  • shit gets good when payton comes in with that trumpet

  • I'll echo what a couple other people have posted: this video is almost painful to watch. Trey and Bob don't seem to gel too much ... Payton, though, really does tie it all together.

  • I only wish the acoustic and electric were closer in tuning...

  • nic peyton made this jam

  • A jam session with Jerry and Trey woulda been cool.

  • bob weir looks like doug from weeds

  • @PhishCactus no doug from weeds looks like bob weir in 2001

  • @PhishCactus haha...Never thought of it till you mentioned it but yeah he does.

  • These guys were together at a live panel discussion event called The Connecticut Forum and at intermission just spontaneously decided to do something together. They played with it a little backstage and just came out and let it rip. This is the truest of jams....the way it is meant to be.

  • I'm not really sure why Bobby started as he did, it was almost like a fast retarded wharf rat, which Trey surely wouldn't follow. So what the heck was supposed to happen here? If you follow the whole thing you can actually sense music was made and also refill your meds.

  • Nick Payton is like "What the fuck is this ass hole doing"

  • I think that Nick should have held the rhythm down and let Bob play Jazz licks and let Trey put a Wah Wah pedal on that acoustic and rip it up.

You can't deny anyone on that stage. I think they just started a new genre of musical style called STFUWIERRICH.

  • It would be much better if both guitars were in tuned, but awesome nonetheless. Is this jam based off of a song/arrangement or is it a jam to the extreme, not improvising on a song, just improvising on an improvisation haha if that makes sense.

  • Awesome jam. They all did a great job. No one was better than the other...

  • That trumpeter was WONDERFUL.

  • a cool jam...Nicholas is a monster on the trumpet. Thanks for posting this clip.

  • Why is Nick with them?

  • They played very well together!

  • Bobby's guitar sounds so nice...

  • who likes bobs guitar? =)

  • trey and bobby find a very strange groove. sorry if some of you can't get into it. this is very intellectual music.

  • Thanks to Payton for making a musical statement, the other two guys are professional noodlers.

  • Wow trey has to feel like he's under some serious pressure.

  • what a nice little jam. Real mellow, very nice.

  • @bosco258- Totally with you. In Trey's defense, he is a god of getting sounds out of an electric guitar that I have never heard anywhere else. He is a true performer and an innovator of melody and rhythm. I don't know anyone else who can emote through an instrument the way he does.

  • are they tuning their guitars???

  • c'mon this is pretty bad all in all...Im sure trey and bob would admit that much

  • Payton saves this... trey and weir cant find any sort of cohesion... kind of embarrased to watch this

  • UMMMM HIGHLY DISAGREE

  • I agree except with the embarrassment part ;) but yeah, the trumpet melody definitely ties a ribbon 'round and through the guitar parts.

  • Chris Botti eat your heart out

  • i love this jam, dont know what you guys are talking about.

    its just super mellow.

  • Nicholas Payton got those Miles Davis licks

  • Big Dead fan, and big fan of Trey's..Payton kills on this..hes probably like "I cant wait to go play some real music" I really feel like Trey and Bob are out of their element here..

  • "Real music" ?? im sooooo tired of this ignorance. anyone who thinks this way doesn't really get music in the first place.

  • yea abacaba..you took that too literally and too seriously I think..

  • A little disappointing. I always wanted to see Trey jam with Bob, but it seems like they just couldn't decide where to go with it. Great trumpet though.

  • youre a little disappointing

  • Ha! How long did you spend thinking that up?

  • yeah i thought the same way. i wanted to see like a nice long jam between those two but it seemed like they just didnt know which direction to go in

  • I agree... they should have another chance =) but jam is jam.. :)

  • check out the phish 10/6/2000 show at shoreline. bobby plays on the encore with phish. elpaso, chalkdust, and west la fadeaway. it's nearly impossible to find a good recording of this show though but it's out there

  • Tuning of the 2 guitars still not perfect(2 45)

but then the trumpet comes out with some beauttiful lines in E

  • bobs a rhythm guitarist!......ozzy wouldnt work with the grateful dead.....as bob wouldnt work with ozzy! plain and simple!....quit givin bob a hard time... actually i think their rhythm is perfect.....for slow jazz....its complicated patterns..so ha!

