What a great moment. I saw the original the day after the opening and this number made me ache with laughter. Lansbury is so unique and has a stage presence I have only seen matched by Julie Andrews.
Yes, THIS is Mrs. Lovett!! I agree, the video/dvd you can buy/rent is the best! That one was filmed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion (L.A. Music Center) during the show's extended run there with Angela Lansbury and George Hern. Even though Len Cariou created the roll for Broadway, for me George is the definitive Sweeny Todd.
I saw the first dress rehearsal of this production. When Lansbury was wheeled out on this unit and sang this song, the audience went coo-coo! She was absolutely exactly on beat on the first night for an almost impossible song to deliver. It was dead on from the get go. The whole production was stunning from start to finish. One of those moments in theater that can't be forgotten. I can't say that this illegal filming is kosher, but what a great live moment to capture!
@millie73 i have the dvd as well. Sweeney is George Hearn on the DVD I swear I watch that thing everyday and the new movie and even the broadway revival does not come close to this wonderful version
That is definitely Len Cariou in this video.
