@kmk4life86 This is at Canada Olympic Park, 4 years ago judging from the Dual Slalom course if I remember correctly. Calgary AB Canada. The hill has changed substantially since this video and has moved to more high-speed berms and jumps rather than technical skinnies etc.

Yeah - probably 18, thats 9 on the back and 2 on the front. They dont have the usual 3 on the front as that space is occupied by a guard to allow the rider to slide over logs/rocks.

It's called a chainguide and it prevents you from losing your chain off you chainrings (the gears on the front )when you you go over rough terrain at speed or go over jumps. Generally these are a single speed set up so most downhill, freeride, and park bikes only have 8 or 9 gears, but they do make dual ring chainguides. The bashguard you speak of isn't usually run without the guide but you can do it.