  • wow bobby without the beard...

  • I was there... amazing. They were so nice.

  • trumpet makes this

  • trey is a ginger

  • All great musicians..BUT...You think this tune brought out the Best they can play? Don't think it did..and..that equaLS boring..but..i listened to it all..conundrum..or whatever i got

  • man imagine this video with out Payton... it would be lacking pretty bad

  • your a dumbass jazzfan. i dont know if youve ever heard of him but a guy by the name of eric clapton once said that trey anastasio was the best guitarist alive.

  • I agree with the statement, but its turned out to be a fallacy that he said that. If he had they would have played together by now

  • @lbg2690 I have heard that but I never saw it anywhere, do you know where to look ?? I agree

  • im sure trey and the other guy are good musicians, but this kinda comical. neither of those guys plays with good rhythm and the weir guy keeps messing up the form. payton's solo was pretty amazing considering this is a harmonically simple three-chord blues form played with two guitarists who seemed slightly confused as to what was going on

  • was ist mit den guitareos los?

  • nicolas payton rules

  • ive never heard bobs quitar sound like that wow wierdddd

  • Payton is really "Head and Shoulders" above both Weir and Trey. Those two might have as well "Phoned their performance in". Its called haveing command of your talent.

  • your a fucking douchebag bro

  • Sorry Man But He is Totally Right..... THese Fools on Guitar BITE MAJOR ASSSSSSSS

  • Trey actually majored in Jazz composition in college, so it looks like hes the real Jazzman.

  • OH! excuse me..... I must have over looked his great improvising..... WHO CARES if He majored in jazz comp.... That Means Nothing Nick Payton Blows them out of the water

  • Did i fucking say he's better then Nick Payton? no. I said he was fucking better then you.

  • HAHA......You are funny..... Very entertaining actually, I think its funny that you judge and compare musicians that you have never EVER heard... I still think He Still Sucks.

  • very enterraining, well i still think you suck, in comparison to Trey. Post a video of you playing and prove me wrong.

  • You think I suck lol..... You have videos?

  • I never said i was better than you, infact, i never even mentioned i played.

  • how bout there all great musicians? u guys r crazy to compare three very unique musicians. their all different and great at what they do

  • how bout there all great musicians? u guys r crazy to compare three musicians from totally different backrounds and styles. their all different and good at what they do

  • He studied composition and was a philosophy major for a while, but I'm pretty sure he switched to creative writing. That's why his senior thesis was the Man Who Stepped into Yesterday..

  • boob weird officially counts as two musicians

  • Yes it is because "Inlaw Josie Wales" is played with an open tuning...

  • sblended

  • at the end of the video the host say's "and thanks to these FOUR extrodinary musicians" lol ......theres only three

  • There's only one actually

  • you sir are also a douchebag

  • bob weir's solo was strugglin

  • @ jdwrx01 the fourth musician being referred to is Beverly Sills, whom didn't participate in the playing in this video

  • best fuckin thing ive heard to date. MUSIC from all points

  • jaydude214, good point I love the Dead always something new and good to listen too,but Jerry and Kreutzman where only really good players.

  • Very false, Kreutzman was awed by Mickey Hart's technical prowess when he first saw him play. Almost all the piano players (besides Pig) were extensively proficient. And Phil, Phil is just an overall great musician. Bass wasn't even his main instrument. He started playing it considerably late (for a musician) in life. He picked it up just to join the soon to be Dead. Phil's greatness comes from his musicianship, not his technical work. He makes all his notes count. See below for Weir@jay

  • nobody noticed that trey's guitar is tuned to an open tuning...?

