Im just going to give you people what you need and say "You're so impressive" every time time an ivy league school's name is dropped. I will counter with a cleaver injection of my greatest life accomplishments
Cornell gave me a good impression originally until I see this. I'm wondering are all the professors like this? By the way, come on. The student was just tired.
@s3xiisir3n haha, no you wouldn't. Because by the time you're old enough to go to college you will realize that you're paying over a grand just for that one class.
I like the way he worded his way through that!! Geese, I'd give anything to be able to ad - lib a chewing out lke that. Interesting professor great way to handle an ass hole rude student who shouldn't have been there.
The entire length of this video is less than 3 minutes so any argument about wasting time is ridiculous. Teachers aren't stupid. They know an innocent yawn and they know one which is meant to be an insult. In this case the student was openly insulting the teacher and the teacher had every right to call him on his BS. Well done teacher. A teacher has no duty to be chill. His duty is to teach, and if a student disrupts the class, his duty is to call him out. So all of you children, STFU.
Dang...I don't even know what to think. Maybe there really was a student doing that on purpose to piss him off, or maybe it was a real yawn. My yawns, when I'm not really thinking about it are very loud...but still, he could have addressed that situation in a much chiller way, cause all it's gonna do is make him unapproachable, or challenge kids to want to pull even more annoying pranks on him.
For example, I am often late to morning classes. I had a writing teacher who did the usual routine of singling out late students and announcing it to class. This often happened to me, until one day I told my professor that there was a REASON i was late to class -- I have a medical condition that strongly affects my sleep cycles and makes waking difficult. My lateness wasn't about laziness or disrespect. Once my teacher learned the context, she understood and tolerated it respectfully.
that's a bs excuse if I ever heard one. If you can get to class a half hour late then you can plan everything a half hour ahead and get to class on time.
@jeddyimposter um, did you read my post? planning an extra half an hour would do nothing, as if i just need that half hour to get my facebook time in and then i'd on time. it's probably the most legitimate excuse imaginable.
your attitude is what's wrong with the way people treat those with disabilities. "they don't function like me, but since I don't know something is wrong and i don't understand what that's like anyway, they should be able to act exactly like me"
The problem is not that the professor reacted so severely to the yawn (which probably had nothing to do with disrespect and everything to do with fatigue), but that context was not considered. If the student was tired because he was partying the night before, yawning on purpose, or other irresponsible actions, then the professor is in the right. But if there was a reason for such an involuntary reflex, then the professor is way out of line. The professor did not stop to think about context.
@brunos6 in all circumstances, anyone who HAS to yawn can do it quietly, this was on purpose as a gesture of extreme disrespect. Stop trying to make excuses for a lame student.
@jeddyimposter you don't know it's a lame student. that student could have a problem. yawning is an involuntary reflex, not a word that says "i don't care." would a student with narcolepsy who fell asleep during class be rude? would an epileptic who had a seizure be rude? would a diabetic testing blood sugar be rude?
@jeddyimposter For all intents and purposes This was probably a kid who was really tired and lost momentary control. the teacher took it personally when he shouldn't have. but the point is that before having that severe of a reaction one should consider the possible reasons.
@jeddyimposter No, he's supposed to chill out and not flip out. If he takes it that seriously he should kindly invite the unknown student into his office if they need to explain anything, and then ask how he can be of assistance so they can work together to help him learn best in his class.
The problem with students nowadays, and young people in general, is that they have NO respect for the people who are trying to help them get ahead in life, namely teachers. I can't think of anything more contemptible than to disrespect your teacher. This person who yawned loud on purpose should be thrown out of school because it's obvious he doesn't have the maturity to be there. Anyone supporting the yawner needs to grow up. Preofessors are there to teach and you are there to stfu and listen.
@jeddyimposter i don't remember what my original post was, but it probably pointed out that the "offender" may have had different circumstances and that's why he is a loser and the other 220 students are worthwhile human beings. Maybe he had narcolepsy, severe thyroid problems, or was just really tired and busting his ass to go to class anyway. Yawning in response to fatigue is an involuntary reflex, and some people, just like sneezes or coughs, yawn louder than others. ignorant overreaction
ok ummm its not really a big deal my middle school teacher when someone yawns that loud that it is inappropriate and continues with the class. he just wasted his own time
with the class more then needed making everyone else wait for his temper tantrum to end
@dsnfldgfds look im not saying the yawning was right it wasnt but to waste everyone elses time for one asshole is just rediculous. remember PEOPLE PAY MONEY TO GO TO COLLEGE so if I had to pay I would want to get my education not be listening to one guy yell and waste time over something as simple as a yawn. talk to the person after class dont waste everyone elses time
@hobbitkiller45 Then you dont understand crowd control and shouldn't teach. If he had let that disrespect go then other young people would think that there is no recourse for being disrespectful towards the instructor and then before you know it the class is out of control and no one learns anything :SEE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
@dsnfldgfds ok I agree with that statement im not going to argue with you but it just seems like in my school this sort of thing happens one person fucks around and ruins my education by wasting time. I change my mind im not pissed at the teacher now im pissed of at the student whos wasting my education that I deserve. Not saying I deserve it anymore than the next guy but i dont want to have to have one dick who just doesnt give a shit ruin it for me
If i had a professor like this, i would be wasting my money. LOL Totally unacceptable to me and MY boundaries, and he just crossed MY line. Just be quiet and teach the class, I'm not there to learn whats right and wrong like a kindergartner. A mature educated professer wouldn't go this far. He should go back to being a 9th grade highschool teacher.
