@danielthepokefreak I think it's more that Aerith's death and (I guess) Tidus' fading are just a given at this point. Top scenes vids should have a disclaimer saying "+Aerith's death+Tidus leaving" so they wouldn't need to show them anymore.
Another good one is from FFVI, Ceres trying to commit suicide after you've played her last few days in a hut and everything around her has died, so she gives up. Too bad 16-bit doesn't translate well to these videos. Still, heavy.
I'm not sure if anyone would agree with me (mainly because not as many people were into this game or even knew much about it until SSBM), but the many deaths of characters from Fire Emblem games i think is sad, I also think the death of Arthas Menethil (A.K.A The Lich King of the Scourge) is very sad, and I think FF deaths should stop being put into these videos seperately, there have been a lot of traedies throughout th series, and I've only ever seen 2 of them in these saddest game moment vids

@SidDisco I want to point out that you apparently did not playthrough FF 7, if you did, you would know that the Lifestream is what saved the planet, not Aerith's Materia, they thought that her Materia was Holy, but they were wrong, Cloud states this at the end of the game.

@Meganimanic you probably didnt play the game when it first came out and that was the best graphics at the time....it was sad as hell when you boosted your Aeris character with the best shit, and then they just took her away like that...the video doesn't show the saddest part either where cloud is holding her body and lowers her into the water..then again I was like 12 when I played it but I still get a lump in my throat thinking about that part

I remember having this long talk with my friends like someone actually died, and if you talked to anyone who played the game their whole mood would change if you brought that up..Ive never seen anything like it, even till this day.

The only other game that was able to do that around that time was Silent Hill on PSX, of course that emotion was extreme fear. When a company succeeds in bringing out emotion you normally reserve for real life situations, you know they made a quality product.

The main reason that part of the game was so powerful was because MANY people used Aeris to keep their party alive, and they could sympathize with her.. who couldn't love her, she had one of the kindest, sweetest personalities, she was poor, and all she wanted to do was good. Once players realized she wasn't coming back, that brought emotion like no other game. Square truly made history then. FF7 did to me with emotion what Silent Hill did to me with terror. Amazing games.

Reading through these comments, clearly few here have played Mother 3.
If you combine the sadness of all of these events together, it wouldn't even add up to half of what Mother 3 brings to the player. It is not simply sadder, but deeper in every social/political and philosophical way possible. Every moment in that game has an intellectual meaning behind it to make it much more than "an innocent girl being killed" or what have you.
Please US games fail at making emotional bonds with characters, therefore the scenes are not sad and actually quite pathetic. Take ICO or SOTC or FF for example, those games actually make you care what happens to the characters. Not this GAYLO or COD bullshit.
I beg to differ, partially. You're half right, you're using bad examples. Very Few FF games actually make you care for their characters. FFX deserved to make this list, but not so high. FFVII did not, as the devellopment was almost non existant, the characters were far too shallow to make you give a crap and it was badly handled.
If you want a genuinely sad scene, try searching for "A dream Interrupted" in Valkyria Chronicles, and if you can, the scene after it.

The saddest i came across in my opinion *the ones i came across* is in world in conflict when bannon stays behind to die in the nuke i was like "dammit bannon why dont you let me leave my troops behind so you dont die!!!"
All of you arguing that somehow an ending to modern warfare was sadder than any of these obviously hasn't played these games. FINALLY! Someone who agrees that Kingdom Hearts ending is sad xD My dad walked in on my crying at the end, laughed, and walked out.. *sigh* They just don't understand.. And Final Fantasy X? Easily the saddest moment in game history.. I can't even watch this video without crying, haha.

The kingdom heart's ending is not sad..It's more..Emotionnal. You cry. Of the..Too much emotion. The boss death is REALLY REALLY sad. A so charismatic woman..I make twenty minutes tu shoot her.. And now, i still regret to have doing this.Gray fox had a beautiful death..His last words are always in the heart of the players. Tidus goes..Damn. He was my little favorite with auron.

I don't want to be hated but KH and FF are overrated. They are games that have confusing story lines. I mean WTF Donald and Goofy in an anime game? Walt Disney would go robocop and destroy Square Enix.

All of you arguing that somehow an ending to modern warfare was sadder than any of these obviously hasn't played these games. These games had a thing called "character development" that made you really care for the characters, and gave you a true emotional response instead of the "oh no ghost died i r sad and angry ololol"

but chances are you haven't played it, and chances are you would love it, so I'll give a shout-out to mother 3... its JP only, but with an outstanding fan translation it makes for the saddest video-game ever made, as it is a game that doesn't include a "sad scene" but it in itself quite a tragedy.

The 2 saddest moments i´ve ever seen on video games are these 2:
1. Splinter cell conviction: when Sam kills his best friend and then he knows that his friend (lambert) was potecting sarah (sam´s daughter).
2.Cod mw2: When sheperd betrays roach and ghost and kill and burn them.
