For power, MTH carriages rely on their own Dunlite 35kVA Diesel Alternator unit which powers the lighting, air conditioning, heating and Metcard machine & validators. There is no HEP installation, nor is one required, as they provide their own power and are only hauled by A Class locos.
ah okay thanks. whats the 'HEP? also when u say this is what all powers the carraige, is the carrage powered by a petrol motor to generate electricity hence what makes the smoke?
In a further answer, HEP is Head End Power. N-class and P-class Locomotives have their own HEP, so they don't have to use a power van to power the elctricity in Carriges. A-class locomotives are ex B-class locos, so they don't have HEP, hence they need to have a power van on carriage sets. MTH cars don't have HEP, but they have a Diesel Alternator unit. So you could say that MTH is part carriage, part power van. =D
