  • Your dui? Lmao

  • @Mannygondar Yea, I use to be a cop so that kinda rolls off the tongue!

  • Thank you for this video! You just gave new life to my CJ. And a new reason for the girl to yell at me while in the garage fixing the paint!

  • @85CJ7w350l98 Thanks for watching. :)

  • I just went back to school WOW thank you for the info. This will help me a bunch! I never heard of paint care like you tell it thats AWESOME!

  • @miuwu208able Thanks for watching. I have plenty of videos dealing with paint care that you can watch from my area on Adam's Forums. Just look for the Junkman's Corner. :)

  • im in the UK so is there an equal polish that I can get over here?

  • @LindenGarcia1896 Yes. Meguiar's M105/M205 is one brand that I can think of off hand.

  • Another thank you from the UK.....great videos....lve got a black 82 Mustang and a yellow 92 vette to prep paint and finish

  • @xxxscimitarxxx Thanks for watching. :)

  • A gracious thank you kind sir from over the pond in England. Im looking into start spraying and prepping my Nissan Silvia. Really trying to learn as much about car body and paint as i can.

  • @Funboymark Thanks for watching! :)

  • @Junkman2000 i'm painting my 1969 vw bug and the papers i have for wetsanding the paint is 1000 and 2000, considering i just want a glassy look, would those be sufficient when finished off with rubbing compound? (i'm no pro and not a car/paint afficianado, so in terms of "show car" i'm not sure how want i am trying to do would compare)

  • Always a pleasure watching your videos. Entertaining and informative.

  • @soflarick Thanks for watching sir!

  • BTW. i watch alot of diy water sanding vids. You are by far the Best! I work in the industry. Thank u!!

  • @twoheadz73 Thanks for watching! Quite a compliment coming from someone in the industry. :)

  • Alot of times we would leave the orange peel. So it matches the rest of the crappy factory paint.

  • worked at a production shop at dealship. This man is rite on bout sand paper grits. We use 1000 -1200 to start, a quick hit with 1500. Then compounded with white foam pad. then finished with black pad. Its gotta go looks good from far but far from good!

  • @twoheadz73 Dead on. Thanks for confirming that. You're dead on about "good from far, but far from good." That is the perfect way to describe it. I use that sometimes when I'm talking about women too!

  • Headlight cleaning in his last DUI? **DIY!**

  • nice video i actually learned!!!!

  • @midget586 Thanks for watching. :)

  • FINALLY! An automotive video from a guy who knows his stuff. Well done video with accurate content, well placed cautions, and a great display of talent. Kudos!

  • thanx for posting, getting ready to prime n paint my 79 ranchero

  • Finally some one that knows what there talking about ur good man nice job

  • @pancho0226 Thanks for watching. :)

  • all you got to do is hit it hard with some 40 grit, then apply a new clear coat with a paint brush

  • @203066111 Okay Eddie Murphy! lol!

  • @203066111 hahahaha

  • This is a cool video dude. Thanks for your time and expertise.

  • @LookieLoudLou Thank you for watching sir!

  • Hey, do you know if the orange peel is only in the clear, or is it in the base coat to? Thanks

  • @21duramax Orange peel is usually always in the clear unless you have the painter from hell.

  • ohh shit the sonar beam hit my eye and now im blind!

  • you look so familiar! I have no idea from where . I live in Texas and I got to VA every summer you around those areas

  • @MontyGarza I have not made it to Virginia yet and I've only been through Texas (although I did just do a detailing clinic in San Antonio 2 weeks ago). I get around the USA doing clinics so there's no telling where you may have seen me. Were you in the Marines?

  • @Junkman2000 Im a medic in the army and i was tasked to some marines for some training at Ft hood and I was also tasked to 1st marine division during the Fallujah mission in Nov 04.

  • @MontyGarza What a coincidence. I was with 1st Marines too, but back in 85.

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot I tried that once but I prefer wet sanding by hand.

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot I know nothing about the exact process of painting cars so I'm no help there. Your process sounds good to me but there's a whole lot to doing it right. That was my father's expertise.

  • thanks for the video

  • @mikeyz75 Thanks for watching. :)

  • lol i like this guy cool to watch

  • @GhettoChildTaZ Thanks. :)

  • @Junkman2000 and he responds to comments lol

  • Hey Junkman what are your thoughts on wet sanding on a C5? I have heard many opinions out there. Since the C5 clearcoat is "like steel" does that make a difference or is it really a thickness issue. I want no orange peel but I also don't want to lose long term protection. I will be seeking out professional help for this of course.

