  • Damn it looks like this isn't even an effort to him. Best Bass Trombone I have heard by Far....

  • i play bass trombone myself but not that good

  • Felicitaciones Martin!!!! hermoso sonido e interpretacion!!! Felicitaciones una vez mas!!

  • Does anyboody know who the drummer is?

  • sounds great. but -

the piece isn't interesting. easy listening and nothing happens.

    solid oldschoolswing.

  • @karlarsch56b

This is easy to say for someone without ears and/or musical sense. No wonder nothing ever happens for you.

Maybe better stick to the easy listening stuff,

    Happy Holidays,

    BS

  • @BigSplitter ok. i make it more detailed:

it's technically outstandingly played, but i don't like music, because it's well played, but because of the idea in it. this piece is just the same 2:20min-bit played twice. its a small base-trombone gimmic. why not let him play a real tune, if they want to feature him? there is not a bit of improvisation in it.

to me its easy listening - but i admit, it's hard to find big band music that i enjoy listening.

    liebe grüße

    kalle

  • @karlarsch56b

    Hello kalle,

You made your point: easy listening might not be as easy as it seems/sounds...

I of course truly respect your opinion(s) though;-)

    Best regards,

    BS

B.t.w: this is not a small, but a very great bass-trb gimmick!

  • @BigSplitter

this for example is way more interesting:

  • @karlarsch56b

the link appears to be incomplete/broken?

    Cheers,

    BS

  • Great!! Reminds me of 1939, Carnegie Hall, Benny Goodman!!! Yahooooo!!

  • Great playing, easy and fluid.

  • What a great way to start a Saturday, I'm just sitting around in my bathrobe listening to this and relaxing. Aww yeah

  • Absolutely excellent all around!!!

  • wow what a sound

  • wow what a sound

  • A very precise and beautiful.:)

  • What kind of mouthpiece is he using?

  • @juanvaldez100

Martin is using a Thein BM mouthpiece. I`m using this type also. Plays very well!

  • Great playing.. better than on the original album as well!

  • One person is obviously an envious tenor trombone player

  • Fantastic!!!! He's one of my Trombone heroes!

  • Absolutely wonderful bass bone playing! This is what it's all about. Mr. van den Berg certainly had some nice support from Patrick Williams and that marvelous arrangement from the Sinatraland album by Pat - not to mention the superb backing of the Metropole big band!

  • this is what u get when u learn from the best!

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome playing man!! Wow!

  • This is fantastic!

  • Wat een mooi geluid! Dit is genieten.

  • I wish this was available on Dvd, and where could i get this chart?

  • @landhunterr See my comment above. Multijimbone1

  • I play tenor Bone, this makes me wanna go to bass

  • I can't believe that someone gave this a thumbs down!

  • @johnponiatowski Well it just goes to show you that not everyone knows what really GREAT playing is ;-) Just wow and <3 on my part. I play tenor but man I'd sure love to play bass too.

  • He sounds awesome! I really appreciate his great tone and style. This is an awesome chart too. As a bass trombonist whos done a lot of big band stuff I know how little there is out there that features jazz bass bone. This arrangement tastefully and intelligently allows a bass bone player to delight audiences with simple and musical beautiful playing. Martin exhibits some really great playing here, I love his sweet tone. I look forward to hearing more from him. Thanks for the upload Mr. van Dijk!

  • @bassposaunen

Very well said comment. So many times the Bass Bone has the "joke" chart written. Beautiful, artful playing!!

  • This is the best big band bass trombone video I've ever seen.

  • Was Martin's 2nd trigger broken? It was rubberbanded in place and he never used it once.

  • @brasstrombone9 He used it for the low C at 0:56. It's personal preference to use the 2nd valve for those notes, sometimes a D with 2 and with 1 trigger will sound differently; depends on the sound you want.

  • @JMR6916 Yeah it sounds brighter when you use both triggers

  • Now that I've listened to this with decent headphones) my computer speakers are terrible!), I completely agree that the string bass/bass trombone/(occasionally bari sax) doubling is really neat!

