I'm finally getting tested in 2 weeks & I'm nervous about it. I am 40 and I do not know what 7 x 8 is. I have many problems beyond Dyscalculia and it is getting worse for me. I have Anxiety and Manic depression and rarely leave the house anymore since I lost my job. I feel as though I am completely losing control of my life and I wish I had a friend to talk to, but I don't. I hope that one day there is help for those who suffer with this like I do. Thank you for fighting to help others.
Thats the problem. If you tell them you have dyscalculia, their "help" is to have you do hours and hours of math. They don't get that this just frustrates the hell out of you. No matter how much math I do, as soon as I take a break from it, everything I learned is forgotten. I could study really hard and learn fractions. But then I go on to algebra and as I'm learning that, I'm forgetting how to do fractions.
@Zukosgirl93 I'm finally gonna be tested for a learning disability. It only took my mother... oooh a fight with me about trying to convince her and 14 years to finally break and get me tested.(she's still not convinced, she still says i'm lazy) thanks mom, really. thanks.
How exactly do they test for this? Just yesterday I went in to get tested for Dyslexia and though I do show quite a few signs my doctor won't quite call it Dyslexia. He thinks I definitly have Dyspraxia, and, after research, I want to see him to get tested for Dyscalculia. I have to go back for further Dyslexia/Dyspraxia testing, so I will see then, but how do they test? Do I have to take a math test? If I do I will probably fail, which may be a good thing:)
@cherrizs haha you might have a better school; MSU is full of ppl that need to retire or actually keep themselves updated on learning disabilities (had no idea what dyscalculia was lol!). Good luck to you! Definitely don't give up and be an asshole if needed :)
I have dyscalculia and I hate it so much!!!!! WHY do the teachers dump the hardest homework on me?! She gives me extra homework that we haven't even learned yet! Only on me!!!!
It's hard to understand what you are saying. The fan in the back grow was distracting or the noise then the lights. I dunno I want to understand you cause I think your saying something I need to know.
yeah i suck at math to thank god im better at other subjects how ever i do show some dyscalculic symptoms but not sereious ones i think i do maybe have something fucked up in math
Its so hard for others to understand. It doesn't mean your mother is intellectually ignorant but many people are not open minded to the concept and need to realize that its a real problem. Some are able to learn a different way or through different techniques? I would try talking to the teacher after class and let them know whats going on; they'll usually grade you based on effort despite your poor scores. Talk to your mom too or even show her this video if you'd like! :)
I have adhd and dyscalculia. In school I was teased for it. I was called slow, airhead and stupid. Once a teacher called me out in class and called me lazy in front of the whole class. I went home cried to my mom and told her what happened. She the next day went to school to confront my teacher.
Omg!!! One day you'll be older and come back to your high school and inform him/her of all the cool shit you're doing lol. That is so ridiculous. If I were your mother...oh boy. Momma Bear x 10! I don't know if you're in Michigan or not but most states offer a program or educational thing that you sign stating you have a disability; from there you can get a lot more help from colleges if you plan on continuing your education. Biggest thing is to document it as early as possible :)
I did high school but I could not do College. The USA army came to my country and I got a job. I lost that and in 2005 a language school diagnosed me with dysgraphia, and refused to give me a job. I am bankrupt and unemployed ever since.
Everything you said in this video was soooo right!! It IS a mind-fuck!! Absolutely! I don't mean to swear, but its just maddening! Even though i'm in the uk i'm in basically the same predicament as you. My maths teacher talks down to us and even went as far as saying things regarding out future... it was so cruel, i felt like a tormented animal and almost walked out. I can relate to almost all that you've said in the video. Thanks for the vids!
I got accepted into MSU and Umich as a transfer for this fall and ALMOST went to MSU because it was cheaper. Thank god I avoided that, I'm so sorry you're going through this, I know how frustrating it is. :( I am lucky in that Umich's LSA only has a quantitative reasoning requirement, which does not have to be fulfilled with a math course, and since there are no math reqs in my major I actually don't have to take any math at all now. PHEW!
hey great to this on here and your fighting the system i don't have dyscalculia but i struggle with math to no end im help back in my communtiy college beacuse of it is so hard and one listings they just tell me to keep taking classes just like you im glad your fighting Im doing a paper on dyscalculia for my Ed pshy class to let people know about
I've found myself in a similar situation. One of my psych reports contradicts the other, so trying to follow the Disability Office's logic is like watching a never-ending ping-pong game. I typed the word 'exercises' into the search field on 'Learning Disabilities, ADHD and Education Support, The SAFE Site' and ran across some legal advice given to a person there. It told how taking a settlement causes the matter to be covered up.
Great Video!!! The word needs to get out on Dyscalculia so the "educators" can be educated on what it really is and how to teach those who have it. 5% of the world's population has it, yet no one seems to understand it. THAT has GOT to change! Good Job on educating folks on what it's like. Keep it up!!!! Dyscalculia is frustrating enough without the Educators making it even more so by their lack of understanding and help
ellyodd - Can you give the citations of those dyscalculia cases? I'm able to do legal research, and I'm interested. 'Links' won't paste here, and there's evidently no Private Message option.

Hi seharris11,
I've found myself in a similar situation.
Best wishes,

Let us know if you sue them. There's been a couple of lawsuits about dyscalculia before, but they didn't succeed.

Search on The Dyscalculia Forum. Google it. There's a OLD case about Harvard students, and a newish one about an art teacher.

Thanks. I'll post about this on that site that you mentioned. If you do a word search of "Harvard", you'll find my next post there.