  • holy shit... great fun GO CONN

  • im a big fan of dead phish and paytons music.... I think trey and payton are both excellent musicians, but I'm sorry bobby was never a good guitarist. It worked with the dead somehow but the bottom line is that he just sucks. payton kills it here though.

  • i'm empathic jay but just because bob doesn't solo all that well doesn't mean he "just sucks". Bob was Jerry's best guitar student. He really found himself as a guitar player accompanying the Dead. Therefore, his forte evolved into rhythmic comping instead of soloing.Bob, in turn, became one of the most innovative comping guitarists. His chord voicings are so harmonically original when improvising. This video does not showcase his (or trey's) skills, he is out of his element here.

  • very good

  • very uninspired playing by trey, weir actually kinda sucks and nick payton saves this from being unwatchable

  • Ha! I'd like to see what you came up with when put on the spot with any one of those individuals. Get real.

  • youre right, i'm sure even mozart played some less than perfect concerts in his day

  • I was going to post a response and then I realized your an ASS... Its not what you play its what you don't play

  • If not for effect...then for originality duesch. Come on coat-tail rider, we won't miss you when your gone!!

  • so cool, this jam evokes Connecticut as a place so well!

  • Payton>Trey>Weir

    sick jam though. Loved it.

  • nate your an idiot, are you honestly going to compare payton to trey or weir? they play different instruments! and who's to say whats better or worse, i can't stand when people try to compare musical artists that aren't remotely similar

  • wish weir didn't come in with that last chord after peyton's long sustained ending note.

  • The fact is that they play a long 24 bar long blues and which Payton masterfully plays but then Weir just fucks up the form and if I were Trey, I would of stuck to the form and MADE Weir follow. It just shows how mindless Weirs improvising is. He can't improvise on a high or in this case even a basic one. Payton is on a whole other level this is just a fact. More people probably want to hear T and W and it just shows what a sad state of affairs it is in the US. T and W's time is real weak too.

  • nice and very classy!

  • Seriously. This sounds great! Typing more than enjoying?

  • yup, nick does his job and gets out of there. pure class. i was feeling a little nervous for him at first.

  • Well, in the face of such a staggeringly mature and decisive comment such as that, what could anyone say in defense? You most certainly win. Try not to choke on your own rage.

  • It never ceases to amaze me the amount of anger that music clips generate on youtube, and there are some wonderfully rare and intriguing ones, too. We are lucky to live in a world with a sacred universal language like music, which breaks down all barriers. Open your minds and hearts and listen- not everything has to be a competition. In fact, the best music is not. It is a collective cry.

  • On a smaller note I think we're also lucky to live in a world with youtube where you can get virtually any music you want at the click of a mouse, I think having that has spoiled a lot of people and made them quicker to criticize when they should just listen and enjoy

  • Did you really just type the word "colored"??? phishdog needs to be hung by the nuts raw from a willow tree

  • I would've picked a way more fun chord progression than that. it's kind of boring and limits the types of phrasing you can play with.

  • its pretty fucking hard to just start jammin out of the blue with people u dont usually jam with abealexander but u would only know that bein a musician so ill excuse ur ignorance. As for bob weir hes awesome and he thinks ur a d-bag

  • Trumpet is atypical to Bob W's style, but this was really done well. Trumpet guy had a nice vibe. Trey seemed to be much more at home with a brasswind in the trio.

  • come back to us happy and healthy trey - soon!

  • Oh, and anyone who says Phish could not exist without the Dead just reiterates the same popular misconception that has so consistently been refuted by those with more than a mere superficial knowledge of Phish's music.

  • Phish are a part of a genre that the Dead CREATED, so it is quite safe to say that Phish would NOT have done what they did with out the Dead. Same goes for any and all jam bands.

The Dead invented the forum and canvass on which so many musicians after them followed. It is not to say that anyone has copied the Dead, or is not creative, it is just to say the Dead did first, and best.

As for Bob having no talent, no taste in clothing maybe, but no talent???

    Bobby rocks!!!

  • @sruckoldt

So what you're suggesting is that the grateful dead invented improvisation. Interesting.

