This piece is one of the more difficult Ornstein compositions: however, it goes beyond sustained dissonance, setting very colourful chords and clusters against rhythmically varied, repeated tone patterns and melodies in parallel major sevenths. It seems to me a composition of Gothic, religious reverence caught in an ominous, haunting, quasi-pagan atmosphere.
I'm guessing he didn't really enjoy his stay at Notre Dame.
