This song makes me cry every time. Its truly sorrowful. Puff slips sadly to his cave. I hate jackie paper. This song made me make sure my inner child stayed alive and well
Forget the debate about whether this song is about childhood innocence or smoking pot. The real-life "Puff the Magic Dragon" was a C-47 aircraft with 18 machine guns that could spray 3 football fields with deadly bullets and kill anything that moved within a few seconds. Peter, Paul, and Mary would not have approved, but that's the way it was 40 years ago. Anyway, this is a catchy little tune, and I still have fond memories of the days before I learned the truth.
i grew up singing this song and listening to it. im 17, tried drugs and i still know that this song isnt about that. we all lose our childhood and our innocense and even thought thats a sad thing, we still have our memories.
@rainbowlemurlover I'm 20 years older than you and I also grew up singing and listening to this song (as well as many of their others). There's something heartwarming about knowing that even after I grew up and lost my childhood, children were still "growing up" to this song.
probably one of the saddest songs I know...to me it's clearly about how childhood is so happy and in adulthood happiness gets lost. Just like Bob Marley's song "I'm Hurting Inside"...
Im a guy, 22 years old, hasnt cried since i was 10.. i thought i had forgotten how to do it.. but then i found myself in tears after watching this.. wierd.. amazing... im speechless.. thank you so much for this video.. amazing with all the children and the choir and everyone singing along
I really want to add this to my collection its been a classic part of christmas for 20 years what an awsome gift for the younger gens to enjoy and sing along too thanks for posting
Wow -- Mary Travers is the freak'in "mom" mtRNA|DNA to Gisel Bündchen, among the recent decade's mega-top-dollar-paid fashions models ever...whereas, many contemporaneous critics et al narrow thinkers, discounted Mary's "strong looks" as, at best, a cruder version of the "Julie Christie school of peroxide-locks"; whereas, in retrospect--at least for newer generations--review of the ubber-graphical stagings, w/high-key lighting, proves my salient point. Not my type, but lookers all the same!
@AFByt128 because only few songs could do what "puff the magic dragon" do- and almost no group can play this song so feelingly as Peter Paul & Mary. And even though they grew old, still are their children's songs incredibly credible.
@GwOpHD You are fundamentally wrong. They tailored their drug slang after songs of their day. This is a perfect example. This song is not about drugs, you show your ignorance when you say things like that.
This song is about children growing up, about how imagination can take you everywhere, how you live your childhood, the memories, the fun, and no matter what you thought you'd be friends with your friends for your entire life, but its just that time changes us all. We all grow up.
What a magic moment this video is!!!!. The little girl shown at the first of the video is almost a dead ringer for Caylee Anthony. I wish it could be Caylee. Wherever she is, I hope she has a wonderful Christmas.
Poor Puff! Deserted by his best friend. That ending depressed me. I'm glad in this version they ended it in present tense. Puff is his happy-go-lucky self again.
this is yet another one of peter paul and mary's treasures and god bless them for forming such a great trio of fine and wonderful talent i had met mary on three occasions and she was a real treasure and genuine person and so kind and gracious to others as we are to her and thank you so much mary for all you have giving to us and your legacy will live on in our hearts and in the great music that you made with peter and paul
I love this song. And this song is very popular in Japan. Probably at least millions of Japanese people know this song.Mos t Japanese people are not used to spoken English.But it does not matter at all.Because this song touches Japanese people's heart softly and deeoly.I think that this song is a masterpiece.If you are interested in Japanese songs,please come to my channnel.I believe that music is free from any kind of barrier.
i know, but that's what they want you to believe... what's the best way to get someone to believe that something isnt what it is...by saying that is something that society and the media want to hear and saying the opposite...they probably would have gotten in trouble if they said, yep, its bout weed...but no, they were like oh yeah...it's got nothin to do with weed...but only the marijuana culture knows the true meaning...and that's what they wanted to do...just chill, smoke some :)
A long time ago now, it was the first song I learned to play on guitar, then later, made a point of learning it when fist getting my head round brass instruments.
I was innocent and naive when I first heard this masterpiece. Now at 58, I'm not so innocent but fortunately still a bit naive and this is still a masterpiece. Our beautiful world needs more of this magic.

@jcast1290 Are you stupid? It's a fucking children's song. The song writers already disproved this claim when the explicitly say that it was NOT about drugs.

Brings back memories of PP & M performing in Melbourne Australia in the 60s. We sang along then.
Re reference to drugs, it is not. The song was based on a poem by Leonard Lipton which he based on a poem by Ogden Nash and called the Custard the Dragon.

