I think its 2 seperate issues corporal punishment by parenst versus by non parents. I can understand parents having the option but I dont want teachers or neighbours hitting my children. As well, there is a difference between having the right to do somethign and if its the right thing to do or best thing to do. It always seems that we use hititng for control more than disciplne. It is this attitude of breaking the person's will or toughening them up. But is that really the best solution?

There are other ways to discipline children/adults. Caning/smacking is an absolutely disgraceful, and unneccessary humiliation that should have been ruled out a long time ago.

I have three children, three very active, outgoing girls, so I know what it is like to have those moments where a parent feels like smacking their children, and has smacked them. I smacked my eldest once and still regret it. I wish I could have used another method to teach her, because hitting really is wrong.

Hi deriseis14, good to hear from you. I have a cousin here who went to boarding school and they had a special room for punishment. He told me he was there so many times the "dean of discipline" said they should have named the room after him. He used to be punished by being bent over a gym balancing beam and whipped with a short strap. You had to count out the strokes and say "thank you, sir." Makes you want to take the strap and give the dean a taste of his own medicine!

You had to "fag" for an older student in the 1960's England. My cousin was whipped once when he drew his "masters" bath and the master said the water was not hot enough. As much as I disliked Margaret Thatcher, she did away with "fagging" when she became prime minister.

the problem is that shows and movies such as this make depict corporal punishment to be bad thing, when in reality it was efficient throughout history. Now the government prefers to send them to prison rather than let their parents and schools educate them while they are still young.