  • @j84buick Contact me on Adam's Forum or Digital Corvettes. I don't have enough room here to respond. I go by Junkman2008 on all forums.

  • @Junkman2000 I am a member of DC so I will shoot you a message there.

  • How much is the paint thickness gage?

  • @GaryStanionis That totally depends on what you're trying to get a measurement off of. They start at $150 and go into the thousands.

  • @Junkman2000 I'm a local mobile detailer and am going to start classes on wet sanding/color sanding and would like to be more educated than the next guy. So spending any where from $300-$500 I should be ok? Sir I dig you style and appreciate your videos! I will keep my eye out for them all!

    Thanks,

    -G

  • @GaryStanionis Join me over at Adam's Forums. I can better help you with all this stuff over there. I have my own area within the forum that has a ton of good information that you will want to see. I'll look for you there.

  • whats a paint thickness gage bro..? im new at this

  • @MrZiggy1979 Exactly what it is named. A gauge to measure how much paint is on top of a surface.

  • Excellent video and well explained. I liked the DUI comment, I was LMAO.

  • Should have called this vid color sanding

  • @journeyquest1 What's the difference?

  • I understand your reply because you dont know me and my abilities,,,infact just 10 minutes ago I predicted that you would say that,,,LOL... anyhow,,,I can paint,,and I can do alot of other handyman things,,I just dont know the steps required when painting a car,,,there are so many scamers out there and the guy that did my car knew that I wanted flake but did it with normal topcoat and now he wants more money to redo it and I am tired of being scammed by autobody guys

  • @fern624 I am not experienced enough to advise you on the details, however, there is a channel about painting cars that walks you through the process. I don't paint cars, my father did. I only fix the paint on cars when it gets jacked up, provided it doesn't need a repaint. Painting cars requires more prep work than I care to do. It's like work!

  • I just had my car painted but now I want to redo the topcoat with a topcoat that has flake in it,,,do I have to wetsand the topcoat before I add the new topcoat and if so how much do I have to wetsand ?/ do I have to completely remove the topcoat or just a bit of it and with what grade of sand paper ??

  • @fern624 Understand that I have your best interest in mind when I say this and that I am not trying to be mean at all but if you don't know the answers to these questions, you are the last person who should be painting your car. Why didn't you have this done when it was painted the first time?

  • YOUR GOOD BRO YOUR GOOD :)

  • @baggtahoe808 Thanks!

  • I like this guy,He knows whats what !! Very educated fellow!!

  • @jlescelius Thanks you sir and thanks for watching. : )

  • Hi...

I've been trying to wet sand a scratch out from my wing. I sanded a couple of times and I've gone through the lacquer. It won't polish out.

    Any tips??

Will I have to re-spray the panel??

  • @mrlopes1234 I take it that you didn't follow my advice about the paint thickness gauge? It sounds like you are about to learn an expensive lesson. Now you need to have it painted.

  • Fantastic Junk nice man!!!!!!!

  • @PhotoPerotti Thanks for watching!

  • Your welcome keep up the good vids

  • this bloke is funny whilst suppliyin his info

  • @Blackmarkethotrods Thanks mate!

  • which one are you using, the 200? i thought ultrasonic wasnt as accurate as magnetic on steel and aluminum

  • @richiez7

The 200/B Advanced. It is different from the others. It will measure up to 3 different layers. Clear coat, base coat and primer. It is forizzle!

  • @Junkman2000 thats wuts up...i would love a 200 but everything i buy i look at in terms of how many cars i would have to detail to offset the cost, and thats alot a work. i'll probably get one eventually, is it worth the money?

  • @richiez7 It is more than worth the money if you touch fiberglass cars and do this for a living.

  • FYI....positector makes a gauge that reads on fiberglass, carbon fiber, and plastic....if you can spare 1500$

  • @richiez7 The gauge that I'm talking about is also made by them. It is the one that I use on my Corvette. The price however is $2700!

  • Comment removed

  • @kasper247 Any novice I instruct will know how to use a paint thickness gauge.