It is about a child growing up, but the lyrics could actually hold a very well thought out argument about it being about marijuana. It is definitely about a child growing up, though. That's what Peter, Paul and Mary said, at least.
@CrystalsMusings no, its not about a child growing up. you are so far off its laughable. its a good song but he is singing about a "dragon" named, suspiciously enough "puff" why didnt they name the kid ronald, or peter even! not "puff"! your notion that this is about a child growing up is absurd. and when you say "listen...really listen." you mean make sure you took a bong rip of that good kush before you listen. no thanks bill ayeres, 60s are history not present.
@kykahl Not every person of the era were into drugs or sang about them. You sound like the parents of my generation LOL Do you think that music is of the "devil" too? Grow up and get your head out of the low grade Kush cloud you are in and see this for what it is. Its a song, nothing more. If you cannot see the story line then you need to work on your English comprehension.
Now I'm seeing my only grandson grow up so fast just like his dad did. He know longer cares for Thomas the Train. Yes, this is a bittersweet song. It is not about drugs but how time marches on for all of us.
THE 60'S WERE NOT AS INNOCENT AS THOUGHT. THERE IS AN OLD SAYING: iF YOU REMEMBER THE SIXTIES YOU WEREN'T THERE! hOWEVER NAMES FOR JOINTS ETC. CAME LONG AFTER THIS SONG AND IT WAS WRITTEN FOR pETER'S SON IN TOTAL INNOCENCE AND NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HIGH AS A KITE BRIGADE WHO DABBLE.
wow.. this video shows how innocent and fun the 60s/70s were.. I'd like to see if people of all ages would sing along to such a simple, happy-go-lucky tune these days.. :(
Just because that's all you can think about, does not mean that everything is about what you think. Try to do some background checking before you make stupid statements like that.
@slartybartlefast Lol why dont you go and do some background checking yourself hun? They said in interviews that its about weed. I dont even smoke so dont go assuming things..You must be like 8 if your too stupid to figure out what this song is about..so shut the fuck up and go play with your little dollies..seriously....grow the fuck up or leave bitch.
@swimmerbud you know i actually agree, i wish people would be more happy and sing along. its to bad the people from the 60s and 70s were hippies, dirty socialist hippies. that is not to say that all people who lived in the 60s held the same views. But "puff the magic dragon"... i mean come on. was he talking about smoking weed or what?! LOL obviously... but a great song. anyone who cant enjoy this should take inventory on their core beliefs... but to HELL with the socialist communist bums
The 60's and 70's included The Vietnam War, student demonstrations, racial riots, escalation of drug use, Watergate, the first two oil embargos both of which doubled gas prices, the recession and inflation that occurred at the same time in the late 70's, and the hostages in Iran. I don't recall thoses days being so happy and innocent.
kehh, what i meant, is that, this song is so plain and simple.. and i don't think a song of these 'standards' would make it anywhere in this society.. i don't need a history lesson :)
Obviously I don't know if you, like me, are old enough to have lived thru those times, making them to me a remembrance, or whether that would be history to you. If your thoughts are, and your comment intended to reflect, this song would not make it by the "standards" of today, I totally agree with you. Doesn't seem to be much room today for harmony, melody, and emotional depth in today's music.
No they weren't always happy but there was still hope then and freedom. It is the loss of these that has so changed this nation and the once proud people who formed it. I grew up through though years and became an adult. I raised children during those years and tried to get over the war. Not always happy...but always hope and the freedom to live life as you see fit.
Thank you for posting this magical piece! What a delightful YouTube clip!!! Classic! How many of us have beautiful memories when we hear this? Gorgeous!
When PP&M stopped playing and let the audience sing the chorus,did you hear anyone out of key ? It was exactly the same thing when I saw them at the Greek Theater in Berkley....... magic.
i remember when i was a real little kid, my parents would take out the album with this song on it that y grandparents bought my mom when she was young. My mother and my grandparents never smoked weed, but instead loved music, and i remember i would fall asleep in my pajamas downstairs on the couch just like my mom did 30 years earlier. Dont ruin my childhood by telling me its about weed, when its not. Ive grown up like johhny in the song, an d im now old enoigh to relize any of u haters r wrong!
@sweetness48 But...it IS about marijuana. AND other things. Once a song is let out in public, it takes on a life of it's own and becomes many things to many people. But, what's so wrong with acknowledging that, along with other things, the song is also an allusion to the marijuana high? Marijuana isn't something to shun. It's a wonderful natural gift and I think it's great that a song like this could, rather subtly, spread that positive message to so many generations.
actually, to quote the writers themselves, this is what their song is about. "... a loss of innocence and having to face an adult world ... I find the fact that people interpret it as a drug song annoying. It would be insidious to propagandize about drugs in a song for little kids."
@LOTRsuck nah man, I'm an American!!!! it is either Associated Press or nothing. Don't be spewing that Reuters nonsense to me....Seriously though, that fella just copied and pasted (down to the spaces and use of ellipses) from a cracked article. all I'm just saying is cracked articles are for entertainment purposes only. they aren't reliable sources of information, and you surely can't win a internet argument citing from them.
@scuba2nd i think he cited peter yarrow himself, he said it in a live performance, in those exact words.. thats probably where cracked got it from, it's on youtube
This song is part of my childhood and makes me tear up every time I hear it. For anyone to say this song is about "marijuana" is a true jack-ass who has no sense of imagination.
@sweetness48 But...it IS about marijuana. AND other things. Once a song is let out in public, it takes on a life of it's own and becomes many things to many people. It's a wonderful natural gift and I think it's great that a song like this could, rather subtly, spread that positive message to so many generations.

