Damn there were many good finnish deathmetal bands it the early 90´s. Still not many of them has realeased anything or is still active after about 20 years. Amorphis stayed alive because it refreshened itself.

The fact that people are so upset about the type of music being played i find silly. Yes, bands evolve and try new things. Maybe they got bored of their old style, maybe they sold out, maybe they are trolling their fans, i dont know.

All i care is how their music feels between my ears, and this particular song feels good. Giving musical style a name makes it easier to find more music of that style. If the style it self becomes too important to you, i doubt you have musical taste. Just ego.

@Propaani It's not really about ego. People just fail to understand that people change over the years too. When Amorphis were 20 they hated the world and wanted to play death metal. When they are close to 40 they think differently. They want emphasis on the melody and I see no problem with that. But some people are just like "derp a 20 year old band should always stay the same and blast drop-D tuned riffage".

I listen from the 1st cd's of this band all the way up to now, I can hear at the start the beginnings of what they do now, I think they just evolve, even mature as musicians, The whole 20 years of musice is wonderful to listen to. I really don't understand this idea that if a band is popular, somehow they have "sold out" or "gone commecial" to this day Amporphis does what they want as they want and they are always themselves, it just took the world a while to "get it"

Don't get me wrong, they are one of my favourite bands. On the recent albums almost all the songs are in the same rhythm, the riffs are by the book, no dissonance, the package is fantastic etc, etc. Then there's 'Drowned Maid', for example :)

I'm sure that Amorphis are having their most successful period with Joutsen, their albums go gold, they tour the world and I'm really glad for them, they certainly earned it. One problem, songs like these don't touch me at all, they sound very generic. It doesn't have to have growls, cleans or something third, but it needs to get more interesting. As with many other bands (but not all), the commercial peak is usually the musical low-point. But I keep my fingers crossed :)

@MishaHendrix Amorphis have been commercial for a while now, at least since Tuonela, its just that they got more popular with their recent releases. I dont know if you've listened to this album that much but you should try other songs like Skyforger or From Earth I Rose, the music in the album is very interesting actually even though the songs have a very poppy song structure, they have a heavy prog influence and blend in some folk instruments very cleverly, and then theres Tomis amazing vocals.

@Lekiwi33 It's not a growl but it's not clean either, although he doesn't push it, it's something that people call "heat". Mostly done by Rock/Grunge singers, they act like they are going to do a growl by lowering their voice and screaming normally, what he does in this case is that he doesn't lower his voice to much and screams his heart out, or so I'm guessing.

It is speaking as a God. To forge is to make something from metal, but also means to make something which requires much power. So Thor could forge things with his hammer which can only be done by a God. Forging the heavens would be like creating Valhalla.

I think that this song is actually based in Ilmarinen's(or something like that XD) story

Ilmarines was the creator of heavens and he also made the sampo (it was like a kind of magic mill), and when the song talks about a "godly device" it's talking about the sampo.

Well that's what I think, but read the entire poem if you can get it because I couldn't find it anywhere :(