  • Fantastic video and playing. I use this in my trombone methods class for music education majors to demonstrate bass trombone. Everybody knows big band is usually just bass trombone with other musicians anyway ;-)

Thanks a lot, and I dig your other stuff, too.

  • It looks quite obvious to me that this video has been captured by professional cameramen!!

Sound also is very good (except the little sync-problems)

    Great work!!

  • Hi Ben,

    It's Ichiro Yakamatsu here.

Is that really Jan Oosting? I've heard a lot about him (he's a legend here in Japan) But he loost even rougher than i thought...

  • It seems silly to me to compare players like Martin and Phil or anybody else you wanna throw in the mix. Martin sound absolutely great here, why not just enjoy it!

Enjoy Phill when you hear him play! This is such a nice clip with a great band and beautiful playing by Martin. Thanks for sharing, Ben!!

    //Mattis

  • This is THE most outstanding bass trombone playing I've ever heard! Incredible!

  • This is amazing...

  • I was there at the concert. It's all live. No edits or overdubs. It's all Martin!

  • This is pure live played, no playback or sound editing is done after

the concert. People who attended this great performance will agree on

this. I only had some problems with ripping the track into iMovie.

That made this little synchronization problem.

I give my word for this!! Nobody is Fooled on this one!

Besides that the brand is not so unknown. Besides Martin, great

players like Bart van Lier and the Slokar quartet play on these

    instruments.

  • @BenBasstrombone Incredible performance! Martin played this piece with remarkable clarity, fluidity, and consistency, and as a jazz bass bone player myself, this is the stuff I live for! I would love to find a copy of this chart to play with my big band at the University of North Florida. Are copies available, and how would I go about getting my hands on one? Thanks for posting this outstanding video Mr. van Dijk!

  • Ok people don't get fooled here: the poster of this video states: 'Sorry for the little synchronization problem between sound and video'

So, I'm absolutely sure this is either playback or/and repaired in a recording/editing studio. The sound though, is very good for an instrument from an unknown brand, bravo!! (although the Rath produces a richer sound)

@ Brassheavy: it seems that you know more 'bout Phil than than about music?

    Kind regards

  • @DrMichaelRath

    Unknown brand ?

Kühnl is pretty famous in europe, great trombones !

  • Sounds great!

  • so cool!

  • great playing - excellent chart....

  • Very nice chart. I like the way Pat Williams layered the string bass with the bass trombone. Very well played. Thanks for posting this. Shades of Nelson Riddle.

  • Very nice Martin, amazing sound and frasing!!!

  • Great playing, Beautiful sound (lekker Martin)

  • Comparing Phil and Martin is kind of silly. It's like comparing Sammy Sosa and Babe Ruth. On their best day, both could hit it way out of the park.

  • As Mr Patrick said it during the concert: the best basstrombone bigband player in the world! Great technique and style! Next thing is learning this trick from the master himself...

  • yes indeed! beautiful playing. and much better than the original recording, which was surprising, because PT is a MUCH better player than what came through on that.

  • @tombone27 like PT recording too. I believe Phil just sight read the thing.....Both are amazing players just don´t compare but enjoy. Martin´s live perfromance is great, good control, also the recording and editing is very very good for a live gig. But this is why the Metropole orchestra is maybe the no.1 recording orchestra in europe.

  • I'd be so happy if I could play just half as well as him. :(

  • wow effortless dbl peddle B at the end - awesome!!!

  • Martin is great !!!

  • Beautiful bass trombone sound! Please post more.

  • Yeah! Sounds really amazing Martin! Hope we meet again soon and play together sometime somewhere!

  • Great playing, Beautiful sound!!!! This is a great example of the bass trombone as a

    unique solo instrument!!!!

  • Great video!

  • amazing playing - amazing recording to...........

Martin is featured at the Dutch Bass Trombone Open 2010, talking about recording playing, studio work, frasing and more! I am happy finaly this video is out! long overdue.

  • Yeah.. very smokin' playing. I love his sound. <3 bass trombone too.
