  • True about Jack, but he's the best I've ever seen. Remember that this was early AM, just after The Who finished.

  • Casady was, is, and will always be The Man..

  • Hot Tuna cooks

  • Spencer ♥ *sigh* They dont make em like that anymore. Lovely fella he was. Bless him.

  • @NoRosesForMe You personally knew him?!

  • @TPBXDRicky420 Awww haha! Nooo course not. I can only WISH I was around in those daze to know him. (Spencer) Wow....that wouldve been....wow....♥

  • @NoRosesForMe PS...he was just lovely ya know? Marty too.

  • @NoRosesForMe I totally agree. That sure would have been crazy! :)

  • Do away with people blown' my mind

Most of the sound quality from Woodstock I've heard before was funky at best, this one is great!

  • at 4.38 satanic black meal guy

  • at 3.53 psychedelic metal stoner

  • 2:49 sexy !!!

  • It was not all about Slick..loved her but Marty was !!!

  • Anybody know what was playing in the theater that day?

    '

  • 2:42 SWASTIKA

  • @mpjgbx Yes. But remember, thats not a nazi swastika. The nazi one is always at a 45 degree angle. The one he's wearing here is facing to the right. It is a religious symbol used by Hindus, and I also think Vikings used it as a good luck amulet. (btw Jorma is Jewish)

  • @apocatie34 It is also a Hebrew symbol

  • @apocatie34 the Navajo people used a swastika like symbol for generations until WW2 and the Nazi hell came along. When all that came about- the Navajo people wrote/ signed a promise ( a real written promise on paper,,,Ive seen it) and it stated that they would never again use their symbol for anything. It is similar to the swastika. Very similar. But for the sake of the Jews and all who were murdered they have never again used that symbol. Fact. And I think its lovely of them.Jorma is lovely too

  • @mpjgbx We already had a discussion about this.

  • This band had amazing timing, singing, soul, musicianship, everything. They were absolute genious, you know you're good when your music is timeless. Only when you rise above your own times can you excel tto that legacy. I'm neglecting names, they were perfect as a sum, a collective talent and uniqueness, you can't compare them to any other band. Any body who tries, is petty. I wonder how strung out these guys were at the time.

  • FASTER SPENCER, FASTER!!!!

  • this is great i am really upset they took off Saturday afternoon and the other side of this life they were the best versions in my opinion.

    damn copyright!

  • I'm pretty sure I've seen a promo pic for the Quicksilver Messenger Service with the "Devil Horns" that predates the guy at 3:50.

  • Pretty hot performance. Spencer really propels this thing. Vocals are ragged but, then, when faced with a runaway train you just hold on as best you can.

  • this is what music should soun like

my genration sucks we need ,ore groups like the airplaine safe trip every one

  • Love it. That whole album was epic.

  • Jorma at 3:54 is in the zone and then snaps out of it, it's like when someone comes to from a day dream. In an interview he said it's better for him to not wear his glasses on stage and that it's all a psychedelic blur, I think this totally helps him focus when improvising a solo. Most players close their eyes to get to that "zone". I know because I tend to do the same blank stare when I solo..it's like shutting off the visual part of your brain and being totally into the music.Like a trance.

  • @FrequentlyFried Either that or he was ready to stop soloing and go back into the structure of the song and checking in with his bandmates right?

  • a esa mina le entro como churrasco de croto

  • I love his voice, but Marty has quite a Charles Manson thing working

  • I was born in the wrong century...damn fate!

  • Comment removed

  • That guy at 3:50 is EPIC

  • yup i seen paul and marty not long ago ja is my fav

  • that was the most awesome thing ive ever seen

  • @bsbobber THAT was rock and roll music, man. And those dudes are still making music - and they're 70 years old!

  • holy crap!!!!!!!

  • Where is all this footage of the Airplane from Woodstock that I see on Youtube but is not on the Woodstock DVD? Thanks and great song by an amazing group.

  • I told you it wasn't Oswald. Now who can travel that fast in a crowded

downtown area. Unless it was Mercury.

