I love how Silent Hill gives off this hellish world that I just don't ever want to leave. I also love how Resident Evil, the earlier ones, are really hard. Both put me on edge.
I like both games but to me RE will always stimulate my senses more than SH. I'll admit SH is alot more freighting on a psychological level, RE is really more of an external fear like "should I kill this zombie or save my bullets or should I use my last ink ribbon" but I grew up playin RE so I will always choose it over any SH. But hands down both parties bring exceptional game experiences!
@ieatwhitepussy Shame that psychological experience in SH was reduced to boredom, lately. That fear you've mentioned in RE changed into "Kill'em all!!!"
@Andriej69 I know what u mean but i was referring the classic RE. RE4 and 5 were great games but they didn't satisfy me in the aspect of fear. SH on the other hand has some what maintained that thrill but I do agree with u

@cjjtheone Well, looks like Capcom is the only one who actually evolves its most famous franchise, and always knows how to do it properly. Two newer AitD games and SH 4 and 5 are perfect examples of going downhill...
Well SH is probably scarier but I think RE is more fun to play and has more interesting characters and enemies. Though pyramid head is cool. lol Oh and I don't like how pretty much none of the SH games are related other than taking place in the same town. Change it up a bit!
@PheonixE49 I think that I (and most of the fans) prefer different stories and characters each time, instead of putting the same characters again and again, especially if they're just as deep and human-like as trained parrots.
@Andriej69 Well depends on who you talk to but I get what your saying. I prefer RE not because of the story but the gameplay. As far as characters go the only one that really interested me was wesker. As of late though both the series have kinda got off track. SH homecoming kinda sucked and RE5 was about as scary as a 2 weeks old kitten. lol I do enjoy both series though.
@PheonixE49 You got that right. Homecoming was so ridiculously bad, that my pad refused to work while playing it ;) RE 5 wasn't scary, but was damn fun, and technically flawless. We'll see if the Downpour can restore the old glory... RE was always about action and I wouldn't say it got off track, it just evolved, and in good direction it appears.
@Andriej69 Agreed, downpour looks promising and i would like an RE that's action oriented but extremely creepy and builds some tension. RE4 did an alright job at this but just add some more scare tactics. Oh and yes RE5 is a extremely fun game. Played it for the thousandth time yesterday. lol
@PheonixE49 RE5 it's not on my hard drive right now, but maybe I'll get back to it sometime, gave up halfway through the game because of the shitness of Pro difficulty. I dunno. I've beaten RE4 on PC on Pro with my keyboard, RE5 is just impossible, even with mouse and keyboard(I'm rather good at FPS). I'm busy lately and don't have much time to play games, anyway.
@Random97Fran RE and better story line?! Pointless dialogs, cliche characters, cliche plot, compared to interesting and frightening stories, deep characters with some dark secrets on their conscience from SH (especially the SH2). Story in RE is pretty much from a random C-class horror-action movie's, just a excuse for wasting zombies and other mutants. Are you trying to tell any of the RE characters (except for Wesker) has any sign of personality?
RE all the way I mean Sh is good with pyramid head and all but come on Tyrant Nemesis, Wesker and more theirs no one that can take there places in a horror game lovers heart <3
both are remarkable games but i <3 RE 4evea but SH has tht terror/horror thing tht makes you have hellish nightmares so thts a plus! Silent Hill 2 is my favourite game of all time, because of the story, characters, atmosphere and that indescribable "something" you've mentioned, just like Vampire:Bloodlines, Deus Ex, both old Fallout's and very few others, no RE game is on that list.You've just showed that only fanboy here is You.

