Of course, if we could all get paid to be wrong...damn weatherman...LOL:) I get anxious too, because I watch these seedlings grow since March and I want to get them in the ground. I realize it's me...I just can't wait to smell the dirt and play in it. I'm sending you patience...can u feel it? LOL:)
yeah, I learned the hard way about hardening my plants... 2 years in a row! I had great seedlings that really shot up and looked fantastic, but I didn't know what hardening was... so I would transplant them outside, and then they pretty much all died... Good thing I learned from my mistake early in the season last year, and I was able to just put the seeds directly in the dirt in time to grow stuff!
So, if I have a wide enough and deep enough container, you think I could grow potatos in the winter time all the way through to maturity rather than just start in January to start them? how deep would you say they need to grow potatos?
Your videos are giving me too many ideas and i want to try them all! It's awesome! I have several plants in my sunroom already! Can't wait to grow more! Thanks for the info!
@TheSkadooshMove You could grow taters in a container if you have enough room for them to develop but from all that I've seen of other gardeners, the harvest is substantially less. They require very rich soil and more water than some other plants due to the potato-making aspect. It can definitely be done though. I would plant them low in a pot and build the soil around the stems as they grow. This will definitely help.
dude, your halarious and informative. i am soooo jealous of your gardens...You try lots of different things that give me ideas..anyways i really Dig...llolol gardening and getting into this youtube stuff..keep posting man..jedijohnny
@jedijohnny Thanks for tuning in JediJohnny. I try to be serious but I always seem to fall back into being myself.........which is rarely serious and a bit scatterbrained. :)
saved hybrid seeds means you get either the mother or father that combined to make the hybrid. You can see the genetic diversity in the tomato plants you show here.
well here it is going into winter again love watching these shows it makes the winter blues a little easyer to handel lol ty Ray for making them and teaching me some new things my pinapple didn't make it i don't know what i did lol but i do have 4 avacotes trees that are 3ft tall that i started in the spring
@bobinmissouri Sorry your pineapple didn't make it. Sometimes that happens. Even one of mine died. I had three. Two survived, so that's pretty cool. I'm doing an avacado experiment. The results should be uploaded in a couple weeks or so. Green growing things inside definitely helps me stay sane in the winter. :)
If your not to far north, you can proply direct seed them, like i do. Its a lot easier cuz i was never that good at harden things off -- cuz you have to bring them in and out, for like two weeks daily and i have a lot of vegables, lol.
@cootiebooboo I wouldn't plant them that deep. I'd plant them so they're a little deeper than they were in the pot. A couple inches of stem buried is what I do.
For starting seeds and growing plants indoors, I use about 2/3 pure compost and 1/3 peat moss. It's pretty rich, but the new plants go crazy and grow fast in it. Alos you don't have to add any fertilizer at all while they're growing inside. :)
awsome, well i will definatly try that. i will let you know how it goes next year if you like. just wish i could move more north. hopefully very soon. keep up the great video's it has been very helpful. Give me a good laugh too.
ok i got to ask you.. i have heard keep all your seeds in a freezer. and i have heard fridgerator, or in a cool dry location. now in my cool dry location being the garage it gets really really cold is there any kind of seeds that you do not keep in the cold? where do you keep your seeds? and do the fruit seeds keep well in a cold location. cold meaning my garage probably gets as cold as outside and right now is getting about 25 degrees or lower at night.
I've heard that keeping them in the fridge in an airtight container such as a jar with a lid is the best idea. I don't disagree with that. I personally just toss mine in a ziplock baggie, push out the air and toss the ziplock in a padded envelope in my desk. LOL I know it's totally not the right way but the seeds never seem to mind. They're tougher than people give them credit for.
i did that too had it sitting at the top of my closet in ziplock bags which is what it came in and then in the yellow padded envelope they were shipped in as well. I then put them in my seed box (a cardboard box) i had them in my closet. but was thinking that was not cool enough for them so i put them in the garage. i have several delivery packages of many seeds :) Im not sure if it will hurt them any getting that cold then warm. i may put them in the fridge to keep them a regular temp.
Hello! Speaking of back ups, I have been seed trading.
I have two different varieties of lettuce. I think I
will try container gardens... Practically all my plants died except the scarlet runner beans are doing better... Oh well... I don't think I will grow in Jiffy next year. Found an earthworm in my garden today.
Container gardens would be pretty easy and also would give you the time to build up your garden soil for another attempt in a couple years or so. It's always a learning process and alot of mistakes and successes......but it's just so much fun. By the way, almost all of my tomatoes in the earlier videos died from two late frosts after this video. I felt bad for a bit. Then I went to the nursery and bought a couple and had a coke and enjoyed the day planting them. :)
They're called "Hybrid Bush Pickle". I prefer pickling cukes because they seem to taste better to me. I pick them when they're itty bitty and eat them skin and all. Ok, now I went and done it.............I'm hungry AGAIN! :(

Excellent tips. I have a question. Can you take seeds from a pepper bought at the grocery store and plant them straight away or do they need to "cure" first? Or do they do something to them so they won't grow at all?
Bookhound63, as far as I know you can definitely grow pepper plants from seeds of peppers you buy in the store. I recommend drying the seeds a week or so and then planting them. This discourages mold from decaying the seed. You don't need to cure the seeds though. YYou want to be sure to use very ripe peppers though. I tried growing peppers from seeds I saved from peppers that were not quite fully ripe and none of them sprouted. Pepper seeds are a bit finicky sometimes.
Wow, great videos! I just started my very first vegetable garden. I'm near Montreal, Quebec in Canada though...so I started all my plants indoors a few months ago and now I am starting to plant outside... I *think* it's because of a cool spring and too much rain but sometimes you just never know. I'm planting sweet corn this year for the first year in a while and so far it looks good.
I love sweet corn! Gurney's catalog sells a brand called "Gotta have it" hybrid corn. The cool thing about it is it's short season, puts out decent sized ears AND keeps for a week or more in the fridge and stays as fresh and sweet as the day it was picked. That's AMAZING!
