its cool to see how alot of these iseas have filtered thru into modern sci fi movies. ( like those floating islands which look heaps like scenes from avatar etc ) i was telling my kids how all the sci fi was in books when i was their age and was glad you had posted this so i could show them exactly what i was on about. they were totally excited by it, just like i was. thanks for posting!
Shit I wish I wasn't even born in this time era. Ever since I started watching shows and playing games science fiction related, I always envy our future generations. Getting to go to space and live in big ass cities, hang out with aliens and robots.
There is also a fair chance you will end up pitying our future generations, depending on how our world progresses. Flooding, famine, wars, the collapse of civilization as we know it as we overburden our planet and nature decides to restore some semblance of balance.... Whether we are on the cusp of greatness or despair... it's a knife's edge.
@abledbody hopefully, but at first we should evolve technology for it, then get enough money and fly there somehow... these are the resources that I'm talking about.. however we still can't deal with ourselves in this tiny little world, cause of pettinesses ... but I'm optimistic.. soon will everything change, working on it!
i have this book...its totally underrated...its what inspired me to go into conceptual design as a graphic artist..visually...you have to know your roots of passion before you set of to create something totally out of the box...these fine artist knew that...I just one day we will catch up with our dreams before the future becomes our past.
Thank you for uploading these. It's really hard to get a hold of this kind of art now. I'm lucky with that I recently vame into possesion of Chris Foss' 'Hardware' and '21st Century Foss'.
@ciak1 Well, we already have 3 interstellar probes - 2 of them remain active: Voyager 1 and 2 are active, Pioneer 11 (I think) is dead by now. Now, it would take several thousand years to get to the closest star, but they are still interstellar :P
Interstellar travel won't be viable until either fusion or antimatter propulsion comes around. Or gigantuan photon sails.
@TheRealSiguy -YEP, YOUR NOT THE ONLY ONE MY FRIEND !!!....I REMEMBER "READING" THESE TTA BOOKS IN THE 70'S, YOU HAD TO GRAB THEM QUICKLY,OR SPECIAL ORDER THEM....BUT, ALAS, HOPE IS NOT LOST !!!....THEY ACTUALLY HAVE THEIR OWN SITE !!!....JUST GO TO YAHOO, AND TYPE IN "TTA BOOKS", OR GO TO AMAZON, AND LOOK THEM UP, IT'S THAT SIMPLE MY STAR-STUDDED SPACE PILOT !!!....AD ASTRA TO YOU,MY FRIEND, AND FOR ALL OF THOSE WHO WOULD EMBRACE THE FUTURE !!!
I'm sure some of the illustrations at 6:31onwards were concept art for the planned film version of Dune originally conceived in the mid-70's (which ultimately didn't go anywhere)
From 2:05 that blue hover car interior looks like the interior of my old Citroen XM. I miss that car...
Anyway, great video - I'm also a fan of White, Foss and many others and spent many a happy hour daydreaming during school thinking of these images wondering what if. These may be futuristic but how I see it, if mankind can imagine it then we can build it....eventually.
This is a great vid, and I remember a lot of these. It would have much better had you not moved the cam, simply posted each pic. You transition out of the pics too quick, while moving the cam, and it's hard to make out much about these pics because of it. Just show the pics. They are nice enough without putting effects and cam movement to "spice them up."
Watching this just makes me wish the leaders (corporate & political) of the world would get their heads out of their asses and get this planet fixed so we can start building towards the kind of future dreamed of in the golden age(s) of sci-fi.
@LouieLouieification cool so your going to snap freeze yourself like some meat Popsicle so the aliens can eat you like a snack 2000 years in the future....:P
@MrSwaghack yeah,i feel the same way.still worth reaching for though. i plan on getting my body frozen after death. its called cryonics(its fairly inexpensive).there is alot of evidence which suggests its possible to revive people after being frozen for centuries, the technology is already feasible. it might be the only chance to see the future where space exploration is reality. its worth a try in my opinion.
a thousand of my alien thumbs up =) yeah, its very hard to find such books and im so happy my friends dad got boxes full of old 60s to 80s scifi books and magazines... =) keep up the work =)
Chris Foss and Tangerine Dream!!! Beautiful Expansive Imaginative Dream world. I am so glad you have put this together, It reminds me of my roots. This is who I am % was since a little child. I was drowned to Chris Foss and his Science Fiction paintings I was captivated by his imagination. Later I got into music that consumed the rest of my life and Tangerine Dream was one of the first musical encounters that changed my life forever. Now I am inspired to put my music to Chris Foss Art. Thank you
You've done quite a public service here, my friend. I was just lamenting that no one ever gets to see this great old art anymore, unless they happen to be poking through my bookcase. I was debating doing something like this, but you've done a far better job than I ever could have. Thank you!
Some of the images in this 5 part series are like old friends to me, others totally new. Either way, I'm so glad to find them, especially how they've been presented here, including the, as others have said, perfect music choice. Pure magic!!
i think Planet earth is becomin part of a larger universe and to me i think that wherere in the beginning and i Know this is fiction but i think that this is either the star wars or the star strek universe
Great post xx. I recognise most of these images from my collection of SF pb's and hc's.
I have a bedroom stacked and shelved with about 4,000 titles. I stopped this obsessive pursuit about 10 years ago. One of the reasons should be obvious. Did a bit of artwork myself, years ago, covers and illos for the BSFA. Love Hays and Whites work, for their detailed realism. In these post- airbrush days of CAD it's a pity that the pen and ink era is somewhat underappreciated. I.E.Virgil Finlay.
This makes me dream about the future. I wish I could somehow travel to the places shown in the video. Why is our technological development so slow... :(
These 5 part videos are incredible. They completely take you to another world. Great fitting music. And the HD quality is amazing. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks so much for this. I have a deep seeded passion for this stuff and finding these books is nigh impossible (although just last week I did score a copy of "Spacewrecks" at a local used book store) so digital archives like these are pure mana from heaven. You are a god amongst men.
Thanks, even finding this stuff online was difficult and I had a feeling i wasn't the only one that loves these amazing works. I'm glad fans are locating and enjoying it.
@Capng123 Ironically I've come across a copy of Spacewrecks myself at a local used book store. If you want to check out some old school space art, check out astrona.com
Yes, and now they say in twenty years they will solve the issue of mortality. At least then we will all have more time to wait for all the other miracles of technology that have been promised over the years.
@xxnightopsxx On a planet with a finite surface and an ever expanding human race population who now can live longer, say 200, 500 years or more. What a brilliant idea. : (
Simply beautiful, you couldn't have chosen better music for your video, Tangerine Dream gives it the perfect depth for your depiction, I still have a wonderful book from 1979- 1980 called SPACE WARS WORLDS AND WEAPONS by Steven Eisler, I don't know if you are familiar with it, it's got some of the images and drawings you've chosen for this posting, and it's really great to watch even more of these concepts in a way you could only have done it ...
Thanks Trevizons for all your comments, glad you like the video/s. I've checked out the cover of the book you mention and it does ring a bell but I'm not sure if I have seen it first hand. I see Amazon have a new collector's copy for US$59 and have added it to my list of books to grab.
@trevizons Thats the exact book I have, somewhere, back at home haven't seen for 20 odd years....was trying to remember what it was called to look up again, cheers! Great smashed robots in deserts I remember....
Brilliant. The music choice is perfect. It would be nice if we could get a picture list/artist credit (where known) so we could collect some of these prints!
My intention was to to try and group the images by artist and add titles of the book/magazine/film the image was done for - but realised I was going to create an impossible job for myself in terms of trying to organise and research it along with the time involved.