With the gauge that I use on my Corvette, it will give you up to 3 different measurements of substances on the fiberglass. Reading the information is something a 10 year old can do. I stress the use of one because I cater my information to the novice detailer, not someone with years of experience.

  • @kasper247

So let me see if I understand your post. You are telling a complete novice to wet sanding that he doesn't need a paint thickness gauge to learn how to wet sand. As a matter of fact, you are willing to allow him to come learn how to do this with no prior experience using your car?

  • how do u cut and buff round edges cause flat spaces are easy like hoods, can u make vid on wet sanding rounded edges would be helpful ..thanx

  • @peteydre You do the same exact thing as you do on flat surfaces, but you keep in mind that there is a lot less clear on an edge. That's why a paint thickness gauge is so important.

  • can u show how to block sand during primer stage car in round spots if u know how..would be helpful nice vids

  • @willischamp1

I'm not really understanding what it is you're asking for.

  • @differin69

Thanks man and thanks for watching!

  • damn this is what I'm talking about!!! Details for Detailing!!! but i need some help. First, I was debating between this two porter cable models 7424 XP that sears has online wich one is the one junkman has for like 109.00 and the other samething but slimer for 129.99..............but now this meguiars professional dual action polisher came to mind for 176.99 wich im willing to buy wich ever is best, please help, thanks in advance and sorry for my noobness.

  • @DoNnEgRoW The older PC-7424, the newer PC-7424XP and the Meguiar's unit that you are considering are pretty much all the same unit. If you look at the specs of each unit, there are differences in power output but the differences are so small that you won't see it if you were to use these units side by side. The Meguiar's unit is definitely overpriced and with only $20 difference between the old PC and the newer one, I'd buy the newer one. IMHO, the PC is the same as all of the rebadged models

  • @Junkman2000 damn! that was a fast reply. and i was still watching your videos on the headlamp restoration and seeing the how safe is the 7424xp except rubbing it backwards on the paint, lol thanks for your time and dedication for this very helpful vids.....

  • @DoNnEgRoW Anytime my friend, thanks for watching.

  • i went to automotive school for collision and we didnt have to use a paint thickness gauge.we wet sanded a bunch of cars didnt mess up the clear..just shot some more clear on it buffed it out then car was sent back to its owner.

  • Well wait a minute, why would you shoot more clear onto the car if you didn't remove too much?

A paint thickness gauge ensures that you don't sand through the clear coat by telling you how much clear you are working with. It takes a lot of practice to know how much clear you are cutting off the car when just doing it by feel. For a novice, that is a very dangerous way to learn.

Using a gauge, you can sand and measure, sand and measure and get a feel for just how much clear you are removing.

  • This would not only be a safer way to do it, but also a much cheaper way for those who do not have access to, or the OSHA approved facilities to be shooting paint or clear in the first place. I don't doubt that the way you learned is the way it is done in the automotive industry, I'm just saying that your way is not practical for Joe Weekend who is fixing a small imperfection within the confines of his garage.

  • great video.

    very informative.

im going to wet sand and buff my red 95 camaro and am using your vids as guides.

dont worry - if i mess it up its OK cuz like ur camino it only matters how shes runs.

any car specific tips would be great.

  • In these videos, I was doing it the safe way. In reality, I wouldn't necessarily start with grits this light or use a Porter-Cable to fix the damage. This is a guide for novice users to introduce them to the process but keep them from needing a paint job once they got finished.

  • how u doing i seen a guy spaintjob the other day and the clear looked like it had little craters in the clear is it trash or fish eyes???

  • That's called "orange peel". That clear coat needs to be wet block sanded.

  • this man knows his stuff!!!!!!

  • great video i wanted to know if i can wet sand a 2002 car the paint is kind of missed up i have love bug in the clear coat i got the car like that i just want to know if there a way around it ?

  • First, do you know how much clear coat is on the car? Second, do you know how deep the damage is into the clear coat? If not, you are just guessing at something you have no training on and that could result in you having to repaint the panel you decide to work on.

Make no mistake, I make this look much easier than it is. You do not want to try this on a car you actually care about until you know what you are doing. Don't screw yourself into a paint job! Without seeing it, I cannot advise you.

  • i wet sanded my White car 3 times now no clear coat is left and we gonna repaint it but i did some mechanic work on it and the grease finger prints all on the hood and fenders won't come off i've sanded it to get rid of it.