@Emblemz If you say so, but still your comment was a bit harsh, I've played all RE games that came out on PC(plus emulators) I kinda like most of the characters(although they've no personality, maybe except Wesker :) but I don't dress up like Chris Redfield or something like that. I'm not a "huge" fan either, but I just like playing Resident Evil games. Maybe they are a bit overrated, but RE was precursor, without it there would be no Silent Hill, so let's say it's from sentiment ;D

SH3 was one of the first SH games i played (unfortunetally i got scared and didnt turn on my PS2 the rest of the time we had it rented XD) then after about a year we got a Resident Evil game (RE4) and Dr. Salvador kept killing me. -_- Very uncool lol But Silent Hill ALWAYS WINS FOR ONE REASON:

@Andriej69 new silent hill games suck ur totally right but i think res 5 has nothing to do with horror anymore its more a straiht forward coop shooter without interesting story or characters but for res fans its a better time then for silent hill fans (they shouldnt have continued the series since the 2 part anyway...)
@hausmeister64 RE 4 and 5 are exactly the same, 5 is even more arcade, cuz on PC they've even allowed mouse control, (I heard so) but they're still great! SH 3 wasn't that bad, but still no match for the SH 2 (best game of all time for me) and it's outstanding prequel, original Silent Hill. The next parts are silence... So at this point, you're right
RE charicters seem shallow, but SH charicters seem too DEEP... Like depths of Hell deep. But both be awesome games and I have collected both series and have played the living hell out of both. I can kill Nemisis with a knife and know to avoid the big P Head early on. So on, so forth... I can't say that any of them are better than the other b/c they both do what they set out to do... Puzzle-Action-Horror things.
I think both series are good, but I believe it's the creatures, characters, and stories that make them games as badass as they are. I think that would be cool if they made a figting game where you could use those characters and you could even pit Nemesis against Pyramid Head.

Losing the radio didn't make a difference to me, the static noise it pissed me off so I always turned it off anyways.
@DEARBLOOD i think that, i know alot about both SH and RE, everything past RE4 SUCKED. for some reason, all the older PS1 games seemed more....scary. some PS2 games are freaky, too. i always go for silent hill, but capcom messed up re with turning it into some....action..first person shooter thing. so i go for both, but yah, silent hill takes the cake! :D
i play the old resident evil and the remake and 0 becaude the new gameplay of the re 4 and 5 is just shit . the only sh tha i play was the 2 and is a good game . somebody tell that it was scary but is not scary is a litle but nothing more . play re 2 and the re uc the dark side chronikes xd
Silent hill is scarier as a game and as good storyline but overall just prefer RE because of its characters and story Although RE 5 and RE 4 like u said arn't scary at all they still great games but I'd like RE to have more scares. Resident evil has never been scary, tense is what it has been and will be. All the zombies, Ganados, and Majini(RE5) attacking you makes tension build. Silent Hill is scary, the nurses coming at you make you shit your pants and even though I am a bigger resident evil fan, I do have to say silent hill has a much better story. they both have their strong points but in the end neither is better its just whether or not you want to be overwhelmed or just shit your pants.
RE will always beat Silent Hill. Silent Hill got off to a good start with 1&2 but went down hill after that really. RE was the first well known survival horror game and there hasn't been any from 0 - 5 thats hasn't ben a great game