  • Bob Weir is a talentless ass clown. The only person he ever learned to play WITH is Jerry. It's so obvious that his style is totally self-centered. His changes here are completely at random - even Payton was having trouble following his mess (just look at his face for the first several bars; he's like, "what the hell is this guy doing").

  • well when you play with someone for more than 30 years you become adapt to the way that they play. you can shut up because bob weir is deff not a telentless ass clown, he may not be the best guitarist but he deff knows his way around the neck and can jam. haha abealexander1 you are the clown....

  • you've heard of "mob rules"... well, i say "bob rules".

anyone who thinks he sucks, just plain doesn't get it.

  • wow. you guys are full of shit. bob weir is the man and so is trey.

  • I think all these comments should be deleted. You're all a bunch of fucking idiots....

  • Is bob playing a Rickenbacker? If not what kind?

  • No its a Modulus custom made for him I believe

  • HAHA! Who does this guy think he is? Without Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead Phish would never have existed in the way that it did. What makes you come post comments on youtube bashing great musicans. Do you have any credibility to talk at all? Maybe you should keep your comments to yourself buddy because I'm sure that noone really wants to hear them.

  • I guess you're talkin' to me, Shine? I know the Grateful Dead're important and that Bobby is a key element there, but HERE he's disgraceful... as he's been every *single* time I've seen him play live. I saw him walk onto a jam Les Claypool was having with his RatDog drummer and keyboardist and straight F*CK it up. By the way, to the people who wanted to know about Trey and jazz... I'm gonna try and post a "video response" to this... Phish does Jump Monk, 3/12/88.

  • wow these comments are something else...can i add my opinion?? hahaha

  • What's really funny here (as with everywhere I see him) is how much Bob Weir absolutely sucks ass. If Trey didn't have to cover for him every 4 bars, maybe we'd've heard some interaction between Mr. Anastasio and Mr. Payton. Thanks, Bobby.

  • seriously!!!

  • I think probably a lot of these comments are based on the fact that, no matter how good, jazz musicians, especially with a horn (don't even yell at me about Miles), tend to be confined to a certain genre/field of playing, whereas, most especially in Phish, Trey has danced on his fretboard over many different genres of music, incorporating them all into what, as a broad category, I could only call improvisational-psychadelic-funk-rock.

  • The only reason this is is because the general public do not accept wind instruments as "cool" or "up-to-date". people see them as typewriters to computers.

  • Dude, kid, whatever, your comment reeks of ignorance. Trey doesn't come close to Paytons level of playing, versatility or on any other level. The only thing that Trey can do here that Payton can't is play chords and I'll bet P. could smoke Trey on chords if he sat down at a piano like most great Jazz horn players they are very well versed in chords and changes way beyond someone like Trey. The fact is Payton can play many more styles than Trey and on a much higher musical level.

  • Awful.

  • In a Silent Way? Maybe just hearing things. Love Nicholas Payton man. Great tone.

  • I couldn't disagree more I think he is by far one of the finest improvisational musicians of our time and his musical vocabulary is up there with just about anyone. BUT I respect the opinion of others :)

  • Don't get me wrong Payton is a world class player and my comments were not a criticism of him at all. My comments were in direct response to some comments regarding Bobby and Trey.

In what context do you find Trey repetitive? Are you referring to compositions he has written or are you referring to his improvisational tendencies? In either case I'd have to disagree actually as I have been a fan of Trey's since about 1990 and studied his music from a technical standpoint quite extensively.

  • Funny part is that Trey can probably write and PLAY better horn lines then most horn players can.

As for Bobby. Probably the most original rhythm guitar players of all time. As a schooled musician I will bet ya a million dollars he has written and played in time signatures your little mind can't even comprehend.

    douchebags

  • I think you are full of shit. Don't talk about what you don't understand. Speaking of what your little mind can't comprehend, I think you should spend maybe two more minutes a day actually listening to JAZZ and you will realize that Trey plays a much different kind of music, which is why this collaboration is so awesome in the first place. Stop comparing the incomparable!

