The answer to the main two questions here should always be 'what you think is cool'
Nothing else should have as much impact on your choice as that, otherwise you would be getting into an army for the wrong reasons. In-game power should be one of the lowest concerns in terms of priority.
Personally, I feel that playing at too high a competitive level damages the game, as it was never intended for that approach. As such I would agree far more with your mindset, Shawn.
This is a great help thanks shaun. I have a friend about to start the hobby but just wont listen to the fact that tyranids are one of the most expensive armies to start. Now I can point him to something a bit more suitable to his budget and a bit more forgiving to mistakes
I love these podcasts! You could make the morning show into a weekly podcasts instead. Have it downloadable files from your website (or even itunes) so people like me could listen to them in the car or on portable players.

Wow, engaged in less than 19 days, and still married happily? Mad props to you! :)
Anywho, a small "tip" for starting tau players: I highly recommend the citadel spray gun, it's excellent for getting a good basecoat on tanks/battlesuits, hell, any army with tanks can use it to good effect, it's also very handy for basecoating, etc.
Shawn, I wouldn't say that Chaos Deamons (in 40K) are beginner forgiving, a fully deepstriking army can be very hard when you are new. But for a novice they are great. Orks are also a nice beginner start, but a lot of figs... (if not going for Nob list)
necrons and tau are my primary and secondary armies
I started them before necrons and tau got ruined on 5th ed
necrons need a new codex so I can buy it find that gw made them even worse and spit on it
and the only way Ill be happy with a new tau codex is if they take out marker lights and give everything at least a bs of 5 and a few more units. and a all vespid army (just like kroot)
I play necrons and yes I do loose alot to my friends but i do win a little but hell all the games I play are full of fun also my necrons do have a kickass paintjob mainly I feel when it comes to winning If i get the right strategy (and roles) I can beat any of my friends anytime :D its a game i loose then i restrategise and hopefully win
i chose blood angels because when i was 10 or so (i am now 21) i painted my first fig with a half black half red colour scheme. it was very poorly painted, but i found it when i was going to get started again and that is my colour scheme now :D.
Orks is my 1st army. Love their junk yard wars look. I plan on doing either nids or necrons (once they have a new dex & more plastics) probably next year, after the orks are painted.
The recent codexes have had no point consistency. Who would take Legion of the Damned when you have ATs or Sternguard? Who would take Lascannon Sentinels for 50 points when you can have a THREE twin-linked lascannons AND 2 Heavy Bolter Vendetta for 140? And who would take Pyrovores ever?
It used to be about choice. Think Banshees/Scorpion/Harlequins. None is particularly better in than the other. It comes down to the situation and preference. In new stuff you don't get that kind of selection.
@NaelokQ its still about choice, only if you chose to play like your always in a tourny do you limit you choices. play whatever you want, damn the points difference and damn if it will kill in a tourny.
@johnkerry7 Add one guy to your gaming group that has an army of IG Veterans in Chims backed by Vendettas/Russes/Artillery and that attitude will really stop working. No one likes losing every game and you can't very well tell a friend to stop playing their (fully painted) army. So you've got no choice but to pack up your Tau and crack open Blood Angels or introduce a whole bunch of house rules to make the game even.
Imbalance doesn't affect tournies only. It ruins the game as a whole.
@NaelokQ well thats easy, i would refuse to play against him. and if the whole gaming group wants to spam it up for the sole purpose of winning at all costs...well then you have to ask yourself if it is worth it to play in the group. i know it sucks but if i was in a group that plays a game, using toy soldiers, and they treated it like it was the NHL finals every game...well then i wouldnt want to play with them. Thats why to this day i have never fielded a land raider against anyone.
@johnkerry7 I think the guy that storms off from the table is ultimately the worst sportsman. Hell, not many of the IG lists I run against are even particularly power gamey. It's just that they get WAY more bang for their buck in points and so no matter what they take they have the advantage. This is the problem. Entire races are just garbage compared to new stuff. It wouldn't be so bad if codex updates were fast, but it takes years and non-updated races are just left out in the cold.
Hey Shaun, why don't you and the other fellows make a podcast? You wouldn't be limited to these 10 minute segments and I'm sure a lot of us here would listen to it.
Hey BTP, on a tangent topic, which army/armies are more budget friendly? We all know this hobby, like any hobby, isn't cheap, but for relatively new players [like me] starting on an army that is easier on your wallet is a plus.
I like most armies in any game, a crux that hurts because I can never pick one, so budget might play a factor.
I'm going to disagree with you about Daemons being a good starting army.
Mainly because of the way it deploys. This could hinder a new player learning the pros of deploying right. Its also the only army that I know of that has the ability to completely destroy itself if the rolls are bad enough.
Although hardcore competetive players are more active in forums and online generally, I think that the "just4fun" players really are the majority of players.
@asilverplatypus I don't really care about winning or loosing, I have played Orkz in 40k since the 3rd edition and I have mostly been loosing over the years. Would I still be playing Orkz and now building a Night Goblin army for Fantasy if I cared all that much about winning?
I love the greenskins and I love showing off my army, I love hanging out with friends and I try to make the game being played with my friends as fun as possible. If I win I regard it as a bonus enjoyment but I don't care.
@Redvexer Only if you go all Grey Knights. Otherwise it levels with the IG and SM codexes.
No love for the Orks I see, I personally love to play with them but I guess the tournament crowd considers them too unreliable. My group tends to roleplay a bit, and having a rule that involves yelling a WAAAGH!! as your army surges forwards is awesome. Especially when the Space Wolf player howls in response.
I keep losing track of what you're saying because I get so caught up in looking at the fantastic pics throughout the video!!! I love the inquisitor... in the middle of painting one myself today (the lord with his retinue).

I left 40k due to the massive IMBALANCES you will find in the armies. As BTP says some armies are MUCH better than others.
Instead of playing 40k, play Warmachine/Hordes. You will have product support from their company Privateer Press who listens to the players concerns.

price increase will drive them out of bussnisse (srry i know i spelled it wrong :() ,
i like miniture wargames for fun, sorry gw used to love ur games , but now that i have
found other miniture wargames im slowly losing all interest in gw products,
also i dont want to be robbed of my money for a few models when i could get a full
army for that same price or even a fraction of their prices