SH has an outstanding suspenseful and emotional soundtrack behind it, RE has dumb, cinematic thriller sounds
RE (excluding 4 & 5) has abysmal gameplay (melee and projectile weapon-wise) and an awful camera, SH is much better and more fun and has a camera that lets you see whats ahead rather than dividing a room into 3/4 different rendering areas
SH -- 1-2 second loading times, RE-- up to 6 seconds due to annoying door opening animations
SH -- confusing, cunning story, RE -- dumb down zombie making company is all you need to know
Lets face it, Silent Hill owns Resident Evil as a survival horror game franchise (excluding SH Origins, SH5, RE4 and RE5!!!). Anyone saying otherwise either hasn't played Silent Hill before or is just too stupid to understand the story and has no imagination whatsoever.
sorry man but I dont even consider Dead Space as a horror game at all (as odd as that may sound) as its another one of thise action games hiding under the "horror" genre tag. Sure its an amazing game, but I just find it about as scary as Doom 3, so Im afraid Im going to disagree with you on this, man
Okay, but DS has much more tense atmosphere and suspence(until somethin' jumps out on you) from beginning to the end, and of course better plot and characters than Doom 3 which was an ordinary shooter, horror suspence have ended along with second level. Besides, if You think this way RE4 and RE5 aren't horror at all, cuz I didn't find them(RE4 only actually, for now) scary even a bit...
Doom 3 definitely wasn't an average shooter as you call it, as the Doom series is one of the "grandfathers" of FPS gaming as it was the most revolutionary franchise at the time and probably still is. Doom 3 simply once again shows off the talent of John Carmack's programming skills and adaptability from pre-last gen programming languages to today's improved technology and built what was (at the time) the best looking FPS engine...(see next comment for continuation)
It was in 2002 when the Doom 3 demo was shown at E3 for which it won tons of awards for technical excellence. The Unreal engine, at the time, was complete and utter shit. It took ages for ID to make the game and to think of the concept for the story and so on, but it took even longer to convert it to the Xbox and the PC (thanks to Vicarious Visions). Doom 3 though, had atmosphere, was extremely fun and is one of the best looking games at the time...(see next comment)
You say that its an average shooter. How many shooters at the time Doom 3 was out, excluding Quake, gave you the ability to shoot the crap out of demons and other hellish creatures? Besides Painkiller, the answer is there really aren't any, and still while Painkiller was quite better than Doom 3 in the gameplay department, it cannot match the graphics or the atmosphere that Doom 3 offered. Doom 3 is anything but an average shooter, as games like DS were obviously inspired by it.
You really are quite talkative, aren't you? XD You're right mostly, but Doom's gameplay and mechanisms weren't revolutionary or even a bit different than a standard shooter, Doom 3 could've used something fresh, new and crazy, somethin' what Prey had(imagine something like coming back from the dead like in Prey adapted to Doom3, that would be awesome). Anyway, Doom 3 is still great game to play, especially with advanced mods, as a fan you should really try some of them...
To be honest, Penumbra isn't my type of game, Condemned was awesome, and Clive Barker's Undying, yeah, the most crazy horror shooter I've ever played!
heh thank you man, and sorry bout that, but I mean in terms of actual 'horror' and being terrifying, Fatal Frame is number one. I cant forget the first time I played it, I was so scared after fighting the first ghost in FF2, i took the game out and didn't play it for a week, couldnt sleep for two bloody weeks (thanks to my imagination making it even worse)!!! I never ever had sorta feeling that with any RE or SH games, i can play them from start to finish day after day, so sorry bout tht
Because some folks simply can't understand the plot. Not everyone can read Lovecraft or King and like their books, SH is very similar, especially to King.

im a huge resident evil fan i love it cause it's like fantasy and folklore based in modern times like how lord of the rings is fantasy and folklore based in times long ago, as for pure horror i would have to say Silent Hill is much more scary than and RE, because it doesn't really ever make sense or have a solid story like RE, silent hill is more like insanity and twisted inner struggles and it's all in ur mind, while RE is all about the horror in the world around u :) thats how i see it
You're right, if you overlook the SH4,still the worst part of the series (including Homecoming) and shitty game at all, all the things that you mentioned are missing in it...
Resident Evil has better games that are still being made by the original team and all the main series games had mini games which are fun to play however Silent Hill did have a better movie so my decision is Resident Evil because there's much more I like about that than it's main competition.
the first one that i played was re and when i played it again and again it just didn't scare anymore and in fact the longer i played it the more ways i find it to be funny unlike in sh there are still parts in the game that i feel creeped out as if though fear is slowly growing and i like it that way so three cheers for sh.
2 of them are great , but it is funnier to play residet evil ... and youll agree with me if u have played re4.. the master piece of all the survival horror
Silent Hill wins for sure. It has better music, better character design, better and more original creatures/monsters/demons. It also deals with true human emotion. I can't wait for both RE5 and SH5 but Silent Hill is just too amazing to compair to RE.
Just finished RE 1 and I gotta say from what I c of Silent Hill from playing 4 and watching videos RE 1 has a WAY better story and makes you think your ASS off without a guide I mean reading everything at once (from my files) after beating the game it was put together VERY nicely with twists turns and just plain frightning moments with very creepy camera angles and scenery anyway maybe SH 4 is a bad game 2 start with but RE vs SH 4 RE wins and plz everybody THIS IS MY OPINION
first game made as a survival horror was alone in the dark, then was resident evil and silent hill, AITD and RE are the same but SH is something else, that's why i like SH more
RE is more physical action, but SH is more psychological horror. Is like chosing either hamburgers or french fries. You just got to get the whole combo, man!
They are both good but SH has alot of different monsters and the story is usualy a lil more drawing..not as boring in some case of RE where u just keep killing zombies
im a big fan of horror games, I have all silent hill and resident evil games. I find Silent hill is scaryier and freakier and has more twists and weird stuff going on. But resident evil has better controlls. I like Silent Hill a bit better, more because I get freaked out a lot more.
I've always thought of SH like Hellraiser, where it is what your mind makes it. RE is reality (I guess). I always enjoyed the fact that each character in the SH series may already be dead, and it'd their hell.