  • Actually Trey has a strong foundation in Jazz music; in fact he studied Jazz composition in a formal environment. As for me and my little mind, I hold a masters degree in Jazz studies and have been a serious musician for about 18 years. It would actually be a PLEASURE to send you my credentials as well as several examples of Trey's various musical projects that OBVIOUSLY fall into the Jazz idiom.

    Next time, check your facts.

  • Sorry man, I just couldn't comprehend that someone who is as well versed in jazz as you could imply that Trey is as jazz-literate as someone like Payton, but maybe I just got the wrong impression. What do I know anyway, I am just a high school senior who is hoping to get into Eastman. On a better note, it's nice to encounter a jazz musician who is not so much of a purist that he does not acknowledge musicians commonly referred to as "rock" artists. Any Trey material you'd recommend?

  • It is amazing how ignorant people are to Jazz and how much it takes to play it. They just DON"T have a clue. This is not meant to be mean to anyone, it is just a fact..

  • Disregarding the fact that treyphan77 is clearly a big-headed douchebag with an ego much too large for even the most seasoned musicians ("I have been a fan of Trey's since about 1990 and studied his music from a technical standpoint quite extensively"...congratulations, Professor Phishfan), I don't see where you are going with this comment.

  • wow, nick is such a great player. who is the guy on electric guitar? he has absolutely no sense of time, and he's out of tune. They should be extremely gratefufl for having the opportunity to learn from nick.

  • That's Bob Weir on guitar.... you know.... founding member of The Grateful Dead. That's just his style..... his sound.

  • when they go to the five chord, they're tossing in a flat 9 and 13... god only knows if its intentional, but nick gets right around it... wish the guitar players had tuned, no wonder he only took one chorus! :-p

  • can you please get weir back to the CT forum?

  • wow those ignorant guitarists played in it E

  • Wow. What a beautiful Jam. Thanx for posting. :)

  • Congratulations to everyone who commented on this video, I think this is the first Youtube video I've ever seen with consistently mature comments. Makes me kind of glad to be a fan of the same type of music as you guys are. But anyways, that was pretty good. Pretty boring guitar parts though. Bob's (if that's the guy who was standing up) guitar part went off-time at some parts, if I'm not mistaken. It kind of bothered me. Pretty good jam though.

  • If you're a Phish fan then you should probably know that the dude standing up is Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead considering Phish was a talentless, cheap ripoff of the Grateful Dead and Trey Anastasio is a over-hyped, musically vacuous ripoff of Jerry Garcia. Jerry has to be in his grave shaking his head mockingly at this. Payton's always great though.

  • haha yea true. just saw bob weird and ratdog at bonaroo WORD! But I'm a jazzer so phili experiment with christian mcbride, i died. what cats!

  • Hey man yea, but they dig in and it swings, and payton swings so hard that it's a sweet vid

  • Yes they all knew each other... Nicholas Payton also thanks Trey on his album, which was made years ago, Also, to the person who said "great vid, two musical greats and... nick Payton" Nicholas Payton is amazing, i am a huge Dead fan and phish, been to over 200 phish shows and about 30 Dead shows... Nicholas Payton is the new Miles Davis in my opinion, he is amazing, go check him out if he plays near you...

  • brokedickdog007....this forum took place in 2001 and trey and nick had never met before. trey invited nick that night to do some recording with him ....which happened later and ended up being part of trey's "solo album" in 2002. when did the nicholas album come out that you refer to? trust me on this....I produced this Forum, brought everyone together and was up close and personal with all the panelists throughout the evening. nick is not only a genius musician, he is a great human being.

  • Nick better have gotten payed a lot of money to play with these hacks. Tune your guitars!

  • If you can't appreciate this little song here just don't bother listening to any music at all. They were holding back obviously

  • yeah it's funny as hell- it's like we was sizing `em up for the first two minutes and then said, "fuck it- I'll show these crackers what's what.." hah! And guess what- I'm a total DEADHEAD! If you look at bob and trey's "feet" when they were tapping out the beats, the taps weren't "together"- they are from two different styles...