it's disrespectful. whoever was yawning was doing it on purpose for a couple of weeks now, as the professor said, just to send out a message that he's bored
In all of the classes I've taken at Chapman University, I've never witnessed a student disrespect a professor like that (and yawning really isn't that major). It really makes me appreciate the quality of Chapman's student body.
He is right. The behavior of students at Cornell and many other universities is often highly inappropriate. There are many better behaved students at community colleges around the country. Good for him!
Who knew that Hotel Administration was a subject taught at Cornell Univesity? Does Cornell teach Surfing, Leisure Studies and Hospitality too?? I used to think this was a good University. But now I know it isn't, not because of this loser teacher but because it offers degrees in a field that has low academic credibility
What a moron. Out of all those students, of course someone's going to yawn loudly. There will be disruptions. Not everyone's the same. If anything, students might want to complain about being shoved into classes with so many other students and dumbfuck angry professors with no common sense, or decency, apparently.
It wasn't the yawning that got him, it was the fact the guy was prob like "UHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH". It's like watching somebody chew gum with there mouth open and tongue flailing.
I'm with the lecturer......have some respect for someone who is umpteen times more qualified than some precious student. Students think they're so clever.....but they haven't achieved anything in life !!!!!
Bullshit. Especially in a large class, someone's going to yawn. It's human nature. And it would help is stupid ass, lame professors didn't bore students.
I believe the point here is that it is rude to yawn out loud. Professors are well aware that many students are overloaded and tired most of the time, but anyone can yawn quietly without making a spectacle of themselves. It's how you act in public that is the issue, not how tired you are.
I know lecturers who counterattack making fun about the "anonymous" disrespectul students, giving raise to a brief laugh of the auditorium and then continuing the lecture. They are the authentic professional ones
Sounds like whoever was doing the excessively loud yawning had been doing it throughout the entire lecture. That's just plain rude, not to mention immature. Considering all that, I don't really blame the professor for going to town. I bet the yawner never pulled that shit again. Probably failed the class too.
@danielmountain. I don't think common sense is the issue here. You're right, deliberately yawning loudly during a lecture is rude. However, I think it was an over-dramatic, excessive, and quite frankly, silly reaction to a mildly offensive gesture. I wonder how he'd react if someone sneezed? Scream and pull his hair out, and spend another 2 minutes belittling the class?
@sweetnbitter83 sneezing is involuntary.... overly carrying out the volume and length of the yawn is pretty much the equivalent of saying the professor and class isnt worth their time. It is a rude, classless and disrespectful gesture. If i was in front of a room full of people and that happened to me i would take it just as offensively as that professor did. put yourself in his shoes.
Having lectured at university myself, I can fully understand his reaction. It's a matter of discipline and respect not only for the lecturer but for the other students. Lecturing is more than just talking to a group of people. There's a million different things that you're constantly juggling and monitoring, so when some student wants to impress his/her friends by doing something stupid, it is incredibly frustrating.
Many students don't understand work hard, play hard and cause and consequence.
@jacknewt "Big baby"? Eloquently put like a true 12 year old. You sound to me like the kind of retard who'd do idiotic things like this in a lecture, assuming you'd even ever get into university. Grow up and engage your brain.
Yawning is something we all do. It's a bodily response. If you are that fragile and delicate to be offended by a yawn, maybe you should choose another profession
Very unprofessional Professor. Holding up a lecture over something as trivial as a yawn. Sure it is impolite and rude but so is standing there trying to single out someone.
He's the teacher, he can hold up a lecture if he wants to . It's his class. Plus it's more important to teach a young imbecile to be respectful than whatever was on the teaching agenda for that day anyway.
"Dude overreacted" is hardly a justification for this embarrassing scene by the professor. Nor is it an appropriate choice of words for a "university lecturer". A five second diversion to ask that the student see him after class and to proceed with the lecture would have been a far better alternative than this unseemly outburst.
ha, remember, professor, the students pay to be there, not to hear you bitch. If a student wants to yawn, well, let him/her yawn. Fucking jackass professor.
@cartmanfan0316 Just because the students pay doesn't give them the right to do as they please. The professor always has the right to enforce proper behavior and can call campus police, if necessary, to eject any misbehaving students. FYI.
@internetzpotato I'm all for the professor having the right to enforce proper behavior; however, not having a temper tantrum at the expense of a whole class.
Okay, dude overreacted...BUT...I am a university lecturer, and I do feel that unrestricted yawning is extremely disrespectful. I have been teaching since only 2004, but these past several years have seen a dramatic degeneration in my opinion, of the general attitude of students toward college faculty. I have (and still do) sit through my share of boring lectures, but whenever I have to yawn, I manage to do it discreetly and silently. It is the PROFESSOR'S class--NOT YOURS! Grow up or go home!
Guess he forgot that is the student's parent's who are paying his wages. He can't tell them they can't leave, they are adult students. What an egomaniac. Typical college professor, all are jokes and need to be shafted.
@oopsibrokethecow He's not a typical prof. And not a typical Cornell prof. I've never seen a prof at Cornell behave that way, ever, in 8 years. Typical college profs are professionals.
@oopsibrokethecow He CAN cover material that will be on the exam up until the very last second of class time, though. And he can make the exams so difficult that the entire class fails.
Way to go with the sweeping generalizations, by the way. I earned a PhD, teach b/w 300 and 500 students at a public university every semester in four separate classes, serve as faculty advisor for 3 student organizations, and write ~50-70 letters of ref for students/year. All for ~ $55K. Should I be shafted?
There is a polite way to yawn which includes covering your mouth. I'm with the professor here, an overly loud yawn in a classroom setting is just rude.
do you think he's seen this?

