It's so hard to believe she's only 5'4". She has such long legs and a long torso, I would've thought she was like 5'11" if no one told me, and if not for the fact that gymnasts don't tend to be that tall

I'm sorry, people can rave about her grace and artistry all they want. To me, she look sloppy and her lankiness only works to her advantage on Uneven Bars in my opinion. She looks frail and her landings always look shaky.

@MrLalol123 she was great but not the greatest off all time...it is too hard to determine that, but I wouldn't call them a fool either, there are legit arguments on both sides. Khorkina at this time in her career had gained the respect of the judges, which some of them may have been gymnast she competed against. thats why she scored so high.

The tumbling was fine here. Ironically, what tripped her up toward the very end of her career, was the easier moves. you can see here that some of the dance moves were not fully extended or landed absolutely cleanly. And the next year in Athens, her split jumps on the beam were not given full value because she didn't get full amplitude on them. And some of her dance moves on floor in Athens, especially her turns, caused her deductions and headaches.  It is a very odd turn of events.

She was so wonderful in the world championships all through her career but when it came to the olympics she never performed at her best. Or maybe she did perform at her best and she just got screwed at the olympics every time.

it's such a shame because watching that competition over and over again, she just really had one of the weaker meets of her life in 04. if she had performed at least the same bar routine she did in qual, the judges would've scored her in the 9.8s for sure to boost her AA chances.

that argument never made sense anyway. The judges have always favored Khorkina, especially later in her career when she was a little past her peak. I like Khorkina WAY more than Patterson, who had cool tricks but zero style, and I wish she would have won the AA in Athens, but Carly outperformed her that day. The judges didn't "give" Patterson anything.

Oh, man. I CRINGE at 1:29 when she lands her double pike. It was a nice landing, but the sound the floor makes when she lands seems like her legs should have snapped right there!

2.5 twist-punch full and whip-triple twist are high difficulty tumbling passes even by today's standards. Sveta COULD tumble, even not in her prime. Carly won 2 gold medals in international competition throughout her career. Sveta won 11. You do the math...

This was the perfect routine to end her last World Championships. The music was "Le Temps Des Cathédrales" from the musical 'Notre Dame de Paris'. Although her gymnastics and tumbling weren't the best we've seen from her, you can really feel the emotion and passion. It's like a swan taking its final bow to the world.

"The best gymnast of all time" was beaten by Carly Patterson at the Olympic Games...what does that tell you? Khorkina is one of the greatest gymnasts of all time even without the Olympic AA title. Carly Patterson will be mistaken for the name of a new soup or womens tampon in another 4 or 5 years, and already most have forgotten her. She isnt even one of the 50 greatest gymnasts ever even with her AA gold. She has the Olympic AA title but hardly anything else, she is the Sarah Hughes of gymnastics, Khorkina the Michelle Kwan.

Svetlana Khorkina IS over-rated. Her gymnastics is typically messy and she is quite the headcase, especially post Sydney.

Her only watchable event is bars, and even there she has some glaring technical faults.

Her beam is shaking and nerve wracking, non-fluent, and just scary to watch.

She puts emotion on floor but lacked true choreography. Plus her landings on double saltos were scary.

Her vault wasn't bad until she performed her own vault which was just a giant mess.

@FlicTuckFull Wow I guess it doesn't matter how many metals you win...you can still be called overrated..I guess its each to their own lol..I think Gogean is overrated and so was Patterson....I feel some gymnast were underrated as well like Pavlova, Produnova, Amanar, and Kozich. Overall I think it's the differences that make the sport great and the scoring that makes us angry at the end of the day. I say Khorkina is rated Khorkina and nothing else...she was special.

Pavlova stuck to her style and so far has made it to two Olympics and qualified for 3 out of the 4 event finals in Beijing thats why I think she is underrated.

@FlicTuckFull I can agree with that...I just don't get the disrespect some people show on these comments. They get angry with people who are telling them how it is, because they know.  I have talked to many judges and people in the gymnastics world. They tell me whats going on.

Most overrated gymnast would be Patterson who probably deserved a 9.1 for her crappy vault and a 9.3 for her sloppy and mediocre bars in the Athens AA, and if she gotten those would have lost the AA gold even to a Khorkina 40% of her former best. Patterson = the Sarah Hughes of gymnastics who won her fluke gold over a terrible field where her toughest competition was TWENTY FIVE year old Khorkina (LOL) and then smartly got out before she got humiliated by the new generation like Johnson.

Nastia and Shawn have totally shoved her into the land of nothingness. however Khorkina is still talked about and brought up by commentators which i love :-)

Yeah Khorkina is one gymnast who will definitely stand the test of time. She is special, a legend, brought something irreplaceable and unique to the sport which will ensure her a special place in its history.

I love Khorkina, she was the gymnast that got me into the sport and made me take notice, but she was not the best on that day, she had performed better UB, BB, and FX routines in earlier rounds, she may have won if she had repeated her prelim UB and her TF BB and FX

Her vault in the AA wasnt good. Ordinary form, height, distance, was traveling off side, landed outside the white line, and took a hop. With a 9.8 SV it was way overscored. Since Khorkina's slightly off bars is atleast 0.15 better than Carly's best bars if Carly's bars score was right so was Khorkina's. Khorkina's beam was low, reflecting the shaky routine. Nothing to notice there. So the main overscoring was Carly on vault, and a bit on floor too.

you listed 4 deductions, yes she lost .425 on her VT, a tenth each

and her UB routine was clean, she didn't have any major breaks or errors, so 9.575 was correct

Khorkina did her FX with cheated dance elements and a double pike with a step and a LOW landing, Carly landed her tumbles with her chest up and took tiny shuffles of little (.05) deduction

You are wrong wrong wrong. First off .425 in deductions would be right if the vault was so stupendous it was a perfect 9.8 out of 9.8 without the 4 things I mentioned which it wasnt. Pavlova did the same vault WAY better and scored only 0.05 higher which is a joke. Svetlana nailed her vault and with a 9.9 SV got LESS out of the SV than Carly's mediocre one. Carly's bars had a 9.9 SV so would have scored a 9.675 with a 10 SV which is far too high for her technique and form on that event.

Patterson was a good gymnast, but after the olympics, it was discovered that she had several back injuries that had gone unnoticed. Doctors told her to stop gymnastics if she wanted to keep walking... So I think the statement "smartly got out before she got humiliated" is very extreme and inaccurate.