  • good stuff.

It's called playing with respect. Anyone notice how they aren't "talking" over each other?....they're taking turns in a conversation.

    Trey's playing his custom Martin.

  • Probably not great because Bob seems to be leading. The other 2 look like they're kind of just thinking, "Hmm, where is this going? NOwhere? Okay..."

  • don't get me wrong, i love phish and i love the dead, but this was one terrible performance. the trumpet was really nice though

  • Whats the story behind weir's guitar? It looks alot like Trey's custom languedec electrics.

  • great vid, two musical greats and... nick payton

  • wow wonderful bob weir is such a genius and the other two performed very well

  • Of course they put it in a key that's easy for guitarists, but terrible for trumpet players. We always get screwed in this situation. >_< =P

  • Yeah, but Nicholas could have played the trumpet F# minor blues scale which only has two sharps.

  • very nice...thanks for posting

  • Now i am taking nothing away from Peyton, he is a living legend. What i am saying however is that you need to get your facts straight before you go around making claims such as that. Instead of discrediting other artists by making claims which apply to all musicicans, focus on the music and the fact that these three amazing artists are playing together and making something that has never been played before that way, and never will be again.

  • Saying that only "jam band" musicians are drug addicts and do not work on their craft is very wrong. The sad fact is that almost all musicians fall into the world of drug use, with very few talented exceptions.

  • Look not further than Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, or Thelonious Monk, clearly some of the most influential jazz artists ever. All of them were hard drug users at at least one point in their lives, and they all had their demons.

  • There's a huge difference between jazz artists and "popular" artists: musicianship. Peyton can come into these guy's world as seen in this video and make them sound like a million bucks.

  • If you do nto believe that these two phenomenal musicicans do not relentlesly study their craft than you need to get your facts straight. Both of these bands rely heavily on improvisation which is one of hte most important elements of jazz. Also, if you are saying that jazz artists work all teh time and have no play then you are also very wrong.

  • Imagine if either guitar player sat in on a jazz gig. I'm pretty sure they'd get laughed off the stage. I'm not saying either genre is better than the other, but there's a huge difference between relentlessly studying/practicing/analyzing your craft to become a better musician and getting high with your buddies and writing a few songs to jam out to.

  • trey has played jazz gigs before, and has collaborated with former members of sun ra's band, herbie hancock, and others. hes studied jazz, and hes written jazz. hes versed in both jazz and classical composition (blending the two with rock instrumentation), and has relentlessly studied/practiced/analyzed his craft. just because his band is known for jamming doesn't take away from his musicianship.

  • I love the Dead and like Phish, but Nicholas Peyton is in a whole other league. He is the best trumpeter in New Orleans, and that's saying quite a lot! Tremendous talent!

  • These guys had never met each other before this night. This whole thing was totally spontaneous, no prep, but that's what Nicholas Payton does and he can really play the horn like no one else. Trey loved his playing so much that he recorded some songs with him after this. Has anyone heard those recordings??

  • they had never met each other??? I thought that this was after Bobby played with Phish at the Shoreline around '99, and I thought that Nicholas Payton had played on Trey's first solo album>>>>???? Where did you hear that this was their first meeting????

  • I'm not sure about Bobby playing with Phish in '99, but Trey and Nicholas had never met before this night and Bobby and Trey appeared to have never hung out before. I created this Forum, invited all the panelists, and was with them all day and night. Trey asked Nicholas to do some sessions with him backstage at The Forum. Hope this helps.

  • hmm... i'd have to say that Jerry, not Bobby, was the king of noodling. Especially later 80's and 90's

  • about the noodling, bobby is quite the noodler. dont get me wrong, i love the dead but jerry kept the jams solid. ratdog even has shows where the whole band cant sync up and its a big noodle-fest, other days they can be real on. its hit or miss.
