  • There is a kind of world-weariness to this song... which makes sense, knowing of everything that came before.

  • ALL THE LYRICS DOWN :)

  • Day is ended, dim my eyes,

    But journey long before me lies.

    Farewell, friends! I hear the call.

    The ship's beside the stony wall.

    Foam is white and waves are grey;

    beyond the sunset leads my way.

    Foam is salt, the wind is free;

    I hear the rising of the sea

  • Farewell, friends! The sails are set,

    the wind is east, the moorings fret.

    Shadows long before me lie,

    beneath the ever-bending sky,

    but islands lie behind the Sun

    that i shall raise ere all is done;

    lands there are to west of West,

    where night is quiet and sleep is rest.

  • Guided by the Lonely Star,

    beyond the utmost harbour-bar,

    I'll find the heavens fair and free,

    and beaches of the Starlit Sea.

    Ship my ship! I seek the West,

    and fields and mountains ever blest.

    Farewell to Middle-earth at last.

    I see the star above my mast!

  • Another version by the composer Donald Swann is also posted on YouTube.

    Swann had set several travel-themed poems from LOTR and other Tolkien works in the song cycle,"THE ROAD GOES EVER ON", (Tolkien approved Swann's settings, which were published by Tolkien's publishers). After Tolkien's death, his secretary gave Swann a copy of this poem, and Swann included his setting in a later edition of the song cycle. Swann's setting is more of a triumphant testament than a dirge. Worth a listen.

  • @bunnycatch3r Why quote a lie from an archaic book of stolen lies on a page for a song about a book people can enjoy without guilt?

  • @bunnycatch3r I meant the entire bible, not only the book of john. I'm not convinced there was a john though, or a christ, or a paul. No real evidence just a rewritten story book of historical inaccuracies.

  • @bunnycatch3r If you'd like the insight of a bronze age slave misogynistic slave trader, and to be informed on how to properly beat your slaves, or "raise" your women, or abuse your children, then sure it's that.

  • @AMpufnstuf I apologize for the original comment. I had no intention of upsetting anyone. I just wanted to compare one work of fiction to another. All the best to you AMpufnstuf.

    Farewell freinds, I hear the call,

    the ship's beside the stony wall.

    Foam is white, and waves are grey

    beyond the sunset leads my way.

    Foam is salt; the wind is free.

    I hear the rising of the Sea.
