iTunes - the album is "The Dark Knight Collectors Edition", and the song is "A Watchful Guardian".
GhodaLadki 3 years ago
alright thanks!

And Johnny Depp as The Joker.

hattu99 3 years ago
I've had enough of The Joker, but I would love to see Johnny play The Riddler.
CheekyAssassin 3 years ago 2
The Joker dies with Heath :)

I don't know I think Depp would make a good Penguin.
Ryokosha 3 years ago
No, Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin would be a good fit.

bloatiespizzahut 3 years ago
Apparently Eddie Murphey'll be playing the riddler..I hope not, blech.
Spezzuh 3 years ago
As much as I like Eddie Murphy, I hope not either. He's just not someone I can see as The Riddler. At all.
NeroMaddox 3 years ago 2
very random rumor, the writer for the dark knight said that Eddie Murphy has not been contacted for any such role for the next batman flick

A domestic 500 mil screams for a sequel. No worries, there. WB won't let that number go unnoticed. The trick is to get Chris Nolan to helm it again.

What is the song playing in this?!?!?!
BlackFlagLove88 3 years ago
It's kindof a mixture of 4 different songs from the soundtrack:
A Dark Knight
Aggressive Expansion
Introduce A Little Anarchy
Im Not A Hero
GhodaLadki 3 years ago
It's actually a bonus track out there titled "A Watchful Guardian."

There is gonna be a mob if this move doesnt win Best Picture, and Best Supporting-Actor
Hell, id join that mob!
Turner4590 3 years ago
I'll join it, too! I bet I could find some friends that'd come with me... >:-)
GhodaLadki 3 years ago
I'd wouldn't join that mob, because, it's NOT the best film this year. I mean, geez, how many films have people seen this year to say that that this is the 'best'.
The film is good, but not great.
os99 3 years ago
Well, what do you think should win best picture then. (btw. "i'd wouldn't?")
Turner4590 3 years ago
Well the best film this year is Of Time and the City. The one to win best picture would be The Wrestler.

I'd have to say that Happy-Go-Lucky was the best of 2008. The Dark Knight is most certainly up there, though.

Good, not great.
os99 3 years ago
Okay, fair enough.
ick13 3 years ago
I don't think the film aspires to have any moral set pieces, even if they tackle contemporary issues. It addresses contemporary issues as a way to show how Batman would function in our real world, but I didn't leave the theater angry at our NSA.
In terms of it being a psychological essay, I mean, yeah the boat people weren't overtly having a discussion on deontological ethics, but I think it all tied in well to society's, and ultimately Dent's, reaction to a force like The Joker.

i am confused about the ending can someone tell me what happened and why batman is now hated ?
Hayabusad63 3 years ago
they are blaming murders that harvey committed on Batman so that all the work that Harvey did won't be undone, which as they said would demoralize Gotham.
