After seeing a skateboard in a 'beach party' movie in the early 60's, I went home and carved a hunk of walnut and installed some crappy metal skate wheels. I was likely the first - and noisiest - skater in town.

So true that you don't need the ocean. You can be the lonely surfer anywhere!

Never got a statue, but was given a discount by the pharmacy for buying lots of gauze and ointment.
