The Senkaku Islands historically belong to Japan. China started claiming the sovereignty over the islands in 1970's when the abundant resources were found around the area. Before then, China accepted the islands as the Japanese territory even in the textbooks for Chinese children.

Thanks to Chinese because Japanese learnt the Chinese writing characters. The earliest Japanese writing record was in 750Ad or so, and it was written in Chinese characters. Japanese are still using Chinese characters up to today.

History of Asia would of turned out very different if Japan didn't take expansionist war policy before and during WWII. China might not have become communist and Korea would of been a one unified country. I spoke to many people (Vietnamese, Fillipinos, Koreans, Chinese etc.) who's grand parents still remember many atrocities committed by Japanese. Out side of Japan many Asians really don't have a lot of sympathy toward Japanese due to their lack of remorse--unlike the German's who have.

@tarafuku10 A large majority of Japanese hold rightwing views, most of them think that Japan was only "helping" Asia by invading and colonizing it, by bombing Pearl Harbor, and that Japanese soldiers were greeted with sweets and flowers. Even saying "Sorry" to Asia is like a big loss of face to Japan. This is a complete opposite from Germany, who erected Holocaust museums and teach their children about their Nazi ancestors.

Secondly, The Cairo Declaration (開羅宣言) on November 27, 1943 stated that the Allies resolved to bring unrelenting military pressure against Japan until it agrees to unconditional surrender.
All territories Japan has stolen from China, such as Manchuria(Dongbei), Formosa(Taiwan), and the Pescadores(Penghu), shall be restored to the Republic of China. Just like Japanese Government never admitted what they did in WWII for invading other countries and almost never say “Sorry”to the past victims.

The Senkaku Islands historically belong to Japan. China started claiming the sovereignty over the islands in 1970's when the abundant resources were found around the area. Before then, China accepted the islands as the Japanese territory even in the textbooks for Chinese children.
If anyone is interested in the claims from both the countries, google for “BBC News Q&A: China-Japan islands row", and make up your own mind by yourself.
