Pure magic! "Lonely" is actually my favorite song on this album. RN 1814 is my favorite album ever released by a female artist. "Lonely" is pure magic that Janet has never come close to matching since. When the time comes that I know I'm close to dying (in old age), I'd make "Lonely" a candidate for my death song, a song I'd want to listen to in my final moments. It's that good! Thanks for sharing this classic that is actually my favorite song from one of my all-time favorite albums.

@kenyancheena that's a nice theory. But the tone is definitely more intimate than just comforting a friend. At 1:27, she whispers "Oh yeah baby. Mi amor". Mi amor means "my love". then at 3:37 she says, "love each other..." She then uses baby again several times. At 4:27 she states "like a river flows, you hurt, I'll bleed". People don't use this type of language with "just" friends. She's probably reaching out to an insecure lover, letting them know she's a friend first.
The song did get some airplay on late night "Quiet Storm" type shows especially when the album was fairly new.
Radio today wouldn't allow for the freedom of a DJ selecting a non-single to play on his show anymore. They have to abide by planned playlists which is why radio in the US sucks today.

There is a really warm, organic feeling to the instrumentation in this song. I've loved it ever since first hearing it as the B side to the Black Cat single.

finally they put this song back up. was down for a while. someone tell me why it never got a single or air play?

The song did get some airplay on late night "Quiet Storm" type shows especially when the album was fairly new.
Radio today wouldn't allow for the freedom of a DJ selecting a non-single to play on his show anymore. They have to abide by planned playlists which is why radio in the US sucks today.

@saturnday I agree and back then radio station pd's/md's were more diverse as far as music selection and allowing album cuts to receive airplay alongside the hits.

@saturnday SO SO true, which is why I love old school radio. Growing up, I heard all kinds of non-singles on the radio, usually during those quiet storm hours. Nowadays, except for old school stuff, I rarely hear anything that isn't or wasn't an official single on the radio.

@saturnday You are excatly right! Nor can a DJ break a new artist. It is all decided for you these days. Nicki Minaj has been decided,Katie Perry, Rhianna,Ke$ha, all of these artists who get by on image and packaging have been decided for the music listening public. Which is why it is all interchangeable.

This song really speaks to me right now, especially after a very difficult breakup recently. It really brings out all the emotion I didn't know I had left. Beautiful lyrics and song. A true Janet Jackson classic.

While the lyrics and JJ's vocal performance are great the music in the song is fantastic also. I love that little keyboard flourish after Janet sings "So don't isolate yourself".
There is a really warm, organic feeling to the instrumentation in this song. I've loved it ever since first hearing it as the B side to the Black Cat single.
