I was told by the dealer that the system automatically carries out calibration every 3000 Kms when the car is at idle and will do so for the life of the car.The noise changes is apparantly the common rail pressures stepping up to higher pressures and the computer monitors the changes in injection etc to accomodate for engine and fuel injection system wear and tear and maintain a common pressure for the life of the car.
Nope, it has to be at idle. As I understand, the injectors have to be re-calibrated during their lifetime to perform optimally. Exactly what's going on during calibration is beyond me.
Good to know, I have a 1990 Legacy Wagon thats still running here in the States. My compressor flicks on and off all the time. I'd say its the clutch on the AC, because its not a smooth transition at all. I'm not sure if its electrical or mechanical, which reminds me that I need to check all the wiring on the Sub Fan because the fuse has been blown for ever. I'm waiting to replace my Legacy, I'm hoping for a Forester with the Turbo Boxer Diesel, and an upgraded transmission.
sound of diesel look's like a tractor

Mine does this, on and off, all the while. Ruins an otherwise smooth tickover.

Oh right, can it not do adaption/calibration instantly during normal running? Whats it calibrating injection timing and duration?
