i actually performed this in drama class, but it was a complete misfire compared to this. This Monologue will be a great treasure for Cinema History for a long time to come
Thursday morning chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, herbie robinson, from cleavland. Baseball player, bosoms mate. We thaught he was asleep, reached over to wake him up, he bobbed up and down in the water it was like a kinda top. Upended. Well he had been bitten in half below the waist! This was a real person that was actualy on the indianapolis and that realy happened. Check your history.
With Hollywood's incessant trend of resurrecting seemingly dead franchises with almost no discretion whatsoever, they might as well make a prequel to "Jaws" about Quint's ill-fated tale... with lots of CG sharks.
@Polarcupcheck The movie doesn't portray him as much of a role model, though. He's really a self-destructive egomaniac. He smashes the ship radio to prevent Brody from calling for help; he also pushes his damaged ship to the point where the motor breaks down, stranding himself and his crew. His determination to get the shark all by himself gets him killed in the end, and nearly gets Brody and Hooper killed as well. Not very heroic.
@lancslass43 But YOU said he was a good role model. I quote: "Quint was the grandfather a lot of people I see today needed. Someone to smack their ass into gear and make a man out of them."
Without EXCEPTION, one of the best scenes in film history!! Not only for the dialog, but Robert Shaw's personae in this scene is second to none, not to mention in the whole film & I cant imagine anyone one else playing this part better than him Pure Brilliance!!!!
quarryman 88....i hear ya ..good idea...where did ya come up with that one? GOOD FOR YOU. how can you do it with apocolypse now..when sheen first meets brando..the messenger boy..stuff..?? thank you..
Correct me if I am wrong, but at the end of the monologue he says June the 29th, 1945. I always thought that it was JULY 29th, 1945. I hope that I am correct........
I heard he was really drunk while doing this scene. Spielberg wasn't happy but when the crew were all mesmerised by him he decided to not do it again with Shaw sober.
I heard that there was some sort of secret mission dealing with the Indianapolis, saying that some sailors were told to be quiet about it. Anybody ever heard of a similar story?
@MrRichBiker I tried to upload the scene previously, and YouTube took it down within seconds, claiming copyright, etc... and someone told me if I reverse it, it's harder for them to find and take down.
@Huboons "coffee is for closers" is not a monologue though. Too many other people talk. That scene from GGR is a great scene, but these few minutes of Jaws still get my vote as best (most compelling, memorable, character-defining) monologue on film.
I met and did some work for a man that was a gunner on The INDIANAPOLIS. Gus Kay. He has since passed away. I'll never forget the stories he told me over the course of three days. Thanks for the post. RIP Gus.
Supposedly alot of this scene was improv and done on the spot by no other than the fucking man !!!

@bowser8375 Nope. Robert Shaw actually took the script and rewrote it very specifically.

They simply do not make movies like this anymore. Hollywood has gotten to caught up in CGI and forgotten all about the damn story.

It actually brought the story out, people kind of forgot about it. It happened right as the war was over. Or close to the end.
