it is known that venizelos never wanted to go to ankara. He was pressured by the big powers but he insisted to keep smyrna region and perhaps take constantinopole(which the big powers refused). 1) Smyrna fire was not set by the Turks. It happened because of the Greek resistance. 2) 200 thousand people were not killed. The population of Smyrna was 20 thousand. 3) The introduction was fine but the ending was based on ultranationalist Greek lies.

They might have converted to Catholicism but they would have kept their language. You have no idea what damage was done to Greece under the Ottomans. During the Byzantine Empire cities like Athens and Thessaloniki were very rich and cosmopolitan cities. Under the Ottomans Greece was turned into an economic backwater left to ruin.

Under Turkish rule those cities were RICHER; because we were ruling the eastern trade routes. It is not our fault that the Greek merchants had not used the other trade routes discovered by the Western Europeans.

During the Ottoman Years The Population of Athens was 75% SMALLER in the late 18th century than it was during Byzantine Times. that is simply a historical fact.

While the rest of Europe was evolving and industrializing, Greece was backwards with an illiterate and backwards population. Greece is still feeling the effects of the Ottoman Empire even today. Just go to Karaman and look at the Turkish words on their churches written in GREEK letters. I have been there. I have been all over Turkey. Istanbul, Bursa, Efes Kapadokia. The turkish speak Christians from Karaman are Christians who were cut off from the Empire after the Battle of manzikert and slowly adopted the Turkish language.

That DESPOTATE was disestablished in 1460. So it makes the time of Turkish sovereignty on those Greek islands at least 440 years; not less than 200 years as you mentioned before... And we took Crete from ITALIANS -and we had CHRISTIAN ORTHODOX Greeks in our army- in 1669. That makes at least 250 years of Turkish sovereignty.

That is why it was italian troops helping the Byzantines at the siege of 1453.