but resident evil has better storyline, characters and soundtracks
even though im still a kid i played them both and resident evil rocks
you have to admit that silent hill s storyline is a bit confusing
resident evil is simple and cooler
plus the resident evil creatures are a lot stronger than silent hill s
nemesis would sure beat pyramid head
lickers and hunters would sure beat the creatures and small bosses of silent hill

1) Silent Hill has a WAY better soundtrack than ANY Resident Evil game.
2) Pyramid Head is just a figment of James' imagination, and is therefore unkillable and so would beat Nemesis into the ground.

SH 3 wasn't that bad, but still no match for the SH 2 (best game of all time for me) and it's outstanding prequel, original Silent Hill. The next parts are silence... So at this point, you're right

RE charicters seem shallow, but SH charicters seem too DEEP... Like depths of Hell deep. But both be awesome games and I have collected both series and have played the living hell out of both. I can kill Nemisis with a knife and know to avoid the big P Head early on. So on, so forth... I can't say that any of them are better than the other b/c they both do what they set out to do... Puzzle-Action-Horror things.

I think both series are good, but I believe it's the creatures, characters, and stories that make them games as badass as they are. I think that would be cool if they made a figting game where you could use those characters and you could even pit Nemesis against Pyramid Head.

yeah but at least Silent Hill makes sense in making you drop some weapons, instead of making you choose between keeping a shotgun and some shells to waste some local zombies or take the needed item, your crappy pistol and rush past the mofos.
Losing the radio didn't make a difference to me, the static noise it pissed me off so I always turned it off anyways.

@DEARBLOOD i think that, i know alot about both SH and RE, everything past RE4 SUCKED. for some reason, all the older PS1 games seemed more....scary. some PS2 games are freaky, too. i always go for silent hill, but capcom messed up re with turning it into some....action..first person shooter thing. so i go for both, but yah, silent hill takes the cake! :D

About RE, I only like the Story (my favorite character is Wesker).

Resident evil has never been scary, tense is what it has been and will be. All the zombies, Ganados, and Majini(RE5) attacking you makes tension build. Silent Hill is scary, the nurses coming at you make you shit your pants and even though I am a bigger resident evil fan, I do have to say silent hill has a much better story. they both have their strong points but in the end neither is better its just whether or not you want to be overwhelmed or just shit your pants.

RE will always beat Silent Hill. Silent Hill got off to a good start with 1&2 but went down hill after that really. RE was the first well known survival horror game and there hasn't been any from 0 - 5 thats hasn't ben a great game

RE vs SH
SH has atmosphere, RE has "boo!"-scares
RE makes you drop items, Silent Hill doesn't
SH has an outstanding suspenseful and emotional soundtrack behind it, RE has dumb, cinematic thriller sounds
RE (excluding 4 & 5) has abysmal gameplay (melee and projectile weapon-wise) and an awful camera, SH is much better and more fun and has a camera that lets you see whats ahead rather than dividing a room into 3/4 different rendering areas

Lets face it, Silent Hill owns Resident Evil as a survival horror game franchise (excluding SH Origins, SH5, RE4 and RE5!!!). Anyone saying otherwise either hasn't played Silent Hill before or is just too stupid to understand the story and has no imagination whatsoever.

