The last seat if the plane is always the quietest unless of course you are flying in a plane with tail mounted engines such as the MD-80, DC-9, 727, MD-11 , DC-10, etc... The front is always the loudest and the most dangerous. XD

why is it that the cover for the windows needed to be opened during landing?

so that if the plane crashes, light can come in through the windows. So when smoke fills the cabin, people don't only have to rely on the lights.