I know lecturers who counterattack making fun about the "anonymous" disrespectul students, giving raise to a brief laugh of the auditorium and then continuing the lecture. They are the authentic professional ones
Lyrero 5 months ago
He didn't need to flip out like that. He wasted his and the students time just by doing that. he gets paid to do his job thats it.

Sounds like whoever was doing the excessively loud yawning had been doing it throughout the entire lecture. That's just plain rude, not to mention immature. Considering all that, I don't really blame the professor for going to town. I bet the yawner never pulled that shit again. Probably failed the class too.

Does Cornell's channel have the entire lecture?
vgmaster9 5 months ago
@danielmountain. I don't think common sense is the issue here. You're right, deliberately yawning loudly during a lecture is rude. However, I think it was an over-dramatic, excessive, and quite frankly, silly reaction to a mildly offensive gesture. I wonder how he'd react if someone sneezed? Scream and pull his hair out, and spend another 2 minutes belittling the class?
sweetnbitter83 5 months ago
@sweetnbitter83 sneezing is involuntary.... overly carrying out the volume and length of the yawn is pretty much the equivalent of saying the professor and class isnt worth their time. It is a rude, classless and disrespectful gesture. If i was in front of a room full of people and that happened to me i would take it just as offensively as that professor did. put yourself in his shoes.

