driving long distances means you can select a higher approach club (and thus have more control on your approaches). I'm a weekend hacker and I know myself Id rather approach with a 9 than a 6 or 7 purely from knowing the 9 will stop on a dime, the 6 or 7 will pitch and roll (sometimes thats good) but more often than not i want the ball to stop where I placed it. just my 2cents worth... long-ass drives do have their place! :)

Hey, I know several guys who can hit their drives 300+ yds. That doesn't mean they're great. Some of them can't hit their irons and wedges at all, and a couple of them can't chip or putt to save their lives. They either duff their approaches or 3-4 putt. All they do is hit drivers on the range and it shows. I am their foil. I can hit my wedges and irons well, and I can putt well. I just have a tough time getting off the tee. I find myself using a 5 or 7 wood. Which i still ain't that good with.

Well, first thing's first. The length of the backswing has little to no significance to how well or far you hit. Take Arney Palmer. His BS is considerably short, and he hit the ball very well. What is improtant is that you get the club into the 'slot'. Which is basically the area before and after impact when the club is parallel to the ground. You do that and you'll be well off. As for what makes you hit far, proper timing and wrist break, along with a full hip turn can do wonders for distance.

its important to learn how to hit your driver becasue when you do everything else becomes so much easier. if you can hit you 3 wood 230 you can hit your driver 270. that can be the difference between a 4 iron or an 8 iron for an amatuer golfer. trust me just go to the range and learn how to hit all kinds of different shots with your driver. then hititng it well becomes easy. youll notice a huge difference in confidence with it which makes the club more succesful. it will lower your scores.

Plus, you don't really need it unless you play long par 4's. If so, just use a long iron or a hybrid to hit the green and play from there. all in all, a driver isn't that critical in your golf bag

ok Nick. I have a couple of things that may help. If you are tall make sure you have a wider stance and the club is further away from you. When driving (I am going by he idea you are right handed golfer here) the ball should be in line with your left heel.when you have the club rested behind the ball. the top of your club should be about a foot away from yourself. make sure your knees are bent when swinging. when you do this you should hopefuly realise that your wrists are not as loose.

It is your wrists that generates the speed of the club. Where the ball goes however is your timing of the turning of the hands at the moment of impact (slice is too slow turn, hook is too fast), and how the club comes at the targetline (inside-out starts right, outside-in starts left).

My local pro gave me two tips which cured an evil left to right hook. Turn your left hand around on the shaft so you can see more of the glove. And set the ball from your left heel but keep your head in the centre at all times. KNocked 5 stokes off my game easy.

Lately I can not hit a good drive. I'm around 8-13 handicap. I can hit my irons and everything just fine. But when i try to hit a driver or any kind of wood, I just develop a ton of top spin and it drops. It goes about 200 yards but 150 of is spin. I can not get it into the air. If anyone can try to help me out, send me a message or something on here, thank you. (I hit a Cleveland Hibore driver, a Cleveland Launcher 15* and a Cleveland Hawkeye 5 wood with the Adila NV shaft.)

2 things u can do.. u say that u get a big draw when u hit it solid off the tee.. this happens to me to. off the ground either move the ball back in ur stance which will stop the club face rolling over causing what u THINK is a top but is just a hook not letting u get it off the ground. or u can keep exactly the same adress and swing position but open the club face.. will get it square at impact and u wont get that low hook that seems like top spin that i get sometimes. open club or ball back :)

Hi, i'm not as good as your caliber at golf, i am currently playing off a 18 handicap.

This may seem weird considering i'm 15, giving you advice, but it works for me.

Some tips i have been told by friends and family are:

Eye on the ball

Feet parallel to shoulders

Interlock grip (I prefer)

Relaxation, and calm.

Most importantly, especially when i am putting is to hold my grip very lightly. I'd say mine is about 5/10. You feel the swing and club more better. Remember light is right!

I have been driving the ball 300-315 yards normally with a nice draw. I just can't play golf anymore because my torn labrium is starting to bother me which happened from football..

Its important to get your swing right, the weight should come to the front leg and you should pivot your hip with a clear follow through. Never lose sight of the ball and keep the left hand as straight as possible