But what is the best way to clean all the greasy finger prints off the entire car before painting it? Gasoline?

    Thanks,

  • NO! Who is painting the car? The painter should know what to use, or you need to find a painter who does!

  • My friends dad is painting it not me. He's owned his own body shop for 30 years. but i'm doing all the prep work. i think he said i can use gasoline but wanted a second opinion.

  • Double check with him. It depends on the type of paint he is using as to what you should use for the prep. Go with what he says. If he truly has 30 years of painting experience, he should know what he is talking about.

  • Awesome video series that may take some time to watch all parts, but will give you detailed instructions on wet sanding. Great job all the way around Junkman!!!

  • Thanks my man!

  • Comment removed

  • i almost pissed myself when you said DUI. hahaha.

  • I know, I'm a former California cop. It's stuck in my head!

  • So when I get a paint thickness gauge, how is it used in the process? How think should my paint/clear be?

  • When you get a paint thickness gauge, you will be able to measure how much clear coat or paint you are removing during the wet sanding process. That's what paint thickness gauges do, measure the amount of paint on top of that surface which has been painted (they also measure the clear too).

As far as how much paint/clear coat you should have varies from manufacture to manufacturer. If the car has been painted, it will have more of both when compared to a factory paint job.

  • @Junkman2000 i was wondering,my cars been repainted with a single stage paint with no clear coat, its fairly new paint, but there is some normal orange peel in spots. Anyways what grit do you recommend to start and finish with since its been repainted and theres no clear coat ? Thanks.

  • There's no way that I would feel comfortable saying without seeing the car first and also knowing that you are a novice at this. My recommendation would be to live with it as a body shop would have the ability to add paint if necessary. You would also need to know how much paint is on the car before you start doing something like this and that requires a good paint thickness gauge. There are too many things that can go wrong with you doing this. It takes experience and is a LOT of work.

  • @Junkman2000 Ive done some wet sanding before, just never done it on a good paint job,but I didnt know what to do cause the paint is pretty new and I didnt wanna have to add anymore paint really.

  • You will probably need to add more paint if you're not experienced at this. It really is best left up to those who know what they're doing. There's a lot of feel involved and the painter is usually the best one to do it because he knows where the paint may be thin. Or, you can get a paint thickness gauge and take your much safer chances.

  • @Junkman2000 Okay man thanks,I was just wondering since it had been repainted...I can deal with it until then though haha. Thanks

  • outstanding!

  • thank you.

  • i'm a little confused im sorry. my cousin painted it with 3 coats of color then clear coat, he said we let it dry for 2 weeks then sand it with 1000 grit then use a rubbing compound and buff it with wool on a pc7424. is this correct?

  • That process sounds correct (not sure on the 1000 grit though), but that is not something YOU do, the person who painted the car does that. It is not a easy thing to do and you could easily screw up your new paint job.

  • had my mazda b2200 painted last week and applied clear coats. now the paint and the coat had for a week dried. i want to buff it but i assume i need to sand it first before buffing it? thank you

  • ABSOLUTELY NOT!

You are about to mess up your new paint job! You should not do anything to it but wash it for the next 60 days. Didn't the paint shop tell you that? Only specific compounds can be used on fresh paint by a experienced individual. I can guarantee by the fact that you are asking this question that you are not the one who should be doing anything but washing your car. You will not believe (unless you do it) how bad you can mess up your new paint job by doing what you're thinking!

  • hi what is the advisable grit when you wet sand a new;y painted car? thank you. i mean after applying of clear coat.

  • I'm not 100% sure on fresh paint. Why do you want to sand on it?

  • LOL !! your GREAT ! LOTS of help TIPS ! Great video! 5 star to U ! Thanks for taking the time to make this vid!

  • Glad you found it useful. Makes doing them all the worthwhile.

  • Very informative videos! Keep up the great work. I've learned quite a bit from watching. Thanks Junkman!

  • Glad I could help!

  • Which paint thickness gauge do you suggest for not metallic surfaces?

  • One just like I said in the video. I t must be capable of measuring all the layers on the car and measure in microns. Nothing less.

  • Wondered if you had a specific one. The Defelsko PosiTector 200 Series (Advanced) looks good at $2695.00

  • I'm afraid that the price alone of that puppy would choke most wallets into cardiac arrest!

  • If you work on fiberglass or carbon fiber cars you need something like that.