For all of the idiots here that are missing the story..its about a child growing up...listen ..really listen.
CrystalsMusings 3 months ago
@CrystalsMusings no, its not about a child growing up. you are so far off its laughable. its a good song but he is singing about a "dragon" named, suspiciously enough "puff" why didnt they name the kid ronald, or peter even! not "puff"! your notion that this is about a child growing up is absurd. and when you say "listen...really listen." you mean make sure you took a bong rip of that good kush before you listen. no thanks bill ayeres, 60s are history not present.
kykahl 3 months ago
@kykahl Not every person of the era were into drugs or sang about them. You sound like the parents of my generation LOL Do you think that music is of the "devil" too? Grow up and get your head out of the low grade Kush cloud you are in and see this for what it is. Its a song, nothing more. If you cannot see the story line then you need to work on your English comprehension.

Now I'm seeing my only grandson grow up so fast just like his dad did. He know longer cares for Thomas the Train. Yes, this is a bittersweet song. It is not about drugs but how time marches on for all of us.

wow.. this video shows how innocent and fun the 60s/70s were.. I'd like to see if people of all ages would sing along to such a simple, happy-go-lucky tune these days.. :(

''A dragon lives forever,
But not little girls and boys''
Wonderful and sad song !

he left behind his courage, and fell into adulthood. if only we could keep our dragon roaring, that would be enlightenment.

@Kalia1117 Yeah all you stupid pricks..People dont know how to respect music these days!

@amvb914 and you're an idiot.
Just because that's all you can think about, does not mean that everything is about what you think. Try to do some background checking before you make stupid statements like that.
slartybartlefast 3 months ago
@slartybartlefast Lol why dont you go and do some background checking yourself hun? They said in interviews that its about weed. I dont even smoke so dont go assuming things..You must be like 8 if your too stupid to figure out what this song is about..so shut the fuck up and go play with your little dollies..seriously....grow the fuck up or leave bitch.
amvb914 1 month ago
@swimmerbud you know i actually agree, i wish people would be more happy and sing along. its to bad the people from the 60s and 70s were hippies, dirty socialist hippies. that is not to say that all people who lived in the 60s held the same views. But "puff the magic dragon"... i mean come on. was he talking about smoking weed or what?! LOL obviously... but a great song. anyone who cant enjoy this should take inventory on their core beliefs... but to HELL with the socialist communist bums
kykahl 3 months ago
@swimmerbud

@sandygort
kehh, what i meant, is that, this song is so plain and simple.. and i don't think a song of these 'standards' would make it anywhere in this society.. i don't need a history lesson :)
swimmerbud 2 months ago
@swimmerbud
Obviously I don't know if you, like me, are old enough to have lived thru those times, making them to me a remembrance, or whether that would be history to you. If your thoughts are, and your comment intended to reflect, this song would not make it by the "standards" of today, I totally agree with you. Doesn't seem to be much room today for harmony, melody, and emotional depth in today's music.
sandygort 2 months ago
@sandygort
No they weren't always happy but there was still hope then and freedom. It is the loss of these that has so changed this nation and the once proud people who formed it. I grew up through though years and became an adult. I raised children during those years and tried to get over the war. Not always happy...but always hope and the freedom to live life as you see fit.

i remember when i was a real little kid, my parents would take out the album with this song on it that y grandparents bought my mom when she was young.

@annikastarr ROFL!!!!!!! :-D I never thought of that until you mentioned it. Kind of like "Quin the eskimo"?

@annikastarr
actually, to quote the writers themselves, this is what their song is about. "... a loss of innocence and having to face an adult world ... I find the fact that people interpret it as a drug song annoying. It would be insidious to propagandize about drugs in a song for little kids."

@LOTRsuck nah man, I'm an American!!!! it is either Associated Press or nothing. Don't be spewing that Reuters nonsense to me....Seriously though, that fella just copied and pasted (down to the spaces and use of ellipses) from a cracked article. all I'm just saying is cracked articles are for entertainment purposes only. they aren't reliable sources of information, and you surely can't win a internet argument citing from them.
scuba2nd 3 months ago
@scuba2nd i think he cited peter yarrow himself, he said it in a live performance, in those exact words.. thats probably where cracked got it from, it's on youtube