Okay, but DS has much more tense atmosphere and suspence(until somethin' jumps out on you) from beginning to the end, and of course better plot and characters than Doom 3 which was an ordinary shooter, horror suspence have ended along with second level. Besides, if You think this way RE4 and RE5 aren't horror at all, cuz I didn't find them(RE4 only actually, for now) scary even a bit...

Doom 3 definitely wasn't an average shooter as you call it, as the Doom series is one of the "grandfathers" of FPS gaming as it was the most revolutionary franchise at the time and probably still is. Doom 3 simply once again shows off the talent of John Carmack's programming skills and adaptability from pre-last gen programming languages to today's improved technology and built what was (at the time) the best looking FPS engine...(see next comment for continuation)

It was in 2002 when the Doom 3 demo was shown at E3 for which it won tons of awards for technical excellence. The Unreal engine, at the time, was complete and utter shit. It took ages for ID to make the game and to think of the concept for the story and so on, but it took even longer to convert it to the Xbox and the PC (thanks to Vicarious Visions). Doom 3 though, had atmosphere, was extremely fun and is one of the best looking games at the time...(see next comment)

You say that its an average shooter. How many shooters at the time Doom 3 was out, excluding Quake, gave you the ability to shoot the crap out of demons and other hellish creatures? Besides Painkiller, the answer is there really aren't any, and still while Painkiller was quite better than Doom 3 in the gameplay department, it cannot match the graphics or the atmosphere that Doom 3 offered. Doom 3 is anything but an average shooter, as games like DS were obviously inspired by it.

XD You're right mostly, but Doom's gameplay and mechanisms weren't revolutionary or even a bit different than a standard shooter, Doom 3 could've used something fresh, new and crazy, somethin' what Prey had(imagine something like coming back from the dead like in Prey adapted to Doom3, that would be awesome). Anyway, Doom 3 is still great game to play, especially with advanced mods, as a fan you should really try some of them...

heh thank you man, and sorry bout that, but I mean in terms of actual 'horror' and being terrifying, Fatal Frame is number one. I cant forget the first time I played it, I was so scared after fighting the first ghost in FF2, i took the game out and didn't play it for a week, couldnt sleep for two bloody weeks (thanks to my imagination making it even worse)!!! I never ever had sorta feeling that with any RE or SH games, i can play them from start to finish day after day, so sorry bout tht

The main character just dies on to the wheel
and that whole thing you played through was just his last grasp for life.

im a huge resident evil fan i love it cause it's like fantasy and folklore based in modern times like how lord of the rings is fantasy and folklore based in times long ago, as for pure horror i would have to say Silent Hill is much more scary than and RE, because it doesn't really ever make sense or have a solid story like RE, silent hill is more like insanity and twisted inner struggles and it's all in ur mind, while RE is all about the horror in the world around u :) thats how i see it

the first one that i played was re and when i played it again and again it just didn't scare anymore and in fact the longer i played it the more ways i find it to be funny unlike in sh there are still parts in the game that i feel creeped out as if though fear is slowly growing and i like it that way so three cheers for sh.

Silent Hill wins for sure. It has better music, better character design, better and more original creatures/monsters/demons. It also deals with true human emotion. I can't wait for both RE5 and SH5 but Silent Hill is just too amazing to compair to RE.

Just finished RE 1 and I gotta say from what I c of Silent Hill from playing 4 and watching videos RE 1 has a WAY better story and makes you think your ASS off without a guide I mean reading everything at once (from my files) after beating the game it was put together VERY nicely with twists turns and just plain frightning moments with very creepy camera angles and scenery anyway maybe SH 4 is a bad game 2 start with but RE vs SH 4 RE wins and plz everybody THIS IS MY OPINION

I've always thought of SH like Hellraiser, where it is what your mind makes it. RE is reality (I guess). I always enjoyed the fact that each character in the SH series may already be dead, and it'd their hell.
