@0Twintig I hope so too. And think of ways to make it pleasant for him, such as coating the bit with molasses or offer him a treat as part of the bridling routine. General groundwork and handling to build respect should help that issue as well. Good luck!
Wow! That's the same thing I did with the 3 year old I work with. By the 3rd or so try, he just started taking it very easily! Now anything that resembles a bit in any way, even ropes, if I put it near his mouth (on purpose or accident) he just takes it on his own because he wants to! It's nice to see someone else having the same ideas as me for once!
@giveusafag I think it's very much worth trying. This nylon halter-bridle IS awkward to fasten the straps, but you can get a synthetic (or leather?) one which has small snap hooks to fasten the cheek pieces in, that style is quick and easy. Also try putting honey or molasses on the bit, and be very careful not to knock his teeth. Good luck!
WOW that was amazing especially for a two year old!!! I'm breaking a qh paint and the very first time i bridled him he did great but then the next time he throws his head up and misbehaves....he doesnt like it to touch his ears...any advice??
Touch his ears every single moment you can during the day, run your hands over every part he hates gradually, until he no longer responds. This is called "desensitizing". As for the bit, there are many things you can do for young horses. I like putting molasses on the bit the first few weeks I'm using it, and depending on the horses personality, accompanying it with a treat when he puts his head down and does everything right.
sneaky cat you are WRONG - this is a much better way. taking on and taking off the bit for a young green horse... my young one flipped over backwards when the weight of the bit hung his jaw. this way that downward pressure can be averted. once they are used to opening and closing their mouth for the bit and not snagging it in their teet THEN attach an apply as normal.
thanks for comments... hope your youngster is doing well! this guy is now 3 yrs. old & a dream to ride and drive, even drives in a pair with his older brother!
I never had the flipping over thing going on! My filly took to it like a pro. I was just stating that I have never seen this technique before. I'm NOT wrong! I just use a more basic way of training. I tried this technique on my horse by the way and had absolutely NO control! What works for some horses may not work on others!
You are using a halter with a bit attached? Weird! You should teach him with a real bridle and put it on the correct way with the bit already attached also your right arm should go over the horses head to keep him from raising his head away from you. It also teaches them the head down cue.
Thanks for your comment! When you get a clue hit me back. I used to work on a ranch with 32 horses.I have learned a thing or two about horses. Also I read a lot! And get advice from fellow horsemen on training! My neighbors train horses for a living, and I seriously doubt that they would purposely ruin one of their horses in training, to keep me from learning from them! I am training my 2yr old filly right now. She's training with the saddle and bridle and stands ground tied! How 'bout your horse
I actually like both ways a lot. I generally do the halter bridle, or my English bridle with bit attachment for head-shy horses. In that case, it works much better than a regular bridle. If the horses ears are desensitized, then I agree with the regular bridle. It definitely depends on the horse and situation.
Thank you sneaky cat!!!!! Horses learn on releasing the pressure. If it took you 60 seconds to get the stupid contraption on how the heck do you expect to take it off once your horse quites its mouth? what ever~ sneakey cat ~ I will take your way anyday!
Thank you,
We will trie it in the Weekend,
if it is not to wet and cold.

Our horse tries to rears when you trie to put the bit in his mouth,
he is ridden in a snaffle, wich we believe is a kind bit.
Hopefully, this might solve the problame.

that looks a great idea! do you think it would work on an older horse that hates taking the bit? although its tough getting the straps undone ?

its weird how she puts the bridle in his mouth, looks like it would be more difficult
horsesrulzz 2 years ago
Not at all! Getting bit in is easier, since he doesn't know how to open his mouth for it yet.

Thats a neat way to introduce a bit, giving you more control, and making it easier on the young horse. Thanks for the idea!

He graduated to a "real" bridle soon enuf... you've never heard of a halter-bridle? Right arm over his head IS better way.