  • WHY wasn't this in the movie? This would have been an interesting addition-showing the fatigue & stress experienced by both the performers & audience.

  • WHY wasn't this in the movie?

  • God. I love this song. Best song on "Surrealistic Pillow"

  • Never seen this before. Did ya catch that Jack blew his entrance at 1:03 - and everybody else slid in right behind him, without a second's hesitation? That's what JA could do onstage - get lost, and found again, in a heartbeat.

Know I love this, baby - yes I do.

  • @audadvnc I noticed that. Awesome pickup by the Airplane!

  • @audadvnc That's what happens when a band knows how to navigate the sometimes unannounced, uncharted seas of improvisation.

  • WooooooooooooW

    Yeah Yeah...

    Only, Only, Only... Very Nice...

  • Casady's the FRIGGIN MAN!!

  • I would totally do Grace Slick......God she was so HOT!!!

  • @versatom70

I think all us guys watching this would

  • @versatom70 - Why not do Grace Slick - everybody else did!

  • Of no importance, but...from 3:49 to 3:54 some dude in the audience is flashing the horns -- didn't know that was going on at rock shows as early as '69. Or maybe he was just a UT fan.

  • @cbreaden or from houston

  • I am a longtime Airplane fan and it pains me to say it, but this is an embarrasing

mess.Except for Spencer they seem so fucked up that they can hardly get through the song. The Woodstock versions of Volunteers and Saturday Afternoon by contrast are terrific. From what I've heard and seen over the years, the airplane were hit or miss live. When they fired on all cylinders though, they were fantastically powerful and adventursome.

  • @ORELUR perhaps not the tightest version of 3/5's of a mile in 10 seconds, but for sheer exuberance this is one awesome video !

  • @ORELUR Not a mess, man...just live rock music. IMO, this kicks ass! FWIW, they were truly performing under duress that day. And Jorma was, well, Jorma - smokin'. Anyway, never be another band like this, or a time like that was.

  • I love this! They were one of my favorite performances at Woodstock!

  • This is Woodstock!

  • Tight version.

  • 1/2 of these kids became doctors and lawyers,,LOL

  • Jack looks cool

  • At 3:55, if you look behind Jorma, it looks like some guy with glasses has been hung.

  • Jim Morisson is one lucky bastard

  • What does ' three fiths of a mile ' refer to ?

  • @rabinski

I believe it refers to speed. "Sometimes it's priced at 65 dollars. Prices like that will make a grown man holler. Especailly when sold by a kid who's only fifteen years old"

  • @windowsillmusic No it refers to the price of a kilo weed at the time. Jefferson Airplane only did the good drugs :P or maybe not.

  • hes wearing a swastika around his neck hahaha...

  • @AlDroog A "swastik," not "swastika." A swastik is a good luck symbol and is positioned the way Jorma is wearing it. On the other hand, a swastika is rotated 90 degrees.

  • @Lisica2008

actually technically they are one in the same regardless of how its rotated. the symbol is ancient and was believed to be a powerful symbol to wield in war granting the army bearing the swastika military dominance and then later come to be a sign of good luck and then a sign of mass destruction. horrible how humans can skew ideas as simple as symbols

  • @derekgiannone Thanks for the info.

  • @Lisica2008

    wrong dude...

its a award of honour service of the SS...and hes wearing it to tease... its the crooked cross with that circle of plants and within the circle runes of the SS...

  • @AlDroog No it isn't. It doesn't have the wreath that you would see on the Waffen SS service medal. No doubt it was a comment on the political shit that was going on, and it probably was a German Nazi artifact, they were like arrowheads at the time. You know, you could ask Jorma.

  • @msspi764

ht tp:/ /img 31.im ages hack. us/img31/3286/ordenvorder .jpg here see by ourself...

  • @AlDroog ..O SHIT I NEVER NOTICED THAT BEFORE. THATS ONE BADASS MOFUCKER

  • Bass player is really good...