The issue here isn't whether or not someone is yawning, folks. The issue is 'how loud' they are yawning.
danielmountain 5 months ago
Also, it's clearly an ongoing issue. So credit to him.
DevNulZor 6 months ago
Having lectured at university myself, I can fully understand his reaction. It's a matter of discipline and respect not only for the lecturer but for the other students. Lecturing is more than just talking to a group of people. There's a million different things that you're constantly juggling and monitoring, so when some student wants to impress his/her friends by doing something stupid, it is incredibly frustrating.
Many students don't understand work hard, play hard and cause and consequence.

That's ridiculous, this man is a big baby.
jacknewt 5 months ago
@jacknewt "Big baby"? Eloquently put like a true 12 year old. You sound to me like the kind of retard who'd do idiotic things like this in a lecture, assuming you'd even ever get into university. Grow up and engage your brain.
sbowesuk 5 months ago 3
@sbowesuk
Get mad. You know that throwing a temper tantrum is unprofessional.
jacknewt 5 months ago
Yawning is something we all do. It's a bodily response. If you are that fragile and delicate to be offended by a yawn, maybe you should choose another profession
sweetnbitter83 6 months ago
@sweetnbitter83 It's offensive if you do it that loudly during a lecture. Common sense.
danielmountain 5 months ago
@GettingOutThere I-agree absolutely. Truly a sad excuse for a "professor"
sweetnbitter83 6 months ago
Very unprofessional Professor. Holding up a lecture over something as trivial as a yawn. Sure it is impolite and rude but so is standing there trying to single out someone.
Sir, grow up and get on with your job.
GettingOutThere 6 months ago 7
@GettingOutThere

A five second diversion to ask that the student see him after class and to proceed with the lecture would have been a far better alternative than this unseemly outburst.
wesnikki 6 months ago
ha, remember, professor, the students pay to be there, not to hear you bitch. If a student wants to yawn, well, let him/her yawn. Fucking jackass professor.
cartmanfan0316 6 months ago 20
@cartmanfan0316 Just because the students pay doesn't give them the right to do as they please. The professor always has the right to enforce proper behavior and can call campus police, if necessary, to eject any misbehaving students. FYI.
internetzpotato 5 months ago
@internetzpotato I'm all for the professor having the right to enforce proper behavior; however, not having a temper tantrum at the expense of a whole class.
cartmanfan0316 5 months ago
Okay, dude overreacted...BUT...I am a university lecturer, and I do feel that unrestricted yawning is extremely disrespectful. I have been teaching since only 2004, but these past several years have seen a dramatic degeneration in my opinion, of the general attitude of students toward college faculty. I have (and still do) sit through my share of boring lectures, but whenever I have to yawn, I manage to do it discreetly and silently. It is the PROFESSOR'S class--NOT YOURS! Grow up or go home!

i think he yawned
hi14316 6 months ago
Guess he forgot that is the student's parent's who are paying his wages. He can't tell them they can't leave, they are adult students. What an egomaniac. Typical college professor, all are jokes and need to be shafted.
oopsibrokethecow 7 months ago
@oopsibrokethecow He's not a typical prof. And not a typical Cornell prof. I've never seen a prof at Cornell behave that way, ever, in 8 years. Typical college profs are professionals.
seanhannity69 6 months ago
@oopsibrokethecow He CAN cover material that will be on the exam up until the very last second of class time, though. And he can make the exams so difficult that the entire class fails.
Way to go with the sweeping generalizations, by the way. I earned a PhD, teach b/w 300 and 500 students at a public university every semester in four separate classes, serve as faculty advisor for 3 student organizations, and write ~50-70 letters of ref for students/year. All for ~ $55K. Should I be shafted?

ninjatomaster 7 months ago 2
There is a polite way to yawn which includes covering your mouth. I'm with the professor here, an overly loud yawn in a classroom setting is just rude.
pchelpme 7 months ago 2
weather or not this is an ivy league. the teacher over-reacted. the professor disrupted his own class and wasted his own time over a little loud yawn
