Until quite recently, there were 30 RN escorts, now just 19. Hopefully they will really build the new frigate in bigger numbers, to join the 45s. 20 bew frigates would be good.

The frigates are designed around anti-sub warfare/convoy protection and the cost per ship is alot less, the type 23 cost £230M per ship compared to the type 45 which cost £1BN. The Type 45 are designed to be the main escorts for the new carriers and the main goal is to protect shipping from air attack.

@bingofioul If it were in the RN it would be a destroyer most likely, the size is simlar to the type 45, its main mission is to defend from air attack also. Each navy sees a Frigate/Destroyer differently, in the USN a Frigate use to be a ship that in the RN would be classed as a cruiser. Both the type 45/Horizon share the same anti-air missiles (Aster), the Horizon class has a more multirole approach though, carrying anti-ship missiles as well.

A destroyer is heavier and is primarily for A/S or A/W in Carrier Battle groups. Both are used on things like DRP/anti smuggling patrols.