  • They shoulda played at 2 am. not 9 am.!! everyone is zoned!

  • This is my favorite version of "3/5 of a Mile."

  • @Lisica2008 The roaring engine of the airplane!

  • Love how passionately Marty is singing.

    Spencer's drumming is brilliant too!

  • What a band..

  • "Yes son grandpa is baked but it was cool in those days"

  • marty balin is soooooo stoned.

  • Marty Balin :)

  • Marty is so baked!

  • The Woodstok performance of the Jefferson Airplane was messy, but really great!

  • that is Nicky Hopkins on keyboards

  • Jorma took the hell out of that fucking wha wha guitar

  • Is that Nicky Hopkins on the keyboards? Sure looks like him.

  • @daleahill yes he is!

  • @daleahill

    yes, he's nicky!

  • Who's the blonde woman sitting between Grace and Spencer?

  • The king of bassists is seen patiently waiting at 0.56 and then joins at 1.02. He and Spencer created an unique rhythm section. Almost jazzy. They had few peers at their peak.

  • WestLAGuy

    Jethro Tull were English.

  • 2:43

  • is this on the woodstock DVD?

  • Those were the good old days. If someone told me then I'd be 60 years old with two kids, a dog and a minivan I never would have believed it.

  • A Truly unique band. In fact, consider coming out of San Francisco the different sounds involved with The Airplane, The Dead, Steve Miller and Country Joe and The Fish: then add in from my home town The Doors, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young, then Sly and The Family Stone, The Stones, Jethro Tull, Hendrix and Santana...OK, I think I've made my point, but the Airplane occupies a special place in my mind and they were something.

  • LOVE Jack's outfit!

  • Spencer was a fantastic, under-appreciated drummer. He was just right for the Airplane; very original style. Sorry Joey Covington!

  • lol anyone spot the swasi?

  • @slosh77

Jorma got that from a Navajo craftmaker... that particular tribe used it as a symbol for the unity of the universe loooonnnngggg before the nazi party tainted it. I believe the greeks also used it for a symbol of good luck or something along those lines.

  • far out!

  • Not simply live. But Woodstock live. ;-)

  • Wow!

  • marty may be drunk but he's still beautiful

  • Could you get any higher? lol

  • the entire band is tripping their asses off

  • name of dhe rummer????

  • @MetaKnight0o0 Spencer Dryden

  • this is the real airplane - not the album - fantastic

  • This sound is so marvelous and sincere that it will be played forever, all generations will admire and appreciate it

  • omg ...i cant believe i have ever seen this

  • Shame you can't see Paul, other than this it's pretty much perfect.

  • Jorma's Gibson ES 335 has an unique TEXTURE. KILLER SOUND!!

  • Never seen this clip before - Spencer Dryden was such a great, unique drummer. Ahright, Jorma's got his wah-wah thang going. But this performance is pretty disorganized - too fast, too drugged up. Later in the set they were all heading the same direction.

  • Jack looks so disheveled and awesome at the same time!

  • @threefive00 yeah even Martin

  • @threefive00 Yggdrasil Bass

  • @mrmott44

I could never tell, but it is in the jefferson airplane's book.

  • @threefive00 elegantly wasted is how he looks IMO

  • one of the best jorma's solos i ever seen

  • This proved they could get on down and play Swamp music. When these guys locked in a groove they were as good as anyone, and with terrific vocal assults too. Smoking! Oh, that I am too.

  • @jakeenan: It's funny how one tends to gravitate toward this kind of video when one is smoking.

  • @jezmundberserker The stoner road leads back to this JA gig, dude. I've read these cats were up 2 days drinking & smoking (not Grace, she had a kip & got dressed) & still came out & did this with their eyes half-closed. I play some of this cd most days in the car & dip in for the visuals of the 7 songs quite a bit too. And I've heard the whole gig was filmed & the rest of it is in the Warners vault. Bummer.

It's a hot mess. Total classic. It had everything. Think I'll wrap up another now!

