I met a veteran of the Kwajalein battle. He saw me wearing a "Dive Kwajalein" T-shirt in the mall. We had a long talk. He told me the Japanese soldiers refused to come out of their positions to surrender, so they bull dozed their exists and left them there. I've been to Roi-Namur and you can see the tremendous holes in the concrete bunkers from the shelling. On Kwajalein, you can visit the Japanese and American war memorials. I dove on a Japanese wreck off of Kwaj too. Interesting. Good post.

@losetheweightnow I worked on Kwaj from 90 to 94. When were you there ? I also dove the Prince Eugen and was lucky enough to dive Bikini Lagoon before it was open to sports diving.My buddies and I stood on the deck of the Saratoga.What a history those islands have.

@losetheweightnow I've been to Roi many times. The Altair is the biggest dish I've ever seen.When they turn it on....no one is allowed to do any work over 20 ft. in the air. The lights in the Power Plant always went nuts. I watched my friend tape a flouorecent light onto a broom handle.....climb a ladder....hold up the light...and it lit up because of the dishes power.

Most color footage you see of WW2 is, indeed, colorized black and white footage, but there is actually some that was originally filmed in color.

@freak1940 You were correct the first time...it was Sept 2 1945. The surrender was officially tended on Aug. 15, but the actual signing of the end of hostilities was Sept 2 on the Missouri. Remember that fighting still took place on limited scales for days afterward in Europe (Germany) and for months after the Japanese surrender.
