Sums up everything I LOVE about Anthony Jackson, creative, tasteful, thoughtful and incredibly musical, so aware and in tune with his surroundings. Great solo and I'll take THAT kind of rare bass solo any day over ANY of these bass speed-shredders who constantly play fast but have NOTHING to say musically. BRAVO AJ!!!!
One thing I find so fascinating about Jacson are the little, but important things..like going through his career sitting down..literally. I've never seen the man play standing. I remember reading it in an interview though, but cant remember the reason he stated. Its so admirable. Having the courage to stick with the way you do things, no matter what.
This video is important only for what happens starting at 5:40...to hear Anthony Jackson take a bass guitar solo, something he very rarely does. Radically different from anything Jaco or Stanley would do back then. Not very flashy, but nteresting nontheless...
@catboyzee123 Anthony Jackson has a completely different approach to the bass guitar which is more classical music based than literally any other player. In my opinion - to successfully pull this type of improvisation off on any other instrument would be amazing, to pull it off on a bass guitar is ASTOUNDING. It's like J.S. Bach turned up on the bandstand, grabbed a bass and started grooving!
anthony jackson is a consummate bassist, unique because he sounds like anthony jackson.People have it wrong when they believe you have to sound like someone they admire such as jaco etc,to be great.Individuality is ones greatness
@dreadtodred Wow you put that just so perfectly :) Well said, and I needed to remember that at a time when I feel I am finding my own true identity as a bassist, and not worry about what other peoples ideas are. Its scary, yet liberating. Well said :)
@jlebesis thanks!!yeah it is scary .Im a bassist who went through a period, thinking I have to emulate and not create my own ideas. We muscians are our worst enemy sometimes putting so much stress on each other to sound like alike, peace!
Anthony Jackson is really playing bass, instead of playing on a bass. His approach is unique. He is a little bit overlooked, but this man is a true master.
Anthony Jackson can solo??!! WTH!! I have his first album (released 2010) & even there, he doesn't take one single solo! I NEVER thought he could solo. I just stood up & cheered when I saw this.
@jazzbutterworth He's played plenty of solos in his career, recorded and live, but he's very humble about it. In interviews he's expressed his disdain for them yet he seems to enjoy himself when he is asked to. One of the earliest ones I know of (and own) is on the B side of the Buddy Rich/Lionel Hampton album "Transition."
Monsieur Anthony jackson un des grand homme de la musique du 20 ème siècle, c'est tout simplement inimaginable un tel solo avec une métrise total dans l'improvisation et l'harmonie, un grand moment de la musique, merci!!! Anthony
My goodness!! This is so inspiring!! There is soo much to learn from this! The looks on everyone's faces and the reaction from the audience is PRICELESS!!
This is not the same footage from the official recording. It's another evening. Great to see it though, AJ killing it no matter when or where or on what bass!
why they look at him like "wtf are you doing, KID?"

He plays seated because he thinks that having the bass against him change the sound of the instrument.