  • @jakeenan: As a guitar player, it's all about Jorma's tone. So great! I agree it''s a bummer they haven't released the whole JA gig. I've played my Jimi Hendrix double-dvd set so many times. I also love Country Joe and the Fish's "Love" from Woodstock. Such a great tune. It also proves Barry Melton's a great singer.

  • The swastika is an ancient germanic symbol for the sun.

  • @thechewydude The swastika is actually an old sanskrit symbol used throughout India in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. Although you're right it is considered to be a symbol of the sun or a representation of eternity in Buddhism.

  • Haha,Grace in the beginning 0:02

    So fuckin' cool.;)

  • YGGDRASIL BASS !!!!!!!

  • Is there anyone, who doesn't love their music? I don't think so! The best band in the world! Irreplaceable!!!

  • Wicked wicked bass. Mr. Casady is on fire ( with a little help from Spencer )

  • yeah..playin this hard at daybreak.....saaaweeet! Go Jack!

  • Anybody not think the JA could rock? This SNARLS!

  • Look at Skip Spence go on those drums!

  • @JimmyPage968

it's actually spencer dryden, but yes, this song has quite bad ass drumming. :)

  • Jorma wore the symbol because it had significance in Indian religion. Being a Jewish himself, he has recently admitted in an interview that it was a "dumbass thing to do".

  • @threefive00

It's about time he wised up. ; )

  • Fuck the Cunt nazis ,i hope all nazis get cancer and die the cunts they are.

  • @qsergyuko that's not the Nazi version of the swastika. this is the original version.

  • hippy-head-beatnik weirdo stuff.

  • your momma, bitch

  • go watch some baseball bitch, get your thumb out of your ass

  • the swastika was a buddhist simbol before it was basterdized by Hitler

  • @tonyvegas13

Do you know where the swastika originated?

Hint: Not the Nazi's. It is a good luck symbol.

  • bad thing the nazis fucked that up

  • @tonyvegas13 hitler used it to make people think he was bringing good, which he did until 1937, im not a nazi btw, but its a hindu sign for good luck

  • Good ol' sleepy eyed Marty!!!

  • omg look this bass at 1:01 ! i can feel it shaking my soul man

  • the announcer comment doesnt go with this song. There were about 3 hours between the who and the airplane. The song is the third they played. The comment DOES go with the film of grace sitting on stage. Editor just added bonus material so we could see Grace sitting on stage.

  • Thank you for your informative response. And Editor, thank you also.

  • Does anyone know the announcer says," We will continue with Jefferson Airplane" at the beginning of this video? Rain? Why did they go on so late(early)?

  • I meant to say, Does anyone know why the announcer says they are continueing? Was it a rain delay? Why did they go on 9 hours late?

  • Considering they stayed up all night, Airplane is pretty energetic here. Shame the crowd couldn't reciprocate. (That's Nickey Hopkins peering over his keyboards btw.)

  • The bearded man with long hair who is drinking on 0:43 also appears on the 1968 rooftop concert in New York, am I right?? Check it out. He appears dancing in that video

  • @jguido93 A roadie perhaps?

  • He must be so, what a life!!

  • 3:50 ... And Dio was the first to do the maloik?

  • fantastic video

  • Jorma is Jewish. But if you go back in history, the swastica was also used for many other reasons.

  • @RulerOfRock666 actually he's wearing it because it was Finland's symbol in 1910.

  • @JimmyPage968 really?

  • @keo774 yes really

  • @JimmyPage968

    ah

    thanks!

  • @JimmyPage968

In Italy, that symbol meant for several decades the eternity of life, but then became a nazi symbol.

  • @keo774 yeah the nazis bastardized the original.

  • @JimmyPage968

In fact during the word war, in Tuscany some poor and unschooled people looked at those symbols and thought they were in a nazist area.

  • Good Lord how cool !....and how utterly wrong that this was kept from their fans for decades!!

  • whoaaa wow amazing

  • that blonde by grace in the beginning is sexy

  • she was spencer´s wife

  • After Grace.

    And an ex-groupie.
